MiStreSS of CereMonieS: Suzie Suh

Suzie Suh was born in South Korea, raised in Orange County and went
to school in San Diego. She considers herself a true “So-Cal girl” at heart, and
really learned that “there’s no place like home” while moving around
the country for her job.

Before joining the CBS2/KCAL9 News Team in Los Angeles as a
General Assignment Reporter, Suzie worked as a reporter/fill-in anchor for the
CW affiliate in Las Vegas. She also spent a few cruel but beautiful winters in
Northwestern Montana where she ‘one-man-banded’ for an NBC affiliate.

Suzie’s passion for broadcast journalism is rooted in two things: learning something new everyday and
meeting the people who teach her those new things. From wildfires to wild car chases, she says every work
day is like taking a field trip.

When she’s not telling a story, Suzie enjoys spending time with her family, hip-hop and hula dancing, going
to the beach, trying to golf, and eating ice-cream.

Suzie is a member of the Asian American Journalists Association.

Jeff kiChaven, Mediator
For the first time, APADRC is awarding the Excellence in
Mediation Award. It was created this year to distinguish those
in mediation that exemplify the best of what mediation can do
for people. There are many people in different levels that practice
mediation, but few have the vast knowledge and experience in mediation as
well as embody its transformative power like Jeff Kichaven. Jeff ’s reputation
in the mediation field and in the community makes him the ideal person to
receive the Excellence in Mediation award.

Jeff Kichaven is an internationally recognized speaker and writer on mediation.
He is a leading voice on the ways lawyers and mediators can, and must, work
together to serve clients better. He has addressed audiences of lawyers in the
United States, Canada, and England for six sections of the American Bar Association (Business Law, Dispute
Resolution, Family Law, Law Practice Management, Litigation and Tort, Trial and Insurance Practice). He has also
addressed the Practicing Law Institute, ALI-ABA, the State Bar of California, the Texas Association of Mediators,
the North Carolina Bar Association, the Wisconsin Association of Mediators, the California Center for Judicial
Education and Research (“Judges’ College”), the USC Insurance Law Institute, California Continuing Education of
the Bar, the Los Angeles County and Beverly Hills Bar Associations, the national seminar series of the Negotiation
Strategy Institute and many other organizations. Several of his recent articles, including the widely published
“Mediation is Not for Sissies,” are included in his website.

In a dark period when funding for education is being cut at all levels, the
California Teachers Association promotes the value teachers hold in the
education of our children. Without all the remarkable teachers who have
shaped our leaders, innovators, healers, artists and community servants, our
world would lack the infrastructure to evolve and become better than the
previous generation. The Excellence in Education award is given to the
California Teachers Association for continuing to nurture the people who
educate and support those who will shape our world tomorrow.

The California Teachers Association (CTA) is California’s largest professional
employee organization, representing more than 325,000 public school teachers, counselors, psychologists, librarians,
other non-supervisory certificated personnel, and Education Support Professionals. CTA is affiliated with the
3.2 million-member National Education Association. More than 1,100 chapters or local teachers associations are
chartered as CTA affiliates. Two unique CTA Chapters are “statewide” affiliates: The California Faculty Association,
the bargaining agent for professors in the California State University system and the Community College
Association, representing members in 42 chapters who work in 72 community college districts across the state.

Vice President, Corporate Diversity and Inclusion

A passionate visionary leader, Tisa Jackson found her
calling more than 16 years ago and believes being a leader
in diversity and inclusion is a privileged obligation. She
was recently selected as one of “The Most Powerful
and Influential Women in California” by the California
Diversity Council. The list recognizes fifty women from
the state for their contributions in their respective fields.

Throughout her career Tisa has been a key architect in the
creation and transformation of diversity and inclusion
functions and programs within the financial services, high tech and non-profit industries
for Global 100, Fortune 100 and mid-size companies including: Deloitte, Advanced Micro
Devices (AMD), and the Y.W.C.A. Her work has been featured in publications such as the
Wall Street Journal and Diversity Journal. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Management and
Organizational Behavior and Political Communications from Emerson College in Boston, MA.

susan lee

Susan Lee is a senior at University High School. At the age of 12, Susan’s family
immigrated to America. However, living in a new country and culture without the
loving support of a family system to guide her during hard times was a tremendous
challenge. Her family is separated because her father continues his work in Korea
to financially support her family’s livelihood and educational endeavors in America.
Susan’s mother had many hardships to balance and sacrifices to make in order to
give her what she never had. Susan’s mother instilled in her a strong sense of self-
worth and pride with a focus on education. As the years moved on, she learned to
love and understand the diverse international culture of Los Angeles which gave her
new expectations and aspirations. Her family has given her the best opportunities
for freedom, education and spirituality here in the United States, and supported her
in all her endeavors, allowing her to be the best she can be. Susan will be attending
UCLA in the fall to major in Biology.

“I believe Peer Mediation serves a great purpose to fellow peers. I was able to help mediate issues that many
teachers who were a lot older were unable to relate to. It is a great tool to help students because it is easier for a
peer to understand what another peer is thinking. This program benefits not only peers, but teachers as well because
it allows them to focus on teaching instead of adolescent issues. Through this experience, I have learned that by
listening to people’s situations, I have shown respect toward their opinions.”

ashlee sandoval

Ashlee Sandoval is 17 years old and is a senior at University High School. She
is involved in many school activities such as Track and Field, Varsity Soccer,
Leadership, the Peer Mediation Program and being Co-Editor and Business
Manager for Yearbook. Outside of school she is in the Los Angeles Police
Department Explorers Program where she learns some police basics and
participates in tactical training. She enjoys the program because she has the chance
to meet new people, learn new things and keep in shape. She plans on attending
a college where she will learn everything necessary to prepare her for her future
career; she would like to become a police officer or a kindergarten teacher so she
can protect citizens or help children at the beginning stage of their education.

“Before I knew who mediators and mediations were, I would get in trouble in
school, many times. At one point a teacher got upset and sent me to the dean’s
office. From the Dean’s office they sent me to mediation with Mrs. Crowley, the Peer Mediation Coordinator. She
explained to me how it could be an option from being suspended and put down in my records, so I volunteered to
the mediation. After the mediation was done I asked her how I could make a difference in myself and she asked me
if I was interested in joining the mediation program, and since it helped a lot, I would join. From that moment on I
was fascinated by the program and I continue on till this point in my senior year. The program helped me open my
eyes to a better way to live my life and how to help others do the same. I turned from an emotional trouble maker
into a mature responsible individual. I appreciate the help I received and what I will give in my life.”

Kierra Keshon Washington

Kierra Keshon Washington is a senior attending King Drew Magnet High School
of Medicine and Science. Throughout her high school career she has been
involved in over 12 different organizations, but Peer Mediation by far has been one
of her unique and favorite esperiences. This is because she had the opportunity to
directly help students whom she sees everyday and is close in age with.

Kierra will be graduating this June and will be off to college in August. She
received acceptances to thirteen various colleges, but has not made a final decision
as of now. She plans to go to medical school and be a doctor in sports medicine.
Her senior year and work as a Peer Mediator is coming to an end, and she feels she
had an awesome experience and gained skills that she will always remember as well
as skills that will benefit her throughout life.

“Our community has more than enough violence, and by doing all that I can as a peer mediator to stop violence
within my school, I am also helping these students to realize they can remain peaceful and don’t have to result to
violence outside of school as well. Peace, respect and harmony are all things our community lacks, but is a goal that
needs to be met. I know bigger steps will be needed to bring peace to all of Los Angeles, and ultimately the world,
but through peer mediation, I am taking one step closer to spreading peace and accomplishing that goal.”

Band oF Mission indians
Pukúu Cultural Community Services

In honor of American Indian Heritage
Month, the Department of Cultural
Affairs awarded Pukúu Cultural
Community Services a grant to host a
MusicLA program for the City of Los
Angeles. For this program, Pukúu offered
10 music classes to students of American
Indian, Latino, Caucasian and mixed
ancestry. During these free sessions,
elementary, middle, and high school
students learned how to make their own
gourd instruments to sing and dance to
the traditional birdsongs of the
Fernandeño Tataviam Band of Mission Indians. Through Pukúu and the MusicLA classes, the Fernandeño
Tataviam Band of Mission Indians helped spread cultural awareness and foster an important sense of Los Angeles’
rich native history.
