Tribal wars in Southern Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea are caused by land disputes, political issues, revenge killings, and unequal distribution of land royalties. They have severe impacts on society by destroying communities and families and causing long-term harm. Economically, they result in the loss of infrastructure and decline in the working population. Politically, they disrupt elections and government systems. To reduce tribal wars, the document suggests banning weapons, making fair legal decisions, paying proper compensation, and evenly distributing land royalties.

In recent years Europe has been experiencing the wave of national populism and a clash between antagonistic forms of national identities within its societies. Currently, we can observe a clash between antagonistic forms of national identities (ethnic nationalism versus civic nationalism). All these issues are studied in a detail in the report titled “Civic European Cities in the Age of National Populism” written by Adam Balcer under the patronage of Gdańsk.

What Underlying Factors Led Liberia and Ivory Coast into Civil Wars?

Abstract
The civil wars witnessed in Liberia and Ivory Coast had causative factors. Most of these factors are the usual and obvious factor that rock such countries. However, there was more to the wars than the common causes. For example, in Liberia, Charles Tailor who represented the population of the former slaves brought in towards the end of Slavery in America, was opposed to Doe, who represented the indigenous communities in the country. Liberia had been used to a rule by people who were slaves but Doe, an indigenous person rose to the top seat in the early 1980s. This did not go well with the likes of Charles Taylor and they started an armed rebellion to his rule.
In Ivory Coast, almost the same script happened. The technocrats were opposed to be ruled by people they considered outsiders. This pitted Alassane Ouattara against Laurent Gbagbo because they considered Ouatarra an outsider. Together with other immigrants, they were targeted and several people were killed as a result. Comment by Linda Stevenson: In a civil war, usually the numbers are more accurately described as “thousands” or “tens of thousands.”

Civil wars have occurred in many countries in the world. While the starting of the wars is seemingly spontaneous, many civil wars are caused by various factors that come at play either deliberately or as a result of the war itself. The civil wars in Africa particularly are caused by many factors. These factors range from differences in political background, poor economies, intolerance among members of different communities among others. There is even blame on their former colonial masters and other Western countries. The result of these wars is a dilapidated country, infrastructure, loss of lives, increased number of refugees and internally displaced persons among others. We present a detailed, high-frequency data set on the civil conflict in Colombia during the period 1988–2002. We briefly introduce the Colombian case and the methodological issues that hinder data collection in civil wars, before presenting the pattern over time of conflict actions and intensity for all sides involved in the confrontation. We also describe the pattern of victimisation by group and the victimisation of civilians out of clashes.

Unit 2 Discussion Board Assignment
Throughout history, commercial and economic concerns have tremendously influenced the development of culture and politics in countries throughout the world. Analyze how cultural and political developments of the United States were similarly influenced by the listed economic and commercial concerns.
Since America’s independence, vast differences have developed from region to region. Consider how the historical antebellum developments of the more urban and commercial North and the more rural and agricultural South led to differences in the culture, political parties, and ethnic and racial perspectives of the two regions and eventually gave way to the American Civil War. Historians have long debated the causes of the American Civil War and have generally agreed these causes to be rooted in political, economic, and social differences.
Use the following outline to format your response:
Paragraph 1
How did historical regional differences affect the development of political structures in the United States?
What examples do you see in current times of how these events affected the U.S. development of culture and society?
Paragraph 2
Describe 2 fundamental reasons why the American Civil War occurred.
Given the circumstances of the conflict, explain whether or not the war could (or should) have been avoided.

What Causes Countries to Enter Civil War?
Introduction
For the purpose of IPI’s project on Understanding Compliance with Security Council Resolutions in Civil Wars, a civil war consists of one or several simultaneous disputes over generally incompatible positions that concern government and/or territory in a state; are causally linked to the use of armed force, resulting in at least 500 battle-related deaths during a given year during the conflict; and involve two or more parties, of which the primary warring parties are the government of the state where armed force is used, and one or several non-state opposition organization(s).
There are many different reasons that countries enter civil war. These factors can arise from anything economic, social, ethnic, cultural disputes or a combination of several of these factors. No matter the number of the reasons, a civil war can be devastating, causing loss of many lives, properties and leaving a country utterly ravished. The aftermath can also present much difficulty to deal with considering the complete destruction of a country’s basic infrastructures, economy, educational systems and sometimes even government. Nevertheless, there is always a reason for an uprising or civil war and we will be looking at some of the motivations behind a country’s civil war.
Social Disputes
Social disputes can be the cause of many civil conflicts in countries all around the world. However, there are factors that give rise to the struggle between or among social classes; and these issues can be related to economic hardship or differences among social classes, religion, cultural social or ethnic differences and many other problems that can directly or indirectly cause social uprising. To explain extant and recent cases of religion-ethnic conflict in Africa, (Kaplan 1994) “seeks to account for them by reference to three main factors: cultural dysfunction; loose family structures; and communalism and animism”, (J. Haynes 2007) describing Africa’s recent civil wars, like those in Liberia and Sierra Leone, as anarchic and primitive. He claims that they were initially caused by fixed ethnic and cultural realities, limiting the involvement of the western world.
Nevertheless kaplan’s theory, (Collier and Hoeffler n.d., p. 1) offer another explanation for ‘‘the rising trend of African conflict’’ identified by SIPRI: ‘‘Africa has experienced a rising trend of conflict because its economies have performed so poorly both absolutely and relative to other regions’’ (J Hayne 2007). The cause of civil war is not always automatically the result of deep problems within Africa’s social structure; or necessarily from obvious or serious religious and, or ethnic fragmentation. The cause of civil conflict can also be associated with the contingent effect of discouraging economic circumstances and development disappointments. There are two major points that are worth taking a look at with regards to discouraging economic circumsta.

Religious Conflicts in the Congo
Mansour Alhussain
Introduction
Religion is one of the most powerful and destructive tools that can be used in warfare, because it reinforces the ethnicity of the people thus making it a cruel and intractable line to use to divide people
In most cases, religion is not the reason for the conflict, but plays a key role in the promotion of the conflict.
Examples of conflicts where religion has played a major role includes the Shia-Sunni conflict, and the 30 years war. A common one that has happened in different parts of the world is the Islamic Jihad.
2
Introduction
Religion is powerful because it reinforces the ethnicity of different groups of people. While religion is not as simple as ethnicity, as it can not be used as a reason for any conflicts or war. It fuels the motive for the conflict.
In the Shia- Sunni conflict for instance, both parties were from the Islamic backgrounds, but the differences resulted from differences in the spirituality. Political differences then made part of the package after Muhammad died and the successor of the Islam faith had not yet been chosen.
3
Religious Conflicts
The biggest and most influential religions, that is Judaism, Islam, and Christianity, have the following similarities.
They are all monotheistic (That is they all believe one God)
They are all part of Abraham’s genealogy
They accept sin, value praying, and see the need to seek forgiveness from God
Find meaning in life through having a profound and personal relationship with God
4
Religion as a source of conflicts
Religion is therefore used as a source of Conflict because:
Belief that a specific religion is of a chosen people
Belief that choosing the right religion can be by force
Religion being seen from history as a point of conflict
Religion can play a pivotal role such that those involved in the conflict cannot identify the issue anymore, because it could overlap an array of reasons.
5
Religious Conflicts in the Congo
In the Congo, the real reason behind the conflict is a number of issues, needs and grievances that affects a big part of the countries that are found around the central parts of the African continent.
These reasons can be further broken down into political, economic, and even military reasons, but because there are two religions of Islam and Christianity, the conflict tends to be seen as a religious one.
Turning the conflict into a religious one is the surest way for the people to turn against each other as then wed have only two conflicting sides.
6
Beginning of the Conflict
The Congo Conflict, also known as the World War of Africa broke out in 1998 and officially ended in the month of July, 1998. It involved about 9 countries from Africa and 20 militia groups from these 9 countries.
The war caused the death of 5 more than 5 million people in those 5 years, few of which died from the conditions that are presented by the aftermath of the war, especi ...
War is blood. The lifeblood of war is anger. Civil conflicts and war result into disintegration. The lifeblood of a state is its citizens. The lifeblood of citizen support for the government is the level of happiness. With the level of happiness dropping we certainly experience an increase level of anger. Anger means conflict and the disintegration of the entire socioeconomic system (Verhoeven, Duyvendak, 2016) . Anger is more powerful than reason (Yones, 1998) . A moment of anger can destroy years of prosperity, but anger is the result of chronic distrust in the government.
One good case study is the situation in the State of Lebanon after 17 years of civil war pictures exactly this distrust in the government, viewed by 79% of the respondents as the primary source of stress, followed by Physical safety in 61% percent (Yones, 1998) . Physical safety is important especially after a period of conflict. The people need to feel secure and be secure. Third on their list on the causes of stress is Income. 58% percent of respondents considered that Income is a major source of stress (Yones, 1998) .
Ethnic Conflict and Its Threats to Democracysdebrouwere
In the past two decades, ethnic and national conflicts have clearly re-emerged as one of the greatest, and potentially most dangerous, political problems in the international arena. A series of violent conflicts have erupted in Europe, Asia and Africa, claiming the lives of many thousands of victims, and injuring and displacing many more. In sight of this overwhelming evidence, academia finds itself obliged to ask why nationalism and ethnonationalism can prompt such violence, how they can wreck havoc and in what way these horror-scenarios can be adverted. This presentation considers the threats posed to democratic values by the existence of serious ethnic conflict within a single national territory, and investigates several structural solutions (including, but not limited to, partition, secession, integration, federalism and consociationalism). As such, it hopes to clear out which holds the best hope of success.
War is blood. The lifeblood of war is anger. Civil conflicts and war result into disintegration. The lifeblood of a state is its citizens. The lifeblood of citizen support for the government is the level of happiness. With the level of happiness dropping we certainly experience an increase level of anger. It is something that is built within the individual and which is transferred to the community.

In a May 9, 2024 paper, Juri Opitz from the University of Zurich, along with Shira Wein and Nathan Schneider form Georgetown University, discussed the importance of linguistic expertise in natural language processing (NLP) in an era dominated by large language models (LLMs).
The authors explained that while machine translation (MT) previously relied heavily on linguists, the landscape has shifted. “Linguistics is no longer front and center in the way we build NLP systems,” they said. With the emergence of LLMs, which can generate fluent text without the need for specialized modules to handle grammar or semantic coherence, the need for linguistic expertise in NLP is being questioned.
