Why is Virtualization Creating Storage Sprawl? By Storage SwitzerlandINFINIDAT
Desktop and server virtualization have brought many benefits to the data center. These two initiatives have allowed IT to respond quickly to the needs of the organization while driving down IT costs, physical footprint requirements and energy demands. But there is one area of the data center that has actually increased in cost since virtualization started to make its way into production… storage. Because of virtualization, more data centers need "ash to meet the random I/O nature of the virtualized environment, which of course is more expensive, on a dollar per GB basis, than hard disk drives. The single biggest problem however is the signi!cant increase in the number of discrete storage systems that service the environment. This “storage sprawl” threatens the return on investment (ROI) of virtualization projects and makes storage more complex to manage.

Webinar: What's Best for VDI, Hybrid or All-Flash Storage?Storage Switzerland
The top concern for IT planners looking to implement or expand the use of their VDI investment is storage performance. This is because every step that is taken to drive down cost per desktop, or improve the user experience, impacts storage performance and capacity. All-flash arrays address the performance problem with a sledgehammer and for many environments they can be the most cost effective option. But for others, hybrid solutions may make more sense.
Join Storage Switzerland and Tegile Systems as we discuss the various challenges that VDI scale brings to storage and how All-Flash Arrays and Hybrid Arrays can address those challenges.
One of the toughest decisions when selecting a new storage system is deciding between an All-Flash Array and a Hybrid Array. Do you go with the predictable high performance of the all flash architecture or the attractive price per GB of the mixed flash and hard disk architecture? What if you can have both? In this webinar learn how to get predictable performance from your Hybrid Arrays so it will perform like an All-Flash Array.

Enterprise Storage Solutions for Overcoming Big Data and Analytics ChallengesINFINIDAT
Big Data and analytics workloads represent a new frontier for organizations. Data is being collected from sources that did not exist 10 years ago. Mobile phone data, machine-generated data, and website interaction data are all being collected and analyzed. In addition, as IT budgets are already being pressured down, Big Data footprints are getting larger and posing a huge storage challenge.
This paper provides information on the issues that Big Data applications pose for storage systems and how choosing the correct storage infrastructure can streamline and consolidate Big Data and analytics applications without breaking the bank.
InfiniBox bridges the gap between high performance and high capacity for Big Data applications. InfiniBox allows an organization implementing Big Data and Analytics projects to truly attain its business goals: cost reduction, continual and deep capacity scaling, and simple and effective management — and without any compromises in performance or reliability. All of this to effectively and efficiently support Big Data applications at a disruptive price point.

In this webinar join experts from Storage Switzerland and Tegile to discover if the All-Flash Data Center can become reality. We will explore the return on investment that All-Flash systems can deliver, like increase user and virtual machine densities, lower drive counts and simpler storage architectures. We will also look at some of the methods that All-Flash systems employ to deliver an acceptable cost per GB like thin provisioning, clones, deduplication and compression. Finally we will take one last look at disk, does it have a role in the All-Flash Data Center and if it does what should that role be?

workflows
Around the world, organizations are struggling to manage the explosive
growth of data—often while working within a shrinking IT budget.
Today’s high performance computing, big-data and cloud applications
are driving new demands for storage access. At the same time, business
leaders need fast storage performance for real-time analytics, so they can
turn data insights into a competitive advantage. However, it does not
make economic sense to meet all of these needs with traditional storage
solutions, which can be costly to administer, challenging to scale and
still result in data access bottlenecks.
By pairing IBM® FlashSystem™ storage systems with code-named
Elastic Storage1 software, organizations can derive rapid value from their
ever-growing volumes of data. These two complementary solutions
deliver extreme performance for the most compute-intensive applications,
helping remove both storage and data access bottlenecks. Plus, as storage
capacity grows, existing staff can easily administer it. Fully automated data
lifecycle management—including the tiering of data through less expen-
sive storage pools such as tape—means that organizations can reduce the
costs of managing petabytes of data and billions of files while improving
security and IT efficiency on a global scale.
2. 2
Harness the power of big data
Together, Elastic Storage and FlashSystem can help ensure
that critical applications operate with high availability and
peak performance. Elastic Storage is a proven, scalable,
high-performance data and file management solution used
extensively across multiple industries worldwide. FlashSystem
storage arrays are data center-optimized to deliver extreme per-
formance, reliability, and low latency in the most demanding
environments.
Based on IBM General Parallel File System (GPFS™) technol-
ogy, Elastic Storage removes data-related bottlenecks by
providing fast access to local copies of data, while synchronizing
data stores located around the world. It can share virtualized
storage pools with practically limitless file system scaling.
Built-in intelligent resource utilization enables optimized
placement of data on persistent storage options—flash, spin-
ning disk or tape—based on desired attributes. Elastic Storage
also provides integrated information lifecycle management tools
to help reduce the ongoing costs of storage.
Meanwhile, FlashSystem removes storage bottlenecks with
IBM MicroLatency™ for fast access—achieving as low as
135-microsecond response times. This low-latency design
improves server efficiency, lowering software licensing costs
and maximizing the use of existing resources. In addition, by
virtually eliminating wait times and enabling more transactions
to occur, FlashSystem can help applications scale to support
more concurrent users, helping to improve productivity and
increase revenue.
Extend the synergy of FlashSystem and
Elastic Storage
Integrated deployments of Elastic Storage and FlashSystem
are enabling organizations to cost-effectively move away from
traditional disk storage solutions. Three key use cases have
emerged:
●● ●
Using FlashSystem as a primary storage device under
Elastic Storage
●● ●
Using FlashSystem to accelerate Elastic Storage metadata
●● ●
Using FlashSystem as a storage tier dynamically managed by
Elastic Storage
FlashSystem as a storage device
Extremely fast, low-latency, high-bandwidth FlashSystem
storage arrays are now certified for Elastic Storage. FlashSystem
provides the speed of internal flash, but with the flexibility and
infrastructure of traditional shared storage solutions. Together,
FlashSystem and Elastic Storage can support millions of
transactions without bottlenecks.
FlashSystem for metadata acceleration
Using FlashSystem to accelerate metadata—that is, as a separate
storage tier for metadata—organizations can dramatically
improve the performance of primary data workloads across
Elastic Storage environments. Thanks to FlashSystem storage,
metadata small-block input/output (I/O) operations no longer
interfere with the large streaming access operations of the
primary workloads. In fact, compute tasks such as batch
processing and nightly backups have been significantly
shortened by moving metadata stores to FlashSystem storage.
3. 3
FlashSystem as a storage tier
When using Elastic Storage to create tiers of storage based on
performance or other characteristics, FlashSystem can be used
as a high-performance, flash-accelerated tier that helps improve
the performance of the overall infrastructure. This can help
ensure optimal placement of data and eliminate wasted capacity
previously needed for performance. When data is placed in or
moved between storage pools, all of the data management is
done automatically by Elastic Storage.
