BIRR is referred to the impact of impervious areas on the distribution of water after rainfall. The area, type, and texture of various impervious areas like buildings, pavements, roads, etc. do not allow rainfall to infiltrate the soil cover and enforced the water droplets to flow off the watershed as runoff. The impact of buildings on rainfall redistribution and its effect on water availability can yield interesting and useful research proposals. Five such promising topics are shared here.

BIRR is referred as the impact of impervious areas on the distribution of water after rainfall.
The area, type and texture of various impervious areas like buildings, pavements, roads etc.
does not allow rainfall to infiltrate the soil cover and enforced the water droplets to flow off
the watershed as runoff. The impact of buildings on the rainfall redistribution and its effect
on the water availability can yield interesting and useful research proposals. Five of which are
listed below
List of Most Promising Topics
Impact of BIRR on flood forecasting models
Impact of BIRR on hydrologic response
Impact of BIRR on desertification
Impact of BIRR on water quality
Impact of BIRR on watershed vulnerability
Impact of BIRR on flood forecasting models
Microtopography due to the building roofs and rainfall redistribution due to the same has significant effect on
urban hydrology and as a result it also influences the accuracy of flood forecasting models. The impervious area
in a water shed prevent infiltration and increases peak flood and decreases time to peak. However, quantification
of the impact is still not attempted.

Impact of BIRR on hydrologic response
The way a catchment reacts when it is subjected to a rainfall event is called hydrological response. The response
depends along with many other factors, physical properties of the catchment (soil nature, vegetal coverage), and
previous soil humidity state both of which can be modified by the buildings, pavements etc. infrastructures which
makes a watershed impervious and can redistribute rainfall. But quantification works on the impact of BIRR on
hydrologic response is still rare and much can be done in this area of research.
Desertification is a type of land degradation in drylands in which biological productivity is lost due to natural
processes or induced by human activities whereby fertile areas become increasingly arid. 'Climatic variations' and
'Human activities' can be regarded as the two main causes of desertification. Under human activities, large scale
and rapid urbanization can degrade watershed beyond its capacity of rejuvenation. BIRR can quantify the
urbanization impact on desertification but attempt to identify a relationship has rarely been assayed.
Impact of BIRR on desertification
BIRR also alters the quality of water in the runoff. The surface runoff while traversing the roads, pavements,
buildings etc. available in the catchment, it is subjected to contamination by different organic and inorganic
pollutants. But detection of the change in runoff water quality due to the infrastructures of a watershed has not yet
attempted by any author. However, quantification of the same can prevent health hazards as surface runoff is the
most common source of drinking water,
Impact of BIRR on water quality
A watershed can become vulnerable when its capacity to retain water degrades beyond its capacity to restore.
“From a watershed perspective, it's a function of exposure (physical change in climate), sensitivity (likelihood of
adverse impact given the current or inherent condition), and adaptive capacity (the ability of the ecosystem to
adapt).”In recent years due to the climate change impacts, the pattern of rainfall in many areas of the World has
changed. However due to the lack of knowledge about the interrelationship between the BIRR and resiliency of a
watershed both estimation of vulnerability and restoration of watershed has not yet been ensured.
