Where is

today’s
Gandhi?
“I am not a

servant of India.
I am a servant of
Truth.”
A stage comes in a person’s life when there is no need to express his thoughts,
and even less so through external actions. Thought alone suffices. It holds
such a strength. In such a state, we can say that even without external action,
service is being offered. My cultivation is geared in a similar direction.

However, while practicing non-violence has inspired me to let go of all
activities one by one, my soul refuses to accept any state of bliss till there is

even one injustice or sorrow in this world. My spirit tugs me in one direction
while my body pulls me in an opposite direction. There is a way out of this tug
of war -- but that stage is achieved very slowly through extremely rigorous
cultivation and facing many challenges.
I will have to reach this freedom,
not by refusing to engage in the
world, but by performing my
actions with the spirit of
selflessness. The secret of this

revolution has always been to
use external service as a
continuous ceremony to purify
and still the mind.

“Benefit All”

“We all have, we must
share what we have, and
we do it to be zero.”
“Whether mankind will consciously follow the Law of Love, I do
not know. But that need not perturb us. The Law will work, just
as the Law of Gravitation will work, whether we accept it or not.

And just as a scientist will work wonders out of various
applications of the Laws of Nature, even so a man who applies
the Law of Love with scientific precision can work greater
wonders. For, the force of Non-violence is infinitely more
wonderful and subtle than the forces of Nature, like, for
instance, electricity."

“Soul Force”

“Ahimsa is not just the
absence of violence. It is
the presence of love and

compassion.”
‘In one village a notoriously fierce communal agitator came up to Gandhi in
front of hundreds of paralyzed onlookers, put his hands around Gandhi's
slender throat, and began choking the life out of him. Such is the height to
which Gandhi had grown that there was not even a flicker of hostility in his
eyes, not a word of protest. He yielded himself completely to the flood of love
within him, and the man broke down like a little child and fell sobbing at his

feet. For those who watched, it seemed a miracle. For Gandhi, who had got
used to the "miracles" of love, it only proved for the hundredth time in his own
life the depth of the words … "Hatred does not cease by hatred at any time;
hatred ceases by love. This is an unalterable law." ’
– Eknath Easwaran, Gandhi the Man

Swaraj

“Government of

“Self Rule”

each by each”
“If India adopted the doctrine of love as an
active part of her religion and introduced it

in her politics, Swaraj would descend upon
India from heaven. If it did, India would

establish Swaraj in a day. But I am painfully
aware that that event is far off as yet."

“Local First”

“Minimize distance
between producer
and consumer”
"It was not that we did not know how to invent machinery, but our
forefathers knew that, if we set our hearts after such things, we would
become slaves and lose our moral fiber. They further reasoned that large
cities were a snare and a useless encumbrance and that people would not
be happy in them, that there would be gangs of thieves and robbers,
prostitution and vice flourishing in them and that poor men would be
robbed by rich men. They were, therefore, satisfied with small villages.
They saw that kings and their swords were inferior to the sword of ethics,
and they, therefore, held the sovereigns of the earth to be inferior to the
Rishis and the Fakirs.” --Gandhi

 Two billion are in extreme

poverty.
 Rich-poor divide is highest

ever.
 Nature is being pillaged like

never before.
 Mass urbanization is

destroying village life.
 Economic growth is

unsustainable.
 Science is used for mass

destruction.
When the Zen Monastery in
Tassajara almost burned away

due to a wildfire, five
community members stayed
to save it: not by fighting the

fire, but by preparing to meet
it. And they discovered that
some seeds only germinate in

fire.
What seeds are sprouted by

our unwavering commitment
to inner transformation?
What is today’s
charkha?

“Safest course is to believe

in the moral government of
the world and therefore in

the supremacy of the moral
law, the law of truth and
love.”
Where is

today’s
Gandhi?
"If I had an hour to solve a
problem and my life
depended on the solution, I
would spend the first 55
minutes determining
the proper question to ask,
for once I know the proper
question, I could solve the
problem in less than five
minutes." --Einstein

Vinoba on Leadership
“To progress, society doesn't need
'leaders' anymore. This doesn't
mean that we won't have great
men amidst us. I think great men
will come and they will be vital for
progress of humanity, but they will
be so great that they will refuse to
take up this position of leadership.”

Gandhi 3.0, Moved by Love Retreat

  • 1.

  • 7. A stage comes in a person’s life when there is no need to express his thoughts, and even less so through external actions. Thought alone suffices. It holds such a strength. In such a state, we can say that even without external action, service is being offered. My cultivation is geared in a similar direction. However, while practicing non-violence has inspired me to let go of all activities one by one, my soul refuses to accept any state of bliss till there is even one injustice or sorrow in this world. My spirit tugs me in one direction while my body pulls me in an opposite direction. There is a way out of this tug of war -- but that stage is achieved very slowly through extremely rigorous cultivation and facing many challenges.
  • 8. I will have to reach this freedom, not by refusing to engage in the world, but by performing my actions with the spirit of selflessness. The secret of this revolution has always been to use external service as a continuous ceremony to purify and still the mind.
  • 10. Nirmala Deshpande Sarvodaya “Benefit All” “We all have, we must share what we have, and we do it to be zero.”
  • 11. “Whether mankind will consciously follow the Law of Love, I do not know. But that need not perturb us. The Law will work, just as the Law of Gravitation will work, whether we accept it or not. And just as a scientist will work wonders out of various applications of the Laws of Nature, even so a man who applies the Law of Love with scientific precision can work greater wonders. For, the force of Non-violence is infinitely more wonderful and subtle than the forces of Nature, like, for instance, electricity." --Gandhi
  • 12. Usha Tai Satyagraha “Soul Force” “Ahimsa is not just the absence of violence. It is the presence of love and compassion.”
  • 13. ‘In one village a notoriously fierce communal agitator came up to Gandhi in front of hundreds of paralyzed onlookers, put his hands around Gandhi's slender throat, and began choking the life out of him. Such is the height to which Gandhi had grown that there was not even a flicker of hostility in his eyes, not a word of protest. He yielded himself completely to the flood of love within him, and the man broke down like a little child and fell sobbing at his feet. For those who watched, it seemed a miracle. For Gandhi, who had got used to the "miracles" of love, it only proved for the hundredth time in his own life the depth of the words … "Hatred does not cease by hatred at any time; hatred ceases by love. This is an unalterable law." ’ – Eknath Easwaran, Gandhi the Man
  • 15. “If India adopted the doctrine of love as an active part of her religion and introduced it in her politics, Swaraj would descend upon India from heaven. If it did, India would establish Swaraj in a day. But I am painfully aware that that event is far off as yet." Gandhi
  • 17. "It was not that we did not know how to invent machinery, but our forefathers knew that, if we set our hearts after such things, we would become slaves and lose our moral fiber. They further reasoned that large cities were a snare and a useless encumbrance and that people would not be happy in them, that there would be gangs of thieves and robbers, prostitution and vice flourishing in them and that poor men would be robbed by rich men. They were, therefore, satisfied with small villages. They saw that kings and their swords were inferior to the sword of ethics, and they, therefore, held the sovereigns of the earth to be inferior to the Rishis and the Fakirs.” --Gandhi

  • 21.  Two billion are in extreme poverty.  Rich-poor divide is highest ever.  Nature is being pillaged like never before.  Mass urbanization is destroying village life.  Economic growth is unsustainable.  Science is used for mass destruction.
  • 22. When the Zen Monastery in Tassajara almost burned away due to a wildfire, five community members stayed to save it: not by fighting the fire, but by preparing to meet it. And they discovered that some seeds only germinate in fire.
  • 23. What seeds are sprouted by our unwavering commitment to inner transformation?
  • 25. 11AM Moment of Silence
  • 26. 11AM Moment of Silence “Safest course is to believe in the moral government of the world and therefore in the supremacy of the moral law, the law of truth and love.”
  • 28. "If I had an hour to solve a problem and my life depended on the solution, I would spend the first 55 minutes determining the proper question to ask, for once I know the proper question, I could solve the problem in less than five minutes." --Einstein

I think great men will come and they will be vital for progress of humanity, but they will be so great that they will refuse to take up this position of leadership.”

  1. Dandi March (Tagore), Fasting, Swami Rama, Mandela, Dalai Lama.
  2. We all have; we must share. Sharing economy stats. Collaborative consumption is not Gandhian.
  3. Gandhiji went from city to city, village to village collecting funds for the Charkha Sangh. During one of his tours he addressed a meeting in Orissa. After his speech a poor old woman got up. She was bent with age, her hair was grey and her clothes were in tatters. The volunteers tried to stop her, but she fought her way to the place where Gandhiji was sitting.I must see him,” she insisted and going up to Gandhiji touched his feet. Then from the folds of her sari she brought out a copper coin and placed it at his feet. Gandhiji picked up the copper coin and put it away carefully. The Charkha Sangh funds were under the charge of Jamnalal Bajaj. He asked Gandhiji for the coin but Gandhiji refused.I keep cheques worth thousands of rupees for the Charkha Sangh,” Jamnalal Bajaj said laughingly, “yet you won’t trust me with a copper coin. This copper coin is worth much more than those thousands,” Gandhiji said. “If a man has several lakhs and he gives away a thousand or two, it doesn’t mean much. But this coin was perhaps all that the poor woman possessed. She gave me all she had. That was very generous of her. What a great sacrifice she made. That is why I value this copper coin more than a crore of rupees.
