Professional Experience
President & CEO, Progress Energy Carolinas, Raleigh, North Carolina
2003–2007
Provided daily leadership for organization of 2,500 employees located in North
Carolina, South Carolina and Florida, and had responsibilities for overall financial
performance of Progress Energy Carolinas (PEC). PEC serves 1.4 million customers in
a 34,000-square-mile service area that includes Raleigh, Asheville, Fayetteville and
Wilmington, North Carolina, and Florence, South Carolina. It has over $4 billion in
total electric revenue and $11.5 billion in assets, and experiences annual customer
growth of 2.1 percent. Core functions include four regional operations departments,
a distribution engineering organization and transmission operations and planning
for the Carolinas. The PEC organization also managed the customer service function
for PEC and Progress Energy Florida, through one customer service center in North
Carolina and two in Florida, which handled all call center operations, meter reading,
credit and collection for over $8 billion in revenue.
The holding company for PEC is Progress Energy, headquartered in Raleigh, a
Fortune 250 diversified energy company with more than 21,000 megawatts of
generation capacity, $10 billion in annual revenues and $11 billion in market
capitalization. Its two electric utilities serve more than 3.1 million customers in
North Carolina, South Carolina and Florida. Progress Energy also has nonregulated
operations including competitive generation, energy marketing, natural gas
production and fuel extraction.

Professional and Civic Leadership Positions:
 North American Transmission & Distribution Group (board member, 2013–present), a
holding company and investment strategy to acquire and grow domestic companies that
support mission-critical elements of the electric utility grid. Through its capital partner
Falfurrias, acquisitions include Instrument Transformer Equipment Corporation based in
Monroe, NC, and Advanced Control Systems, Inc.
 Texas Reliability Entity (board member, 2010–present; chairman, 2011–2013), an
Austin-based Federal Energy Regulatory Commission-approved Regional Entity for the
Electric Reliability Council of Texas region. Texas RE is authorized to develop, monitor,
assess and enforce compliance with North American Electric Reliability Corporation
Reliability Standards and assess and periodically report on the reliability and adequacy
of the bulk-power system.
 Triangle Transit (board member, 2010–present; chairman, 2012–2014), an operator of
regional bus and shuttle service, vanpools and commuter resources for the Raleigh-
Durham-Chapel Hill area, including RDU International Airport and Research Triangle
Park. Triangle Transit is a key player in planning for regional transit needs in the fast-
growing Triangle, contributing to the area’s quality of life and economic health.
 McKim & Creed (2009–present; independent board member and chairman, Audit
Committee), a firm providing engineering, geomatics and sustainable design services
with a mission of helping clients provide clean water, create safe communities, and
build and maintain sustainable infrastructure.
 Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce (board member, 2003–2010; chairman, 2004–
2005). The Chamber’s mission is to sustain and further develop a thriving economy and
to promote a quality community as an excellent place to live, work and raise a family.
 Co-Chairman, Reality Check (2007–2008), a 15-county regional planning process that
engages the public, private and civic sectors in discussions about growth and how the
Research Triangle region can best compete in a global economy.
 Co-Chairman, Blue Ribbon Committee on the Future of Wake County (2006–2008), a
committee of 65 business and community leaders charged with studying Wake County’s
growth and infrastructure needs for the next 25 years, and making recommendations to
County Commissioners about paying for those needs.
 Association of Edison Illuminating Companies (board member, 2000–2007; president,

nonprofit corporation established by the state’s Lieutenant Governor to help
grow the state’s defense and security economy.
 Landis + Gyr (2008–2013); advisory board for US operations; worldwide leader
in electricity metering with a preeminent position in advanced or “smart
metering systems” – an essential component in global efforts to upgrade energy
distribution systems and enable power to be distributed more efficiently and
reliably.
 Rex Hospital Foundation Golf Tournament (chairman, 2006 and 2007), a
Nationwide PGA tour event held in Raleigh that serves as a fundraiser for the
foundation that supports the hospital.
 North Carolina Economic Development Board (2006–2007); appointed by the
Governor to state’s top economic development policy advisory body,
responsible for recommending economic development policy to the Governor.
 North Carolina Education Ball (chairman, 2006), an annual statewide event to
