In 1991, Linus Torvalds posted a message asking for suggestions on what people would like to see in his hobbyist operating system for Intel 386 computers, which he was developing as an alternative to MINIX and would later be called Linux. This message marked the beginning of Linux development as an open source operating system that would later see widespread adoption in universities, businesses, and public administrations over the next 20 years.
