The Korean War began in 1950 when North Korea invaded South Korea, leading the United Nations to intervene on South Korea's behalf at the request of the U.S. The war escalated over three years as China and the U.S. became involved on opposing sides, with extensive bombing campaigns and fighting resulting in a stalemate. An armistice in 1953 reestablished the division between North and South Korea near the original border at the 38th parallel.
Education alone does not determine success in life. While classroom knowledge is important, other qualities like street smarts, common sense, and an ability to please crowds and adapt to different situations also contribute to being successful. Some highly successful people like Steve Jobs, Manny Pacquiao, and Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo may not have high levels of formal education but demonstrate qualities like street smarts and a drive to survive that have led to their achievements.
Chapter 31 the modern civil rights movement, social critics, and nonconformistsslittrell1
The document discusses key events and figures of the modern Civil Rights Movement from the 1950s-1960s. It covers Martin Luther King Jr.'s leadership in the Montgomery Bus Boycott and his influential speeches. It also discusses the Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court ruling, Little Rock school integration crisis, McCarthyism and blacklisting in Hollywood, Betty Friedan's feminist work, and the rise of the counterculture movement challenging social norms.
The document summarizes the context of the Cold War and key events related to McCarthyism in the United States during the 1950s. It describes the formation of NATO and the Warsaw Pact following WWII, communist expansion in China, suspected Soviet spies like the Rosenbergs, and the investigations led by Senator Joseph McCarthy targeting communist influence in the government. It also discusses opposition to McCarthyism from figures like Edward R. Murrow and the Army hearings that ultimately led to McCarthy's censure.
While education provides knowledge, it does not guarantee success in life. Street smarts, including pleasing crowds, maximizing talents, maintaining morals, and using common sense, may be more important for success. The document cites statistics showing high unemployment among educated Filipinos and asserts that lack of street smarts caused the downfall of some notable individuals, implying that education alone is insufficient without also developing practical life skills.
