Fossil fuels are the remains of ancient plants and animals that have undergone heat and pressure over millions of years to form coal, oil, and natural gas. Coal forms from decaying plant matter that is compressed over time. It is primarily used to generate electricity but can also be burned for heat. Oil forms from the remains of marine organisms and is refined for use in transportation and manufacturing. Natural gas forms in a similar way from organic material and is a cleaner-burning fuel used for electricity and transportation. Refineries process crude oil into usable fuels and products. Major oil spills like Exxon Valdez and Deepwater Horizon have caused environmental damage difficult to remedy.
