Football, also known as soccer, is a sport played between two teams of 11 players using a spherical ball. It is played by 250 million players worldwide, making it the most popular sport globally. The objective is to score by getting the ball into the opposing goal using any body part except the arms or hands. The modern history of football began in 1863 in England when the Football Association was formed as the first governing body, splitting rugby football and association football into separate codes. People have been kicking balls for thousands of years, with some of the earliest evidence of football-like games dating back to ancient China and versions played in ancient Greece and Rome.
