3. Last year President Barack Obama and former President
Bill Clinton toured the construction site at 815 Connecticut
Avenue, an office building just one block away from the
White House that at the time was being converted into a
more energy efficient, environmentally friendly facility.
Shortly after the visit, President Obama declared that nearly
$4 billion would be dedicated to energy updates over the
following two years as part of the Better Buildings
Challenge. The combined federal and private sector
investment will yield billions of dollars in energy savings
while promoting energy independence for the United States
and creating tens of thousands of jobs in the construction
and sustainability industries. The Better Buildings Challenge
is part of an overarching conservation initiative that intends
to make the country 20 percent more energy efficient by
2021 while reducing energy costs by about $40 billion.
