Editor's Notes
Demographic changes such as increasing population size and age, the emergence of chronic deseases, the increasing demand for medical services and healthcare staff shortages… have a very significant impact on healthcare systems as it increases the pressure in health expenditure
In the social field we’re seeing an increasing demand for knowledge and access to health information by citizens which has created a need for new telematic services to give answer to the increased expectations of the population. The expectation of immediacy in the provision of all kinds of services makes necessary the development of new technologies (wireless) to promote patients autonomy and improve professionals’ time management.
In the technological field there is an increasing use of telematic tools by the citizens, new applications that enable personalized treatments to patients, etc. and we’re seeing the emergence of smart devices which provide greater control of the patient’s health and the development of information systems provides new opportunities for telemedicine and remote care.
The principal challenges the international community is facing are the following:Increasing demand for health services : Population AgeingDisease ChronicityIncreasing demand from citizens on:Service QualityInformation available on real timeIncreasing mobility of the Agents Manage large amount of clinical information to access it in a safe and instantaneous wayTo face those major challenges, here are some strategic lines of action which have been identified:Empowerment ofpatients’ autonomy and specialized remote careImproving through ICT, accessibility, quality, safety and effectiveness of health carePromoting the use of new technologies to monitor patients in real–time
To reach those objectives, healthcare has to make a step forward the concept of iHealth. Indeed nowadays, the state of the art in healthcare, in the era of eHealth, offers us the possibility to use ICT in our daily practice through the use of internet, by the creation of static telemedicine platforms, the appearance of Electronic Health Record and the development of electronic prescription but we wanna go further than that. What we want is individualized healthcare, that the patient get involved in his own health and that they feel responsible for it, that healtcare systems adapt their systems on citizen needs and that we can all have immediate access to information and services wherever we are and whenever we want.To build the bridge between the concept of eHealth and iHealth, we will all have to work on concepts such as PORTABILITY, GLOBAL and CONNECTIVITY and considere remote diagnostics, Postoperative follow-up via mobile, Rehabilitation Sensors, Control the activity of Patients' medication in Real-time
