"Freeze" is the latest in the series of "common art" pieces using alcohol ink drip playing as well as digital image editing. This series was started in January 2021 as a stress relief in a time of the SARS-CoV-2 / COVID-19 pandemic. My purpose was to learn both about the materials and some of the other lesser-used aspects of the software tools.

- 10. Freeze • “Freeze” is the latest in the alcohol ink drip playing series, which was started in January 2021. The idea was to use the alcohol inks and synthetic papers to serve as distraction during this second year of the SARS-CoV-2 / COVID-19 pandemic. In that time, a number of slideshows have been created and shared. 10
- 11. Freeze(cont.) • In terms of the state of the pandemic, the U.S. is in its so-called fourth wave. Some 13% of the population has had the infection and survived it, but with a majority with some forms of “long COVID.” Some 70% of the U.S. population has had at least one shot of the COVID-19 vaccines and some level of protection. There is talk of acquiring second doses (of J&J) and third doses (of Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna) of vaccinations for fuller protections as the potency wanes. • In the meantime, a majority of us is back at work (many of us already back full-time for almost five months now). We are trying our best to stave off infection. We are trying to outrun the risks from those who are unvaccinated and unmasked. 11
- 12. Freeze (cont.) • Bamboo paper (constituting 90% bamboo, 10% cotton) is an eminently sustainable option vs. synthetic paper (recyclable plastic). Its texture is supple. If one wasn’t told what the paper consists of, one could never guess from touch alone. • Several digitally edited works in this collection use bamboo paper. • I recently acquired for watercolor pencils, and those are included in a few of these works, too. It is always delightful to explore a new art tool and see how it interacts with other materials. (It’s totally fun to be a newbie.) • Some of the works here were scanned with a new scanner! You can see that there are fewer artifacts with the scanner. 12

Freeze (cont.) • Per the goals of the common artist, the idea was to not only learn about the analog materials but also digital image editing. • Technology has always entranced. • One of my laptops failed in this time period, was repaired, and failed again a month later. I am using a provisional machine currently. • The built-in AI and accessibility elements in PowerPoint can be highly useful. But the AI clearly was not trained on unusual common art. • One of the visuals here was (amusingly) labeled a “mollusk,” which was not my intention although I could see why a machine vision AI might guess that. For a hot second, I was tempted to rename the visual but decided against that. I won’t name the visual, so as not to spoil the illusion. 13
