This workshop will analogize excerpts from the ABC Show “the Good Doctor” with future thinking of new learning ecosystems using inclusive design principles.
2. My work
As a Learning Designer, I have a whole toolkit of instructional
strategies, theories, and technologies to develop deeper
learning experiences for you and our learners. I help faculty,
instructors, and administrators see themselves as designers
of educational environments.

4. Our Session
● Give Context (thoughts and stories)
○ Good Design
○ Creating
○ Inclusive Design
● Review Clips (The Good Doctor ABC show)
● Collective Work - What makes us good people
4
5. Setting the Stage
● Appreciative Inquiry - questions questions questions
● Avoid Assumptions; Ask Questions
● Share Time and Space
● Honor Confidences
● Speak from personal experience
● Discuss constraints in our thinking
● Express challenges as well as support, BUT do so WITHOUT
BLAME OR SHAME.
● Think Creatively

6. Why Good Design isn’t good enough?
The truth is that “good design” considers the best
form and function for some people, but excludes
many people on the basis of ability — and
individuals with disabilities are often left out.
6
7. If people are discriminated against on the basis of
ability and denied opportunities for equal
participation? Is this good design?
Who wants to change this?

8. Story
The founder of eone .Hyungsoo Kim and his friend are both sitting on the steps smiling. Kim’s friend, who
is blind is sitting with his dog. The dog is smiling.

9. Eone was founded to solve a problem.
It started with a friendship

11. What is Inclusive Design?
The Bradley Mesh Rose Gold rests on a page of text that reads, "What is inclusive design?" The watch
covers the rest of the text and is illuminated by natural light.
11
12. Inclusive design aims to evolve our
civilization (education, products, services,
and structures) beyond their conventional
definitions, changing our standards for them.

thinking we used when we created them.”
- Albert Einstein

The Creativity Myth
Often thought of as breaking
rules, it’s the exact opposite.
It creates new rules and
associations.
15
16. People who are creative
don’t just solve problems,
they invent new problems
nobody’s ever thought
about before.
Find new challenges.

18. What is creating?
Creating is the invention recognition or reformulations of a problem or challenge in
a new way that makes it amenable to resolution in more effective ways.
Problem and challenge raising.

19. What creating is not
● Creating is not a personality trait
● Creating is not what “Creativity tests” measure
● Creating is not something that even the most creative
people display in all aspects of their lives or at all times
● Creating is not what artists do
● Creating is not always good or beneficial

22. Four Levels of CHANGE
➔ PERSONAL
◆ Values, beliefs, attitudes
➔ INTERPERSONAL
◆ actions, behavior, language
➔ INSTITUTIONAL
◆ rules, policies, procedures
➔ CULTURAL
◆ beauty, truth, right, normal
Accessibility is an
institutional
problem.

24. We need to consider what
our design values say about
what else we value. Do we
value equal opportunities for
people with disabilities? If
so, it needs to be reflected
in our design principles. And
not secondary thought...

32. Inclusive Centered Design
Being intentional
about/with:
• The “Learner/User(s)”
• The “Educators/Designer(s)”
• The “Community”
• Their Relationships
• The Design
• The Impact of the Design
For greater equity

33. What’s the difference Between Inclusive Design and
Accessibility?
While inclusive design considers from the very beginning how
something might be easily useful and enjoyable for as many
individuals as possible, accessibility traditionally means
making special considerations for people with disabilities.
33
34. Assistive devices aim to remove a barrier
for people with disabilities. Inclusive
design strives to fundamentally redesign
a living so that the barrier does not exist
in the first place.
34
36. Inclusive centered design (equity centered design) needs
allies who promote social justice, equality, and inclusion for
people with disabilities through transformative design.
Because we build our world and everything in it, inclusive
centered design has a unique opportunity to literally change
the world.
Where are the allies at?
36
37. “History will have to record that the greatest tragedy
of this period of social transition was not the strident
clamor of the bad people, but the appalling silence of
the good people.”
- Martin Luther King
37
40. “A single act of kindness throws out roots in all
directions, and the roots spring up and make new
trees. The greatest work that kindness does to
others is that it makes them kind themselves.”
- Amelia Earhart

42. “A person who is nice to you, but
rude to the waiter, is not a nice
person.”
- Dave Barry

43. Are we Good People?
So what does it mean to be an ally of inclusive design?
● If you’re a designer, adopt inclusive centered design principles.
● Businesses have the opportunity to become brand leaders by
providing inclusive products and services through in-house design
teams and carrying inclusive products.
● Consumers, we can all embrace, promote, and demand inclusive
products. We have the opportunity to vote with our dollars and reward
these efforts with our purchases. If we demand it, they will supply.
● Wouldn’t this make us good people?
