The first oil well in Louisiana was drilled in 1901 in Jennings by the Jennings Oil Company. After initially finding only small traces of oil, the well was deepened under the insistence of Scott Heywood. At a depth of 1700 feet, the well struck a large oil reservoir, flowing over 100 feet high. However, the well quickly sanded up and had to be abandoned. Nonetheless, the discovery started an oil boom in the area and changed the history of Louisiana's economy.
