The Journey to Finding—and Empowering—Top Talent NamelyHR
The document discusses the changing nature of recruiting and talent management. It outlines two journeys - finding top talent through the recruiting process, and ensuring their high performance through talent management. The recruiting process involves defining needs, sourcing candidates, screening, interviewing, and making an offer. Talent management involves onboarding, managing performance through goals and feedback, and planning for employees' future roles within the organization. Technology helps make both processes more efficient and data-driven.
Strategic workforce planning provides the foundation for integrated talent management. It manages risk associated with workforce changes by using analytics to anticipate talent needs and make smart investments. While HR enables this process, workforce planning is an organizational responsibility. Most companies currently use a patchwork of disconnected HR systems. There are good reasons for caution when considering new solutions, as options vary in maturity and integration. Orca Eyes provides an enabling technology that works seamlessly across a company's existing systems to support workforce goals in a cost-effective way. It helps answer challenging questions around performance, retention, generational changes, and skills development through integrated data and predictive analytics.

Employee Rights Case Study
For seven years, Allen Lopez had worked for ExtremeNet, a well-known, global, high-technology
company that provides clients with Internet services such as e-commerce and Web development,
online marketing, strategic planning, and research. Allen was well paid and performed well in a
responsible middle-management position, which he found rewarding. However, as ExtremeNet
struggled to manage the effects of an economic downturn, Allen became disenchanted with the
company's treatment of lower-level employees, including his own assistant. Among Allen's concerns
were gender and age discrimination during layoffs, as well as changes to personnel policies that he
believed treated lower-level employees unfairly.
Allen's frustrations grew after he raised his concerns in vain with his superiors. What he did next put
his career in jeopardy: Working at home over several weekends, Allen created and published on the
Internet a satiric website that inveighed against the abusive management practices of a fictional
company that bore a striking resemblance to ExtremeNet. The site gained some notoriety among
high- tech websites and in the business press.
The vice presidents of ExtremeNet were incensed to learn of the site's existence and were concerned
that the site generated so much traffic and publicity. Although Allen protested that he acted out of a
sense of justice and asserted that his creative work was protected by his first amendment rights, this
did not prevent the leadership team of ExtremeNet from hastily assembling an emergency meeting to
decide whether Allen Lopez should be discharged, and whether ExtremeNet should file suit to have
his satirical website removed from the World Wide Web.

Write a six to eight (6-8) page paper in which you:
Analyze the prioritizing process at D. D. Williamson.
Suggest two (2) recommendations to improve the prioritizing process.
Create a scenario where the implemented process at D. D. Williamson would not work.
Project five (5) years ahead and speculate whether or not D. D. Williamson will be using the same process. Justify your answer.
Use at least four (4) quality (peer-reviewed) resources in this assignment.PROJECT MANAGEMENT IN ACTION: Prioritizing Projects at D. D. Williamson
One of the most difficult, yet most important, lessons we have learned at D. D. Williamson surrounds project prioritization. We took three years and two iterations of our prioritization process to finally settle on an approach that dramatically increased our success rate on critical projects (now called VIPs, or “Vision Impact Projects”).
Knowing that one of the keys to project management success is key management support, our first approach a ...
The document analyzes exposed cyber assets in critical sectors across US cities based on a Shodan scan of 178 million records. Some key findings:
- In emergency services, Houston and Lafayette had the most exposed assets, mainly printers and firewalls.
- In financial services, New York City had the most exposed assets due to being the US financial hub.
- In utilities, exposed assets were mostly in small towns, not large cities.
- In education, Philadelphia alone had over 65,000 exposed devices.
- The top 4 exposed ICS protocols were MODBUS, BACnet, EtherNet/IP, and Tridium Fox.
The document discusses Fujitsu's announcement of new entry-level and mid-range Eternus3000 storage array models. The larger model 600 can attach up to 240 fibre channel drives for 35TB maximum storage. It promises 80% faster I/O performance using 2.8GHz processors and a switched internal architecture using Vixel's Inspeed SOC between controllers and drives. This confirms storage vendors' continued interest in Vixel's Inspeed technology, which places a miniature fibre channel switch to establish point-to-point connections on arbitrated loops, improving performance and error recovery over standard arbitrated loops.
This document describes Dynamo, a highly available key-value storage system developed by Amazon to provide reliable data storage for some of its core services. Dynamo achieves high availability by allowing for some inconsistency under failure scenarios. It uses techniques like object versioning and application-assisted conflict resolution to maintain consistency among replicas. The system is decentralized and uses consistent hashing to partition and replicate data across nodes, with a quorum-based approach and decentralized synchronization protocol to maintain consistency during updates. Dynamo has proven able to scale efficiently to meet extreme peak loads for services like shopping carts without any downtime.
This document summarizes consistent hashing, an algorithm for distributing objects across a collection of cache machines or servers. It addresses the problem that when machines are added or removed, the distribution of objects needs to remain consistent to avoid overloading any single machine. Consistent hashing works by hashing both objects and machines and mapping them to positions on a circle, so that when a machine is removed its region on the circle is taken over by the next machine. It improves load balancing by using multiple replicas of each machine's position. The document provides an example Java implementation of consistent hashing to demonstrate how it works.
Amazon's Dynamo - All Things DistributedThomas Hughes
Dynamo is a highly available and scalable key-value storage system developed by Amazon to power parts of their infrastructure like S3. It sacrifices consistency in some failure scenarios to maintain availability. Dynamo uses techniques like consistent hashing, versioning, quorum protocols and gossip-based failure detection to distribute data across nodes and handle failures without a single point of failure. The paper describes Amazon's motivation for developing Dynamo and its architecture for incrementally scaling while allowing developers to configure consistency, performance, and other tradeoffs.
This document discusses the potential economic impacts of artificial intelligence (AI) driven automation. It finds that AI will open up new economic opportunities but may also disrupt jobs and increase inequality if not properly managed. While AI could boost productivity and economic growth, many jobs may be automated, requiring workers to gain new skills. The report outlines three policy strategies to maximize the benefits of AI: 1) Investing in developing beneficial AI technologies, 2) Educating and training workers for future jobs, and 3) Assisting workers impacted by automation and ensuring the benefits of AI are broadly shared. With the right policies, AI could improve living standards while mitigating costs through retraining and support for displaced workers.
This study compared the self-reported security practices of security experts to non-experts. The researchers conducted online surveys of 231 security experts and 294 non-experts recruited from Amazon Mechanical Turk. They found that experts considered keeping systems updated, using strong unique passwords, two-factor authentication, and password managers as most important. Non-experts considered antivirus software, strong passwords, frequent password changes, and only visiting trusted sites as very effective, but were less likely to update systems and had less trust in password managers. The findings can help inform better security advice for non-experts.

here?
To discusses systems that enable us to answer
these simple questions that executives ask.
Why can't’ we add this simple feature for our best
customer…. We will make millions….
We have hundreds of people! What is everyone
doing?
Where are the R&D dollars going?
How can we cut 10% from R&D and still grow the
company?

Journey
We sat in a hotel room deep into due diligence
Simple questions needed to be answered …
Six months later post merger yet another hotel
How do we integrate all of these acquisitions…
○ 4 development centers
○ 400 People
○ 120 Projects
I made the mistake of having an idea… next
thing you knew I owned the problem.

…Hit the release train or you're out…
…We need the new product in 3 qtrs…
…I do not care what it cost to make we need price reductions
based on time not volume…
Ever changing yet the same – Management
…Can we do this… only 6 new features…tap tap tap well…
…What did we spend on supporting those releases last
year?...
…We have to take 10% out of R&D but still hit our revenue
numbers…we need your plan by tomorrow…

business was successful and
growing
Background:
500+ projects and growing; grouped into
100+ programs; using close to 1000
resources. Spanning 7 Development centers
and many time zones.
Results:
Programs approved with no staff; staff
double counted and double booked. People

Decisions…
We quickly decided to scrap our spread sheet
system – as brilliant as it was… it was time to
grow up….
We would keep a familiar Excel like interface to
minimize training and support.
It would sit on top of an Oracle database
infrastructure.
Searched the market – tried many systems from
$50K to $1,000K; Interviewed many peers at
other companies – Made a Selection

Build chart….. The sub bullets are the reasons why…. Last bullet because… it ends the debate spoken word to close…..
Open up with there are 4 points to watch out for.
I am going to tell the story….
Bought time in start up phase – but only practical if the data set is quite small and limited linkages are present.
Talk about resource man
Mother of all spread sheets—A labor of love…. My child… DRAMA
Multi sheet Xls work book based on elementary DB structures
Partition of key data – resource, projects, effort
Macros to check and limit data entry
“Shared mode”
Pivot tables provide some level of cross tabs
Charting functions available
Define Enterprise class – we had to grow up to be with the big boys
Setting the straw man up here
Give two or three reasons why this was true
Everything else becomes play acting… if no one believes the data…. How could there be anything worse than this….
The conversion of ideas to stable revenue streams do follow a general flow –
We brought in a consultancy to help drive us to a common view of what processes we had to firm up in this case it was PRTM
A cross functional team of VOLENTEER managers and leaders was brought in – Each major area was assigned an Executive sponsor reporting to the office of the CEO. I owned the resource portion
PRTM independent facilitators with extensive subject knowledge – Enabled the team to drive to closure faster than if left alone. Fostered debate and backed it up with knowledge on what is best in class in the different environments.
Minimize training

Crescendo effect – Under 2 qtr is amazing…. Thanks to the consultancy
Locked and loaded – smoken fast….
Define what you mean by beginning at the end…. This is where our work ended up… it shows direct value…. This is an announcement….make it strong… I will show some direct outputs of the new systems and then walk us through our path that got us there….
Stress Accurate – a level above simple accurate-- Visible
More than I just explained… from the previous slides.
Emotional pitches gone….
Explain SOP 97-2 Requirements He thinks this is a big take away… for the audiences. Tie it to hardware… it will be a takeaway… I will be he only person that mentions the 97-2 rule so expand on it….
Do not – say I know you cannot read it… do not apologize for it being small….
What you can see is a graphic view showing the structure of the data…. Produced in mins. Not days and is accurate….
Define – strategic projects; Canceled and sustaining
Sell the slide, sell the graph…. Do not just say it… this is an important point meant to wake people up.
With out auditable data this analysis is useless it is what makes it actionable data….
The yield you get from canceling projects earlier….
With this data you are able to see how budgets can be modified
Once the data was structured we found…
Our product portfolio was choking out new developments the tendency to spend on the current platform not on the new
The tendency of all R&D dollars to drift to our current customers and markets out all other developments
Most of our RD dollars was going into current products, customers and markets. Making Incremental improvements but not opening up new sources of revenue.
We were spending less than half as much on developing new platforms even in our current markets
And, most of the decisions to go forward with incremental projects was based on analysis that did not allocate 30million dollars of R&D dollars. Drivers, common infrastructure
Once we put into place systems to allocate ALL development dollars we plainly saw that a number of the incremental developments should be defunded.
As you will see on the next side this data drove substantial changes to our product portfolio - The system we put into place passively drove a more productive product portfolio

new markets
Many developments were at best new platforms for old customers

Where data came from
The need for data to drive on cycle and Off cycle reviews…. Need the ability for off cycle
Need actionable and accurate data….
