Synata CEO Pat White discusses the movement from the paradigm of "platform stickiness" to "platform gravity" and what that means for IT and developers.
The "Cloud" is not just SaaS and production hosting. One of the easiest ways to start with the cloud is to use it for development and testing. Even if your company is concerned about going to the "Cloud". Dev/Test is a huge productivity enhancer, and a way to start small with the Cloud.

"What's the deal with Communication and Teams Sites?", "Should I use Teams or Groups for collaboration?", "Is on-premises dead?" Those questions sound familiar? Then let's talk about the different opportunities on how to orchestrate the core services of Office365 and SharePoint on-premises to deliver an intranet architecture that not only adds value but also drives user adoption. SPFx, PnP and Microsoft Graph build the technology base layer, whereas services like Flow, PowerApps or the Azure Bot Framework take your intranet to a new level. But never forget about the main target: your users must use it on a daily basis. This session gives an overview of the not so techie side, focusing on the tools in the design, architecture and roll-out phase and of course the setup of an ideal intranet project.

"Social media as a research and collaboration tool" - social media tips for PhD students presented at the University of Queensland School of Tourism, 18th July 2012
Making the most of Corporate Social Responsibility and Volunteer-collected vi...Regan Forrest
This presentation discusses a project to renovate the Australian Aboriginal Cultures Gallery (AACG) at the South Australian Museum. Volunteer visitors were tracked in the gallery to collect data on dwell times and movement patterns. The data was then analyzed to identify areas that were undervisited and biases in visitor routes. Insights from the data analysis were applied to improvements to the gallery, such as increasing light levels in undervisited sections, moving an introductory wall, and adding new interactive displays and seating areas. Lessons learned included the importance of visitor tracking and understanding the experience to improving exhibitions, and how volunteer-led projects can build relationships while providing valuable insights for the museum.

Perceived atmosphere - a tool for quantifying visitor perceptions of the exhi...Regan Forrest
This document presents a model for quantifying visitor perceptions of museum exhibition environments. It describes research that developed a survey with 30 semantic differentials to measure four factors of perceived atmosphere - Vibrancy, Spatiality, Modernity and Order. The survey was administered to over 600 visitors across four galleries at the South Australian Museum. Results showed differences in perceived atmosphere between galleries, with the Biodiversity gallery perceived as most vibrant and modern while the Pacific Cultures gallery was seen as most traditional. Higher vibrancy was found to predict greater visitor affective and cognitive engagement.
The document discusses engagement and participation in cultural institutions. It defines engagement as mutual learning between publics and experts, in contrast to one-way transmission of knowledge. Effective engagement involves reciprocity and acting together. Some key strategies discussed for public participation include allowing the public to shape content through voting, user-generated tagging and commenting, and encouraging the public to take on roles as both audiences and cultural producers through activities like contributing and sharing creative works. The benefits and challenges of different approaches are outlined. Examples provided include public voting to select art for exhibitions and an open studio event where the public nominated local artists.
The document discusses traditional web design versus growth-driven design. Traditional web design involves high upfront costs, takes resources and time, and carries risks of going over budget or late. It produces static websites that are not improved for 2 years. Growth-driven design uses a continuous improvement cycle of plan, build, learn, and transfer to launch a minimum viable website quickly and make ongoing improvements. It focuses on data-driven decisions and spreading work over time rather than large upfront costs.
Measuring Visitor Perceptions of the Exhibition EnvironmentRegan Forrest
This document proposes a model for characterizing exhibition environments based on visitor perceptions of atmosphere. It involves surveying visitors using 30 semantic differential scales measuring four factors: vibrancy, spatiality, modernity, and order. A pilot study applied this model in four galleries, finding differences in scores. The author suggests this approach provides an easy, content-neutral way to evaluate and compare exhibition spaces from the visitor perspective. It could help designers and may correlate with visitor cognitive and affective engagement. More testing is needed in different exhibition types.
Design Factors in the Museum Visitor ExperienceRegan Forrest
This document provides an overview of a PhD research project examining design factors that influence the museum visitor experience. The project will take a three-phase, mixed methods approach. Phase 1 involves qualitative data collection through accompanied visits and think-aloud interviews to understand how visitors perceive exhibition environments. Phase 2 will develop a quantitative instrument to measure environmental perceptions. Phase 3 will study the relationship between perceived atmospheres and visitor outcomes using the survey instrument and observation. The research aims to understand how design elements like spatiality and information rate shape the visitor experience and influence attention and learning. Preliminary thematic analysis of Phase 1 data identified key themes around objects, information, environment, and personal reflection.

O365Con18 - Migrating SharePoint to the Cloud - Jared ShockleyNCCOMMS
This document summarizes Microsoft IT's approach to migrating collaboration environments from on-premises to Office 365. It discusses preparing for migrations through activities like building test environments, evaluating new features, and dry runs. When supporting migrations, Microsoft IT establishes response teams, keeps old systems available, and communicates closely with customers. Lessons learned include treating dry runs seriously, viewing migration as an iterative process, and taking opportunities to simplify customizations. The presentation provides examples from Microsoft IT's own migration to Office 365 and recommendations for others undertaking similar transitions.

Minimum Viable Architecture -- Good Enough is Good Enough in a StartupRandy Shoup
I have spent the last decade building large-scale systems at eBay and Google -- and talking publicly about it -- and this presentation is about why a startup should completely ignore what I said! In an early-stage startup, it is not only not worth architecting for a future of massive scale; it is actively counterproductive. This presentation from the SF Startup CTO Summit outlines the common architectural evolution of a startup through the search, execution, and scaling phases, and discusses the appropriate technologies and disciplines at each phase. It ends with some real-world examples from eBay, Twitter, and Amazon to illustrate the point.
Minimum Viable Architecture - Good Enough is Good EnoughRandy Shoup
This document discusses the concept of minimal viable architecture and how architecture should evolve over time as a system grows. It recommends starting with simple prototypes and monolithic architectures, then transitioning to scalable architectures like microservices as needs increase. Key points are to solve current problems simply, use standard tools, iterate quickly, and focus on quality from the beginning rather than over-engineering prematurely. Architecture should progress from starting to scaling to optimizing phases as the system matures.
Office 365 - Disruption or Transformation
Microsoft has been polishing its Online Service offerings since the early 2000’s through its original Business Productivity Online Suite (BPOS) which has later become what we now know as Office 365.
It’s been a shaky road since 2010 but finally we are seeing remarkable technology come through Office 365 and into the hands of all users. By unpacking what is possible within the suite, companies are fence sitting as to whether it is Disruption or Transformation.
So, what do you think it is?
Let’s unload and explore the pro’s and con’s of what customers are experiencing and the strategic direction of Microsoft.

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:
