Whats is Gender Sensitivity?
● Process by which people are
made aware of how gender
plays a role in life through their
treatment of others.
● Act of being sensitive to the
way people think
Difference in Sex and Gender
Sex
● Sex is the biological and
physical characteristics that
define men and women.
Gender
● Gender refers to the socially
constructed role, behaviours,
activities and attributes that a
given society considers which
appropriate for men and
women.
Sex and Gender
Sex
● Sex is permanent and
Universal.
Eg: Male and Female.
Gender
● Gender varies from one
society to another.
Eg: Masculine and
Feminine.
GENDER ROLES
● Set of social and behavioral norms that are generally
considered appropriate for either a man or woman in a
social or interpersonal relationship.
● Masculine or feminine .
STEREOTYPES
● Generalizations and assumptions that people make about
the characteristics of all members of a group based on an
image.
● Eg: As a child ,boys gets trucks ,guns and superheroes
and girls gets dolls and cooking sets.
GENDER DISCRIMINATION
● Relationship between masculinity and gender based
violence
● Disempowerment and impoverishment of women and
persistence of gender inequalities through men’s
violence.
● Loss of men’s dignity and self esteem when they are
taught to behave violently.
GENDER EQUALITY
● Refers to the equal access to rights, responsibilities and
opportunities by focusing on the individual’s capabilities
instead of their gender.
GENDER SENSITIZATION
● It is the teaching of gender sensitivity and
encouragement of behaviour modification through
raising awareness of gender equality concerns
BENEFITS OF GENDER SENSITIZATION
● It makes people understand the difference between sex
and gender.
● Reconstructing of gender roles based on efficacy and can
help realize higher productivity of men and women in
household and outside work.
● Helps to determine which assumptions in matter of
gender are valid and which are stereotyped.
HOW TO ACHIEVE GENDER
EQUALITY?
● Talk about it.
● Share the care work.
● Embrace diverse role models .
● Empower others to speak out.
● Fight stereotypes including your own.
● Listen and learn from them.
● Remove gender pay gap.
● Use skill based assessments.
● Make work balance life a priority.
