Dr. Georgios Paltoglou is a senior lecturer in computer science whose main research areas are sentiment analysis, information retrieval, and machine learning. I pulled this brief overview together for a client unfamiliar with design research and user-centered design principles.
parallel Merging
The document describes algorithms for merging two sorted sequences in parallel. It discusses merging algorithms for the CREW and EREW models of parallel computation. An adaptation of Text2Onto for supporting the French language
The ontologies are progressively imposing themselves in the field of knowledge management. While the manual construction of an ontology is by far the most reliable, this task has proved to be too tedious and expensive. To assist humans in the process of building an ontology, several tools have emerged proposing the automatic or semi-automatic construction of ontologies. In this context, Text2Onto has become one of the most recognized ontology learning tools. The performance of this tool is confirmed by several research works. However, the development of this tool is based on Princeton WordNet (PWN) for English. As a result, it is limited to the processing of textual resources written in English. In this paper, we present our approach based on JWOLF, a Java API to access the free WordNet for French that we have developed to adapt this tool for the construction of ontologies from corpus in French. To evaluate the usefulness of our approach, we assessed the performance of the improved version of Text2Onto on a simplistic corpus of French language documents. The results of this experiment have shown that the improved version of Text2Onto according to our approach is effective for the construction of an ontology from textual documents in the French language.
Intelligent Tutoring - I-TUTOR explained
The project aims at developing an intelligent tutoring system, to be applied in open source learning environments, able to monitor, track, analyze and give formative assessment and feedback loop to students within the learning environment, and give inputs to tutors and teachers involved in distance learning to better their role during the process of learning. The software will be developed in java thus could be easily implemented and re-used in most of the common free platforms for eLearning.

Altmetrics are increasingly gaining support and interest as an alternative way of disseminating and measuring scholarly output. Championed by early career researchers, librarians and information professionals, Altmetrics are to research as MOOCs are to learning. Like MOOCs most still do not understand their potential or how they could fit with or replace existing modes of delivery and assessment.
The first half of the workshop will help delegates gain an understanding of what Altmetrics are and how they can fit within academic library services. The second half of the session will deliver case studies, tools and techniques to help LIS professionals encourage better usage of Altmetrics.

Software systems are becoming ever more intelligent and more useful, but the way we interact with these machines too often reveals that they don’t actually understand people. Knowledge Representation and Semantic Web focus on the scientific challenges involved in providing human knowledge in machine-readable form. However, we observe that various types of human knowledge cannot yet be captured by machines, especially when dealing with wide ranges of real-world tasks and contexts. The key scientific challenge is to provide an approach to capturing human knowledge in a way that is scalable and adequate to real-world needs. Human Computation has begun to scientifically study how human intelligence at scale can be used to methodologically improve machine-based knowledge and data management. My research is focusing on understanding human computation for improving how machine-based systems can acquire, capture and harness human knowledge and thus become even more intelligent. In this talk I will show how the CrowdTruth framework (http://crowdtruth.org) facilitates data collection, processing and analytics of human computation knowledge.

GeoCities is a web hosting service which employs the concept/metaphors of “cities” and “neighbourhood” in real-world. For example, computer-related sites are placed in “SiliconValley” and entertainment sites in “Hollywood”. GeoCities was the third-most visited website at its peak when it was acquired by Yahoo! in 1999.
10 years later as social media had taken over and become mainstream on the Internet, GeoCities was shutdown and
deleted. However, the Internet Archive team made a backup of the site just before it was shut down to preserve the effort put in by around 35 million people since it started. The resulting 650GB archive was published online as a remembrance of the glorious days of GeoCities.
Will current social media (i.e., Facebook) eventually face the same fate? Justify your arguments with robust supporting evidence.

Wi-Fi is a popular networking technology that allows electronic devices to connect to the Internet wirelessly using radio frequency. However in recent years, researchers have found a way to utilise visible light from light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to transmit data: such technology is called Li-Fi (light fidelity).
Even though Li-Fi is still at its infancy, many universities and researchers are actively studying to reach its potential.

Annual Report

What is HEI-UP?

GeoCities is a web hosting service which employs the concept/metaphors of “cities” and “neighbourhood” in real-world. For example, computer-related sites are placed in “SiliconValley” and entertainment sites in “Hollywood”. GeoCities was the third-most visited website at its peak when it was acquired by Yahoo! in 1999.
10 years later as social media had taken over and become mainstream on the Internet, GeoCities was shutdown and
deleted. However, the Internet Archive team made a backup of the site just before it was shut down to preserve the effort put in by around 35 million people since it started. The resulting 650GB archive was published online as a remembrance of the glorious days of GeoCities.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.
