Since then over 200 students have participated. Barb Weidman was a campus staff at the time and grew concerned that the discipleship of students done only on campus was too narrow and didn't really allow for the challenge and experience of a full-orbed Gospel. She began the program without the knowledge that anyone else in the country was doing this kind of thing. Later that year, IV convened it's first Urban Project Consultation in Portland and staff from around the country who began programs out of their own convictions "found each other."
Gateway began with a focused goal of helping students to intern at ministries and organizations where they could use their specific education in serving the poor. Early ministry partners were Esperanza Health Center (a partner for all 18 years), Cardone Industries (engineering), and Philadelphia Enterprise Center (small business incubator), Over the years we've had to work through the tension of whether to continue with the vocational focus or plant ourselves in one neighborhood where we could live, work and worship. To keep with the vocational focus prevented us from living and working in one neighborhood and over the years we've felt that it was more important to invest in one place. Our partnership with Spirit and Truth Church has continued to grow over the years and has enabled us to develop probably the best combination of healthy church connection, housing, and varied internships in the same neighborhood.

From the beginning, the Biblical principles of Shalom have been the foundation of teaching. Along with tackling multiple areas of justice, we've also given a lot of attention to spiritual formation believing that without these ongoing spiritual underpinings (especially Sabbath rest and reflection), no one can give themselves to this work over the long haul.
