For this assignment, students are asked to imagine themselves as a curator of Ancient or Medieval Art (prehistory to ca. 1300 CE). In this role, you will select five (5) artworks that fit a selected theme and propose an exhibition of those artworks. Your exhibition may compare works across time and cultures, but a good curatorial thesis will remain focused and narrow in its scope (for instance, comparing the idealized male form in Egypt, Greece, and Rome would be too much for this project. But looking at Archaic Greece in comparison to Classical Greece is appropriate). Themes may be cultural, stylistic, or even based in a discussion of material – any uncertainty should be discussed with your instructor. This assignment requires scholarly research. The written component of this project should be 500-750 words, or 2-3 pages, in length. Please limit your papers to 3 pages; a too-long paper needs more assertive revision to clarify the main thesis and supporting arguments. Use 11.5 or 12-point font, preferably Times. Double space your text and use 1” margins. Number each page starting on page 2. No cover page is necessary. PART ONE: CURATORIAL THESIS STATEMENT (60% of grade) The Big Idea A successful exhibition tells a good story and facilitates a productive encounter between the objects displayed and the viewer. How you select, juxtapose, and describe your objects will frame the argument you make in your exhibition. Museum professionals use a curatorial thesis to communicate their vision when they plan and execute exhibitions. A curatorial thesis is a statement of what an exhibition is about. Topics are incomplete thoughts; the thesis tells you why the topic is important and what it explains about the world. Write a brief curatorial argument (500-750 words) to introduce the thesis of your exhibition. A good introductory essay presents the objects in your exhibition in historical context. Your essay should address a central theme/question/problem: for example, if your exhibition treats aspects of the funerary arts in ancient Egypt, you might first introduce your selected artworks generally as artistic and cultural artifacts. Then you should contextualize those objects: how were the objects created, viewed or used? The challenge of an introductory essay is to remain specific, that is, focused on the objects as unique, material, historical and original artworks. All students will be required to visit the Tampa Museum of Art, the St. Petersburg Museum of Fine Arts, the
Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, or the Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota. Students will write a minimum
1500 word research paper (approx. 5 pages in length) based on one artwork of their choosing from the
museum to investigate in further detail. The completed paper is due at the beginning of class on the assigned
due date (see course syllabus for deadlines).
This assignment will require students to a thoughtful analysis based on accepted research as well as your own
developed point of view. Completed essays will be sustained thesis-driven interpretations of a single artwork
based on scholarly research (three sources minimum are required).
When selecting your artwork, pick the one that appeals to you and that you want to further examine. (Keep in
mind that you may want to select an object that has already had significant scholarly research within art
history.) A brief visual analysis of the selected artwork will ultimately support your thesis and lend credence to
your research. Meaning, your discussion of the artist’s selection and use of the visual elements and principles
of design should connect to your broader knowledge of style and pictorial culture, as we have discussed them
in class lecture. Your analysis should also move from description to interpretation as it relates to your central
argument – i.e., the particular qualities of the medium (ceramic, sculpture, painting, etc.) and how this relates

Visiting a Museum
It makes sense to approach a museum the way a seasoned traveler approaches visiting a city for the first time. Find out what there is available to see. In the museum, find out what sort of exhibitions are currently housed in the museum and start with the exhibits that interest you.
If there is a travelling exhibition, it’s always a good idea to see it while you have the chance. Then, if you have time, you can look at other things in the museum.
Every effort should be made ahead of time to identify a museum that has items and works one can easily connect to our HUM 111 class and book. Since HUM 111 covers from ancient times to the 1500s AD, it makes more sense to focus on items from that time frame. In general, museums with artistic cultural artifacts and fine arts work better than history museums.
Any questions about whether a museum-visit activity fits the course and assignment well enough will be decided by the instructor when the student seeks approval for the activity. Any alternative activity outside the normal ones listed here, such as for those limited by disability or distance, will be determined by the instructor. Generally, we do not expect students to travel over an hour to get to an approved activity.
Take notes as you go through the museum and accept any handouts or pamphlets that the museum staff gives you. While you should not quote anything from the printed material when you do your report, the handouts may help to refresh your memory later.
The quality of your experience is not measured by the amount of time you spend in the galleries or the number of works of art that you actually see. The most rewarding experiences can come from finding two (2) or three (3) pieces of art or exhibits which intrigue you and then consi.

A museum exhibition consists of a carefully selected group of art objects that illuminates a specific artistic, cultural, or historical theme. It can explore the development of a single artist’s work (e.g. “The Prints of Albrecht Dürer”), reveal a range of artistic activity from a given time and place (e.g. “High Renaissance Artists in Rome under Pope Julius II”), or chart the depiction of a certain subject throughout history (e.g. “Images of War in the 20th Century”). Much like an academic paper, an effective exhibition makes an argument, using works of art as evidence for its thesis. Furthermore, an exhibition creates meaning through the arrangement of works of art in space. By sequencing works in a certain way, the exhibition’s organizer, or curator, structures the viewer’s understanding of the its subject.
This assignment asks you to create your own art exhibition devoted to a topic of your choosing, consisting of at least four works of art. Unlike your museum paper, this paper does require library research. Your final paper should have the following format:
I. Introductory paragraph: Introduce your reader to your exhibition’s topic. Describe its historical significance (in other words, why was this exhibition worth organizing? what can be learned from seeing it?) and state your thesis.
II. Checklist: Write at least two paragraphs for each work of art in your exhibition. Five Simple Steps
I. Select the two works of art from European culture during the time period covered by this course from two different categories:
· Visual art, including sculpture, mosaics, painting, architecture, and other forms
· Literature, including poetry, a play, fiction, and other forms
· Music in what we think of as the Classical tradition (not popular or folk songs), including forms such as the suite, oratorio, mass, motet, opera, formal dance or ballet music, chorale, and so forth. Some of these works are lengthy, so you may listen to and write about a section or movement of a longer work if you choose. For example, rather than write about Handel’s entire three-hour oratorio, The Messiah, you could write about one section such as the aria, “I know that my Redeemer liveth.”
Example: In your paper, you may want to write about a sculpture (i.e., visual art) by the Classical Greek sculptor Praxiteles and a magnifcat, a choral religious work (i.e., music), by the Italian Renaissance composer Palestrina. II. Craft an introduction that gives your reader the WHAT and the WHY.
a) What! What are you comparing? What are you contrasting? Your introduction will include information about both works,indicating as fully as possible the following:

3. Period/date
4. Location or origin
5. Medium and/or size
b) Why! Why are you comparing the works?Here is where you state the “agenda,” main idea, or reason you are comparing these works. Remember, this is your response to these works. Ask yourself the following kinds of questions: What does each work represent from its time period? What elements illustrate that this work is from that time period? What does it symbolize or represent?
III. Include a brief background.
In the body of your paper, as you compare and contrast the works, provide the vital background information that is crucial for your reader in understanding the two works, which include your own personal observations, thoughts, and reflections on both works.
IV. Compare and Contrast the Works
· Discuss similarities between the two works by pointing out what they have in common in the body of your paper. This may be challenging, since we are not used to comparing, say, music with art, or architecture with poetry. But see where your ideas and imagination take you!
· Discuss differences between the two works in the body of your paper using words such as “unlike,” “whereas,” and so on. What about the two works strikes you as decidedly different? Not just the form; of course, music is different from a painting!

The Eastern (Asian) landscape tradition is markedly different from that of the Western (European). Traditional Asian artists intended to evoke meditative contemplation through visual imagery using atmospheric perspective, placement, and asymmetry. Eastern works also stress a reverence for nature and often include calligraphy or poetry as part of the primary subject. What ideas do European landscapes of the same time period convey?

Visiting a Museum
It makes sense to approach a museum the way a seasoned traveler approaches visiting a city for the first time. Find out what there is available to see. In the museum, find out what sort of exhibitions are currently housed in the museum and start with the exhibits that interest you.
If there is a travelling exhibition, it’s always a good idea to see it while you have the chance. Then, if you have time, you can look at other things in the museum.
Every effort should be made ahead of time to identify a museum that has items and works one can easily connect to our HUM 111 class and book. Since HUM 111 covers from ancient times to the 1500s AD, it makes more sense to focus on items from that time frame. In general, museums with artistic cultural artifacts and fine arts work better than history museums.
Any questions about whether a museum-visit activity fits the course and assignment well enough will be decided by the instructor when the student seeks approval for the activity. works of art. This type of essay usually requires a substantial comparative judgment of the two works, which will function as your thesis statement.
One option for a thesis statement for this kind of comparative essay could be based on how you see the two works in relation to each other and to some aspect of the human condition, or culture, or history. It could be, for example, that both artists painted peasants working in a field, but one painting suggests the oneness of humans and nature, perhaps because the figures appear to be an integral part of the field in which they are working, while the other painting emphasizes the separation between humans and nature. The evidence you provide for your thesis will include your interpretation, analysis, and description of the characteristics of both works, and must at all times relate to your thesis. For example, if you are discussing horizontality or verticality, you need to first accurately and clearly describe these elements in both works and then evaluate how these visual orientations demonstrate the validity of your thesis concerning humans as a part of nature or separate from it.

The Eastern (Asian) landscape tradition is markedly different from that of the Western (European). Traditional Asian artists intended to evoke meditative contemplation through visual imagery using atmospheric perspective, placement, and asymmetry. Eastern works also stress a reverence for nature and often include calligraphy or poetry as part of the primary subject. What ideas do European landscapes of the same time period convey?

Visiting a Museum
It makes sense to approach a museum the way a seasoned traveler approaches visiting a city for the first time. Find out what there is available to see. In the museum, find out what sort of exhibitions are currently housed in the museum and start with the exhibits that interest you.
If there is a travelling exhibition, it’s always a good idea to see it while you have the chance. Then, if you have time, you can look at other things in the museum.
Every effort should be made ahead of time to identify a museum that has items and works one can easily connect to our HUM 111 class and book. Since HUM 111 covers from ancient times to the 1500s AD, it makes more sense to focus on items from that time frame. In general, museums with artistic cultural artifacts and fine arts work better than history museums.

The temple and the sanctuary around were dedicated to Asklepios Zmidrenus. This name has been known since 1875 when an inscription dedicated to him was discovered in Rome. The inscription is dated in 227 AD and was left by soldiers originating from the city of Philippopolis (modern Plovdiv).

This activism has led to the cessation of student encampments but also highlighted the substantial sacrifices made by students, including academic disruptions and personal risks. The primary drivers of these protests are poor university administration, lack of transparency, and inadequate communication between officials and students. This study examines the profound emotional, psychological, and professional impacts on students engaged in pro-Palestine protests, focusing on Generation Z's (Gen-Z) activism dynamics. This paper explores the significant sacrifices made by these students and even the professors supporting the pro-Palestine movement, with a focus on recent global movements. Through an in-depth analysis of printed and electronic media, the study examines the impacts of these sacrifices on the academic and personal lives of those involved. The paper highlights examples from various universities, demonstrating student activism's long-term and short-term effects, including disciplinary actions, social backlash, and career implications. The researchers also explore the broader implications of student sacrifices. The findings reveal that these sacrifices are driven by a profound commitment to justice and human rights, and are influenced by the increasing availability of information, peer interactions, and personal convictions. The study also discusses the broader implications of this activism, comparing it to historical precedents and assessing its potential to influence policy and public opinion. The emotional and psychological toll on student activists is significant, but their sense of purpose and community support mitigates some of these challenges. - 1. For this assignment, students are asked to imagine themselves as a curator of Ancient or Medieval Art (prehistory to ca. 1300 CE). In this role, you will select five (5) artworks that fit a selected theme and propose an exhibition of those artworks. Your exhibition may compare works across time and cultures, but a good curatorial thesis will remain focused and narrow in its scope (for instance, comparing the idealized male form in Egypt, Greece, and Rome would be too much for this project. But looking at Archaic Greece in comparison to Classical Greece is appropriate). Themes may be cultural, stylistic, or even based in a discussion of material – any uncertainty should be discussed with your instructor. This assignment requires scholarly research. The written component of this project should be 500-750 words, or 2-3 pages, in length. Please limit your papers to 3 pages; a too-long paper needs more assertive revision to clarify the main thesis and supporting arguments. Use 11.5 or 12-point font, preferably Times. Double space your text and use 1” margins. Number each page starting on page 2. No cover page is necessary. In the top right corner of the first page include your last name, date, and section number single spaced . Proofread your paper before submission. PART ONE: CURATORIAL THESIS STATEMENT (60% of grade) The Big Idea A successful exhibition tells a good story and facilitates a productive encounter between the objects displayed and the
- 2. viewer. Your exhibition should help the audience engage with the ancient and medieval art world in an interesting and coherent way. How you select, juxtapose, and describe your objects will frame the argument you make in your exhibition. Museum professionals use a curatorial thesis to communicate their vision when they plan and execute exhibitions. A curatorial thesis is a statement of what an exhibition is about. Topics are incomplete thoughts; the thesis tells you why the topic is important and what it explains about the world. Write a brief curatorial argument (500-750 words) to introduce the thesis of your exhibition. A good introductory essay presents the objects in your exhibition in historical context. Your essay should address a central theme/question/problem: for example, if your exhibition treats aspects of the funerary arts in ancient Egypt, you might first introduce your selected artworks generally as artistic and cultural artifacts. Then you should contextualize those objects: how were the objects created, viewed or used? The challenge of an introductory essay is to remain specific, that is, focused on the objects as unique, material, historical and original artworks. Yet your introductory essay should also examine the broader social, political, and/or economic significance of the artworks. In a sense, your essay must restore to the artworks the original context that the museum environment often lacks. The more vivid and detailed your essay, the more your reader will understand how artworks interacted with their social contexts. Finally, your essay must address the specific critical problem/question posed by the exhibition. You may need supporting maps, diagrams, drawings, or works of art to make your exhibition interesting, educational, and informative. Please note, a thesis is not the same as a theme. Your theme may be something general (i.e., Egyptian sarcophagi) but your thesis should be much more focused - what specifically are you
- 3. trying to communicate about that theme? Curatorial statements without a clear, one-sentence thesis in the introductory paragraph will be penalized one letter grade (10 points). PART TWO: OBJECTS FOR EXHIBITION (20% of grade; 4 points per image) Over the course of the semester, you have encountered a large and diverse collection of ancient art objects. Make a list of five (5) objects you plan to include in your exhibition. Keep in mind that you will be responsible for briefly interpreting each object as it relates to your curatorial thesis; the selected objects are your support/evidence. Your images, along with complete identification information [title, creator- if known, date, dimensions, and materials (one point per item)] and current location should be submitted as an appendix to the Curatorial Introduction. Remember: Your exhibition must be able to stand on its own. Viewers should be able to work out the connection between objects independently of any words. Do not simply illustrate an argument. A bibliography including a minimum of five (5) peer-reviewed, scholarly sources related to your Curatorial Thesis ( not specific artworks) should be included with your final submission. Bibliographies may be formatted in the manual of style you are most comfortable with (Chicago, MLA, APA), but you must be consistent. Please note textbooks, encyclopedias, blogs, museum websites, videos, etc. are NOT peer-reviewed, scholarly resources and will not be accepted.
