There are 4 main types of distributed ledger technologies: proof of work, leader-based, economy-based, and hashgraph. Proof of work uses miners to validate transactions and reaches consensus but is energy intensive. Leader-based uses designated leaders but is vulnerable to DDoS attacks and scaling issues. Economy-based is self-regulated but not provably secure. Hashgraph achieves very high speeds, deterministic finality, and is resistant to DDoS attacks.
