Around 90 per cent of electricity consumers pay for more than

Why do you need to optimise your supply?
Electrical equipment (such as motors, HVAC and lighting)
performs inefficiently when exposed to excessive voltage and
poor power quality. Take a normal 230V rated lamp – when run
at 240V, it will fail after 550 hours instead of 1000, drawing nine

an entire site, with every single component failing faster and

Wagga Wagga Marketplace, an ISPT property, is
one of the largest shopping centres in regional
NSW with 21,000m2 of retail space. Its energy
needs are equally as large. Retail operations
typically have significant energy use, due to
large amounts of lighting, air conditioning and
refrigeration. These types of equipment see high
levels of savings from VPO.
Unlike most energy saving initiatives, VPO achieves savings
across all equipment on the optimised electrical supply. In
June 2011, two VPO units were installed at ISPT Wagga Wagga
Marketplace. The units were designed specifically for the site
electrical infrastructure to optimise the energy saving benefit
for the client. At Wagga Wagga the installation has reduced
consumption by 15.3%.

a 15 year warranty as standard and is backed by a performance

Single integrated unit
The power conditioning benefits are integrated into a single unit
with no moving parts.
Since there are no additional components the unit is very
efficient. As a result, it requires no forced air cooling or ongoing
temperature monitoring.

Maintenance
powerPerfector units aren’t sold with a maintenance contract. In
fact, apart from the regulatory periodic wiring inspection, which

Dynamic VPO - the powerPerfector Plus.
powerPerfector’s award-winning Voltage Power Optimisation can be
integrated into the energy efficiency plans of organisations ranging from
SMEs to the largest government departments.
The powerPerfector Plus features dynamic VPO, adapting automatically to changing voltage
conditions, and optimising in a fixed output band, so you always make the maximum savings.
All powerPerfector Plus units are equipped with five voltage optimisation settings available that are
automatically selected by the Automatic Voltage Controller (AVC). Settings are in equal increments
with three minus settings and one “boost” setting, able to raise the mains voltage if it drops below
the optimum range.
Output voltage can also be manually adjusted online or through the unit’s user interface.
Putting you in control
• Manual/automatic control using online interface (as seen below) or unit control panel
• Normal Automatic mode: The AVC controls the optimisation setting ensuring that the output
voltage is not less than the predetermined value – Minimum Output Voltage (MOV) which can be
set to 1V increments.
• Password protected LCD colour touch screen panel.
• Boost Manual/Automatic: If the incoming supply voltages drops lower than the MOV, the AVC is
capable of boosting that voltage to maintain an optimal supply.
• In the unlikely event of an AVC electronic fault or a change in supply conditions, the AVC will has
its own built in voltage optimisation bypass function to ensure that supply is not interrupted
resulting in output voltage being the same as supply voltage. If this occurs the AVC will send an
email to users to alert them of an AVC issue or supply fault.

Getting technical.
2. Balance across the three phase voltages is improved by the
regulating effect of the powerPerfector’s star-connected
secondary windings. Improvements in phase balancing of
over 20% have been observed, which dramatically increases
the efficiency of 3-phase AC motor equipment, common in air
distribution systems, resulting in less noise and vibration.
3. Harmonic filtration is integrated into the design of the
powerPerfector, giving an attenuation in Total Harmonic
Distortion (THD). As harmonics are potentially damaging to
electronic equipment, and known to reduce the efficiency of
HV transformers, this is an important function that delivers
tangible energy saving benefits.
4. As a result of the power conditioning benefits, a typical
powerPerfector installation improves the Power Factor of your
site by between 5% and 10%. This may alleviate the need
for additional Power Factor Correction (PFC), although the
powerPerfector is fully compatible with this type of equipment.
Considerable reductions in reactive power have been achieved,
reducing penalty charges from electricity suppliers.
5. The powerPerfector will protect a site from common transients,
which can have a devastating effect on sensitive electronic
equipment. The number of transients is likely to rise due to
increased switching on the supply network, so our units provide
a vital defence for your electrical systems.

powerPerfector schematicThe powerPerfector is an optimiser,
not a conventional voltage transformer
or autotransformer.
Voltage transformers are used extensively in a variety of
applications to bring voltage from one level to another, and
autotransformers are widely used in control applications. Such
devices can approach a high level of efficiency under certain
loading conditions, but are not specifically designed to be energy
saving devices.
Technical basics
The powerPerfector optimiser is designed to deliver energy
savings at source. It will address a number of common power
supply problems in a single unit and, uniquely, all these
improvements are achieved through the internal interaction of
magnetic fields, with no active suppression or compensation,
meaning that moving parts or electronics are not required. The
design is extremely efficient and its performance and reliability
are unmatched by any ‘voltage management’ technology
available in Australia and New Zealand today.
How VPO works
1. Incoming voltage – typically around 242V – is brought to
the optimum operating level for most equipment at around
220V. By correcting these over-voltage conditions equipment
downstream will consume less energy. In motors, for example,
over-voltage drives the core into saturation, which wastes
energy as heat. The powerPerfector corrects this with up to
99.94% efficiency or better, so the resulting savings are not
significantly offset by energy loss in the unit itself.
