France and Libya had an economic relationship due to trade of raw materials, but also rivalry due to French influence in North Africa. One source of tension was the Aouzou Strip border region rich in uranium, which Libya annexed in 1976 but Chad later reclaimed, likely with French support. Gaddafi was also unhappy with French presence in Niger, another source of uranium. When the Arab Spring began in 2011, France was quick to attack Gaddafi, possibly due to past tensions and Gaddafi's new alliances with Russia and Italy.
