Gangsta rap originated as a subgenre of hip hop that evolved from hardcore hip hop and reflected the experiences of inner-city youth involved in crime and violence. In the late 1980s, gangsta rap became commercially successful. Some gangsta rappers had actual or alleged ties to gangs like the Bloods and Crips. The 1986 song "6 in the Mornin'" by Ice-T is often credited as the first gangsta rap song.
