The 16th summer of Texas High School 7-on-7 football starts this week with Cy Creek and Manvel
hosting 16-team events where the top two finishers earn state tournament berths.
Eight of the 10 Cy-Fair ISD/District 17-5A teams will compete at Cy Creek (Cy Ranch and Cy Ridge
2. will not), and this marks the seventh year of two 7-on-7 divisions featuring Class 5A and 4A schools
in Division I, and 3A, 2A and A teams in Division II.
The 7-on-7 state tournament, set for July 11-13, has a new home in Leander at Southwest Williamson
County Regional Park. Many schedules list state in Round Rock, but the park is just northwest of
Round Rock and has a Leander address (3005 County Road 175, zip 78641).
Former 7-on-7 state tournament host Texas AM University had to say no due to NCAA and SEC
rules, and the College Station business community is not thrilled. There was an attempt to move to
Veteran's Park and Athletic Complex in College Station, but at least for this year, traffic logistics
would be a nightmare, according to state 7-on-7 officials, so it's off to Leander.
Cy Creek and Manvel host season-opening SQTs on Saturday, May 25, with pool games at 9, 10 and
11 a.m., semifinals at 1 p.m., and championship/consolation contests at 2 p.m.
The top two finishers at all 32 SQTs qualify for state.
Cy Creek's SQT 16-team lineup features the host Cougars with Cinco Ranch, Atascocita and AM
Consolidated in Pool A; Cy-Fair, Cy Falls, Cy Lakes and Langham Creek in Pool B; Cy Springs Strake
Jesuit, Stratford and Terry in Pool C; and Jersey Village, Tomball, The Woodlands and Cy Woods in
Pool D.
"We feel like we have an outstanding field once again this year and we're looking forward to a great
tournament on Saturday," Cy Creek head coach Greg McCaig said. "It's really incredible how 7-on-7
has grown from such humble beginnings, and now, communities across the state want to host 7-on-7
events because it brings a lot of people and business to town."
McCaig has worked closely with 7-on-7 for more than a decade and is on the 2013 state board of
directors that also includes Cinco Ranch coach Don Clayton, Terry's Tim Teykl and Westbury
Christian's Mike Sneed.
At Manvel's SQT it's Friendswood, Clear Creek, Dawson and Elkins in Pool A; Lamar, Clear Springs,
Pearland and Fort Bend Ridge Point in Pool B; Manvel, Baytown Lee, Pasadena Memorial and Clear
Lake in Pool C; and Alvin, Willis, Spring Branch Memorial and Dulles in Pool D.
The host Mavericks fell to Plano 45-28 in last year's 7-on-7 Division I state finals.
There are other season-opening SQTs in Round Rock and Colleyville on Saturday, and next week
(June 1), Terry, Austin Lake Travis, Frisco and Mesquite host events.
It's even busier the following week (June 8) with SQTs at The Woodlands, College Station, Lufkin,
Corpus Christi, Plano, Southlake Carroll and Belton.
The Houston Texans decided against hosting season-opening 7-on-7 tournaments this summer, and
taking the place of those SQTs are the July 6-7 CES Performance tournaments hosted by the
Houston Dynamo at their practice facility at Houston Amateur Sports Park (12131 Kirby Dr., just
west of Hwy. 288).
