STRENGTH OF MATERIALS
Suresh Angadi Education Foundation’s
ANGADI INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY & MANAGEMENT
POLYTECHNIC
SAVAGAON ROAD, BELAGAVI – 590 009.
10/10/2019 1
Syllabus Covered :
Force and characteristics of a force,
Force system: - Definition,classification of force system
according to plane and line of action,
UNIT-1 INTRODUCTION TO ENGINEERING
MECHANICS
( Marks : 15 Weightage : 10% )

Force is an external agent capable of changing the state of
rest or motion of a particular body.
Push or pull of an object is considered a force.
Push and pull come from the objects interacting with one
another.

SYSTEMS OF FORCES
When a mechanics problem or system has more than one force acting, it is
known as a ‘force system’ or ‘system of force’.
10/10/2019 5
Coplanar forces- Coplanar forces means the forces in a plane.
Or a system in which all the forces lie in the same plane, it is known as
coplanar force system.
10/10/2019 6
Collinear Force System
When the lines of action of all the forces of a system act along the same line,
this force system is called collinear force system.
10/10/2019 7
Parallel Forces
Parallel forces are those forces
which are in the same plane
but never intersect by each
other and they may be same or
opposite in
direction.
Concurrent Forces-
Concurrent forces are those
forces which are acting at a
same point and at a same
plane, also they may be pull
or push in nature.
10/10/2019 8
Non-coplanar forces
Non-coplanar forces are those
forces which are not
acting from a same plane.
Non coplanar non- concurrent
forces-
Non- Coplanar non-concurrent
forces are those forces which are
not acting at a same point and
not at a same plane, also they
may be pull or push in nature.
10/10/2019 9
Non-coplanar concurrent forces-
Non- Coplanar concurrent forces
are those forces which are acting
at a same point but not from a
same plane, also they may be pull
or push in nature.
Non-coplanar parallel forces-
Non-coplanar Parallel forces are
those forces which are not in the
same plane and never intersect by
each other, they may be same or
opposite in direction.
