This document is a research proposal that examines how the space of restaurants affects social behavior. The student proposes to study high-end and low-end restaurants in Bangsar Village, Malaysia to observe differences in customer behavior. The objective is to understand how space influences social behavior in order to improve future design concepts. Methods will include interviews, observations, and video recordings of customers in various restaurants to analyze how they eat, sit, dress and interact based on the restaurant's class and space. The findings could provide insights for designing spaces that accurately account for how social behavior is affected.

3. Proposal for
“The effects of different spaces have on social behavior.”

Bangsar Village was built in over a decade ago, located in
the heart of hip and happening Bangsar. This particular area is
popular with locals and the expat community. Bangsar Village has
many specialty shops (more than seventy shops)selected to
provide for everyday needs. So this is the site that I am going to
use for my research proposal.It is because,it has so many
differenttypes of shops and the classes betweenthem can be
classified as low-class, medium-class and high-class.
Now, time to define social behavior. Behavior comes in many
forms,but why they behave this way is the question. One of the
answers is by the environment around them, places and interiors,
that’s where I’m looking further into it. I find it interesting how
differentpeople react to differentsetting and the layouts of the
various eateries in the area. For example, they may be behaving
differentlyin a high class restaurant than to a low class restaurant,
but that is just my assumptionthat is why I’m doing this to find out
the way people react to differentspaces and why they react this
way. I believe by understanding the relationship betweenspaces
and social behavior more will help me towards improving design
and concepts in future projects.In order to achieve this, I have to
observe and obtain information through various sources of the
premises.
Through my video recording,I will observe the social
behavior of the people in the restaurants by exploring the answers
to my further questions such as the how do they eat, sit, dress and
more. I also plan to interview several workers and customers and
maybe shop owners.
