Gears
1. Gears component in bicycle
1. Purpose of gear in bicycle
Gear helps you to ride faster and further with less effort. Gears help you to smooth ride to
uphill, terrain or any surface. Low gear helps you to pedal easily where as higher gear is hard
to pedal.

2.1Chain Rings
Front sprockets are connected to the crank arm are known as chain rings. Generally there are
three chain rings. These triple cranks provide 3 ranges of speeds you can use depending on
the kind of riding you're doing. The inner, smaller one is for slower speeds and hill climbing.
The middle one is for medium speeds on flat roads or small hills. The outer, larger one is for
higher speeds on flat roads. For most riding you will probably be using the middle chain ring.
2. 2.2 Freewheel or cassette
The gear cluster on the rear wheel is either a freewheel or a cassette. If your bicycle has seven
or less than seven gears on the back, it probably has a freewheel. If your bike has eight to ten
gears on the back, it has a cassette. Each ring on the cassette is referred to as a cog.
2.3 Front and Rear derailleur
Derailleur is a mechanism that derails the chain moving it to another cog or chain ring. There
are rear and front derailleur. The rear shifts the chain across the cogs. The front moves the
chain between the chain rings.
2.4 Derailleur pulleys
The small toothed wheels on the rear derailleur that carry the chain. The top one is called the
"jockey pulley." It's responsible for moving the chain during shifting. The bottom pulley is
called the "tension pulley." It creates tension on the chain to keep it taut during shifting.
2.5 Shifter
Shifters are fitted on handlebars. Shifter on the left side of your handlebar is for the front
derailleur or gear. This shifter moves the 'cage' surrounding the chain back and forth
between the 3 sprockets on your crank which puts the chain on the sprocket you desire.
Shifter on the right side of your handle bar is for the rear derailleur. This shifter moves the
chain back and forth between the sprockets or cog on the freewheel on your rear wheel.
