1. Vocational College Lappia made CLT-elements for new
football grandstand
The students at the Vocational College Lappia made building elements to the new football
stand in Kemi according to 3D-plans. The CLT-grandstand is a magnificent part of the home
stadium of PS Kemi football team playing at Finnish champion league.
The overall dimensions of the stand are 70 by 14 meter, the maximum height is 10 meter
and amount of used CLT parts is 832. There are a total of 1100 seats in 10 rows.
The most visible construction of the grandstand are made of CLT-panels, which were
completed by other support components like nail plate structures. The primary roof pillars
of the stadium are composite structures in which the core parts are made of glued wood
beams and the visible parts of CLT-panels. All structures of the stand have been made
entirely by the students and the teachers of Lappia. The traditional key advantages of
prefabricated components are speed, efficiency and precise tolerances. All of these
advantages were realized in grandstand erection, which was carried out in a few weeks.
Football grandstand of Kemi is an important pilot project in wood processing and building
technology. Now, all this new knowledge of CLT manufacturing and assembling can be used
in practice for planning and implementing education.
