DETROIT — Strong profits
on new cars and trucks helped
General Motors Co. earn $2 bil-
lion in the third quarter,
enhancing the company's
appeal as it nears next week’s
initial public stock offering.
The third-quarter earnings
of $1.20 per share nearly match
what GM made in the first two
quarters of the year combined,
aided by profits from overseas
and healthy revenue from
North America, the company
said Wednesday. Earnings were
boosted by higher prices from
new models such as the Buick
LaCrosse.
“I think the results of the
third quarter clearly point to
the amount of progress that
GM has made,” GM CEO Dan
Akerson said in a conference
call with analysts and media.
He said GM is on track to make
2010 its first profitable year
since 2004.
The results were another
indication of a widespread
recovery among global
automakers. Toyota, Honda,
Nissan, Chrysler and Ford all
reported improved results in
the most recent quarter as auto
sales slowly rise.
The strong quarter meant
that GM met projections it
made a week ago that net
income for the quarter would
be $1.9 billion to $2.1 billion.
It was the third-straight prof-
itable quarter for GM, which
needed $50 billion in U.S. gov-
ernment aid to make it through
bankruptcy protection last
year.
The company has repaid or
plans to repay taxpayers $9.5
billion, and the government
hopes to get back the remain-
ing $40 billion with the Nov. 18
common stock offering and
several follow-up sales.
Also Wednesday, a person
briefed on the matter said that
Swiss bank UBS is no longer
working on the IPO because
one of its employees leaked
information about it in an
unauthorized e-mail.
The latest results reversed a
$908 million loss, or 73 cents
per share.

NEW YORK — With an eye
toward appealing to foodies,
Wendy’s is remaking its fries
with Russett potatoes, leaving
the skin on and sprinkling sea
salt on top.
Thefast-foodchainhasbeen
changing its menu to focus on
“real” ingredients to win more
fans.
The first move in the strategy
wasanewlineofsaladssuchas
Apple Pecan Chicken in the
summer. Now, the fries, which
first appear today and roll out
over the next two weeks.This is
the first major overhaul of the
41-year-old company’s fries,
although it has adjusted the
recipe in the past.
The new fries are slightly
slimmer than the old ones, and
crispier because they’re
smaller.
They will have more salt — a
medium-sized fry goes from
350 milligrams to 500 mil-
ligrams — and calories — add
10 to 420. The selling price will
not change, ranging from 99
cents to about $2. The fries will
still come to stores frozen.
Wendy’s is planning a mar-
keting push, including national
television ads airing later this
month, to highlight the
changes.
“Wewanteveryingredientto
be a simple ingredient, to be
one you can pronounce and
one your grandmother would
recognize in her pantry,” said
Chief Marketing Officer Ken
Calwell, who declined to say
what the Dublin, Ohio, com-
pany was spending on the
effort.
People want more natural
foods and they want to know
where they come from, he said.
Having the skin on is a way to
remind people that fries come
from potatoes, he said.
Testing showed that some
people think restaurant french
fries are processed foods, he
said.
The old recipe used a blend
of potatoes, not always Russett,
but the fries were 100 percent
potato.

PARIS — It could be the
French version of “A Boy
Named Sue” — a car named
Zoe.
A judge ruled Wednesday
that automaker Renault can
call its new electric car Zoe,
much to the chagrin of some
French women and girls with
that first name.
Parents of two children
named Zoe Renault had argued
in court that their children
could end up enduring a life-
time of teasing and annoyance
— just like the fictional youth
named Sue in the famous
Johnny Cash song.
The families, who are not
related to the car company,
wanted Renault to choose
another name for the model.
“There’s a line between liv-
ing things and inanimate
objects, and that line is
defined by the first name,”
lawyer David Koubbi said.
“We're telling Renault one
very simple thing: First names
are for humans.”
But a judge found against
Koubbi’s clients in a fast-track
proceeding, ruling that the
parents would only have a case
it they could prove that naming
the car “Zoe” would cause the
children “certain, direct and
current harm.”
Koubbi said he would
appeal. He insisted that while
it’s clear the Zoe Renaults of
the world would be most
affected by the release of the
car — slated for 2012 — all of
France’s estimated 35,000 Zoes
would feel the sting.
“Can you imagine what little
Zoes would have to endure on
the playground, and even
worse, when they get a little bit
older and someone comes up
to them in a bar and says, ‘Can
I see your airbags?’ or ‘Can I
shine your bumper?’ ” Koubbi
said.
The lawyer said Renault
named it the Zoe ZE because of
the electric-powered auto’s
zero emissions.
Koubbi who has represented
French celebrity clients, took
the case on a pro bono basis.
Why? Because his step-
daughter’s name is Zoe.

ELYRIA – Helping customers
solve their heating, air condi-
tioning and plumbing needs for
75 years, Geisel Mechanical Ser-
vices knows what it is talking
about when it comes to energy
efficiency.
It is the go-to source for those
looking to reduce their water
usage, save money on their elec-
tric bill or cool their home for
less. But recently, the local busi-
ness decided to turn the tables
on itself.
President Andy Culberson
said the company had an energy
audit conducted on every room,
toilet and light fixture and
learned that it could do a lot
more to make the Broad Street
facility more efficient.
That was three years ago.
Today, Geisel is being com-
mended for those efforts by the
Council of Smaller Enterprises,
which put a challenge out to
area small businesses to see
what kind of energy efficiency
changes they could make in
their own businesses. Under
terms of the challenge, busi-
nesses were encouraged to sub-
mit details of energy-efficient
projects they’ve implemented
overthelastyear.Allentrieswere
judged by a panel of energy effi-
cient experts.
Geisel’s was judged against
COSE members from Ashtabula,
Cuyahoga,Geauga,Lake,Lorain,
Medina, Portage and Summit
counties. It won in the goods
and services category and
received a $2,500 cash prize.
COSE representatives pre-
sented Geisel with a check
Wednesday morning.
“Being energy efficient in your
business is becoming more and
more of a priority for small busi-
nesses and these winners exem-
plify forward thinkers that are
ahead of the curve in this area,”
said Steve Millard, president and
executive director of COSE.
Geisel upgraded its lighting,
HVAC systems, air compressors,
motors and roofing. It also cut
electric consumption by 30 per-
cent and its natural gas usage by
45 percent.
“Itfeelsgoodtogetrecognized
for doing something we have
been preaching for 40 years,”
Culberson said. “It’s always a lot
more credible when you have
actually done the same things
you have recommended your
customers should do. It adds
creditability to our mission.”
All of the improvements were
not done at one time. Culberson
said replacements were done in
a systematic approach, with him
identifying the energy hogs in
the building, fixing them and
then working backward.

NEW YORK — It used to be
that every time a bank sold a
mortgage, the county land
recording office received a fee. It
wasn’t much — $30 or so — but
then real estate boomed in the
1990s and banks pooled mil-
lions of mortgages into securi-
ties. One mortgage transaction
became a dozen or more, and
thetabgrew larger.Sothebanks
came up with a way around the
fees. And now they are fighting
to avoid tens of billions of dol-
lars in penalties.
In 1997, when the banks’ bur-
geoning business in mortgage
securities was clashing with the
unwieldy nature of written
forms, the industry created its
own alternative. The banks
formed a private company
called Mortgage Electronic Reg-
istry Systems Inc., or MERS. It
has registered more than 65 mil-
lion loans. MERS’ owners are all
the big mortgage companies.
They are all facing a foreclosure-
fraud investigation launched by
all 50 state attorneys general.
Now, three years after the
housing crash and two months
after allegations that some
banks submitted fraudulent
documents to foreclosure
courts, every aspect of the
nation's mortgage machine is
under scrutiny.
