tress affects us mentally,
physically
, and spiritually
. In
a time of crisis, the impulse
is to give in to fear, concern,
and panic, which engenders
soul sickness. The physical
response comes first, and
one tends to go into self-iso-
lation, and social distancing.
The second effect is realized
on our soul, that one experi-
ences personally with sel-
dom answers and advice. In
an event of failure, hopeless-
ness, death, defeat, and vari-
ous happening the soul
reaches its dark pit which
seems invincible. With the
growing materialistic ap-
proach to life, profiling com-
petition at the workplace,
shrinking family dynamics,
falling dialogues among
friends, and unhealthy life-
style, spiritual health is at
increased risk of decay
. How-
ever stressful the situation
and anxiety levels are, the
soul is the most intimate
part of us, and it isn’t found
by running away. Spiritual
well-being is alien to many
people’s daily lives, especial-
ly at the workplace. Millions
of people experience an un-
easy soul, however you want
to define it — the weariness
of heart, existential dread, a
sinking feeling that nothing
really matters, Negative out-
look towards life. — without
finding a way out.
Life forces us to work. We all
have different life lessons, and
while going through those dif-
ficult inner fires at a job there
is no need for the unhealthy
levels of competition and con-
flict that arise from the fear of
the unknown and the crippling
self-doubt that burdens need-
lessly. We should try to create
around us a world of connec-
tion, collaboration, and kind
compassion which involves our
co-workers. We must realize
that everyone and everything
else in the universe is a part of
ourselves. Recent scientific dis-
coveries have revealed that we
are not only deeply connected
to everything in the world
around us but also have unbe-
lievable capacities to outreach
and connect to others.
Fully embracing and un-
derstanding these profound
discoveries will allow one to
fundamentally change his/
her whole relationship to life
and rather than fearing oth-
ers and seeing them as rivals
or adversaries, one becomes
an inspiration to do every-
thing one can to help and
support others and be a part
of their winning journey.
And the truth is, we are a
part of them! Both east and
west have a long tradition of
understanding and examin-
ing spiritual well-being.
These approaches towards
spiritual enlightening give
us a sense of security and
control over our life path
and direction. By bringing
one close to one’s soul, and
increasing higher awareness
or deeper self-understanding
these solutions help us in
various ways and try to re-
verse the damaging effect on
our soul in modern society
.
The best workaround for this
challenge would be by connect-
ing with the immediate com-
munity and adopting relaxa-
tion techniques and attempting
to look around for joy at the
workplace. When we open up,
we realize everyone is experi-
encing stress. Nor is it neces-
sary to enter into metaphysical
speculation about what spirit-
ual awakening is all about.
Spirituality can only be experi-
enced in the fleeting moment.
With increasing competition at
the workplace, one can either
see colleagues as rivals or con-
vert it into an opportunity to
find that common connection
which recent scientific studies
claim that all of us share. A
simple relaxation exercise can
motivate us to perform an act
of kindness or inspire us to
show appreciation to some col-
league for their job, offer help
to those in need, or bring com-
fort to someone feeling lonely
and anxious. These simple hu-
man gestures we tend to over-
look can be overwhelmingly
satisfying and can provide us
with a sense of belongingness
at the workplace and be part of
our work community. Univer-
sal truths do not matter until
they are true for you personal-
ly. The secret imparted by the
world’s wisdom traditions is
that your sense of self, the sim-
ple experience of “I am,” is the
gateway to inner peace and joy
.
Resilience to negativity is
achieved when we ponder to
reflect upon our daily deeds
and there is unbreachable
integration between our ac-
tions and thought. Little
mindfulness about our work
habits or communication
style with colleagues can
prove a great tool for our
spiritual awareness. When
we reflect, we seek a higher
purpose and tend to see be-
yond the mundane pattern
of actions. We achieve peace
with our immediate sur-
roundings and that is the
moment of change. Trusting
this new form of knowledge
takes practice. Over time,
we may find these tips lead-
ing us into new work oppor-
tunities. With this not only
do we achieve an inner bal-
ance but also, we continue to
grow and inspires.

n March 10, the
credit-rating
agency Moody’s
placed Ethiopia
on review for a
downgrade. The problem
isn’t violence and repres-
sion in Ethiopia’s embat-
tled Tigray region. Rather,
Moody’s has concluded
that the Ethiopian govern-
ment’s commitment to en-
gage with private credi-
tors, as part of the G20
Common Framework for
Debt Treatments beyond
the Debt Service Suspen-
sion Initiative, raises the
risk that those creditors
will incur losses. For that,
the country apparently
must be punished.
Whereas the DSSI aims
to provide immediate re-
lief to low-income coun-
tries during the pandemic,
the Common Framework
was designed to help debt-
distressed sovereigns re-
schedule or reduce their
liabilities. For many coun-
tries, it offers the best
chance of making their
debt burdens sustainable.
But now, the threat of rat-
ings downgrades is casting
a shadow over these coun-
tries’ prospects.
This points to a systemic
problem in international
finance: the extraordinary
– and undeserved – power
wielded by a few private
credit-rating agencies. Just
three – Moody’s, SP Glob-
al Ratings, and Fitch Rat-
ings – control more than
94% of outstanding credit
ratings. And there is sig-
nificant cross-sharehold-
ing among them.
These oligopolistic firms
are market movers and
makers, influencing finan-
cial portfolio allocations,
the pricing of debt and
other financial instru-
ments, and the cost of cap-
ital. Bolstering their au-
thority, the US Securities
and Exchange Commission
has recognized them as of-
ficial statistical rating or-
ganizations. And many in-
stitutional investors, re-
quired by law to hold only
“investment-grade” assets
in their portfolios, must
abide by the rating agen-
cies’ verdicts.
Concerns about ratings
agencies were first widely
expressed during the En-
ron scandal in 2001. Enron,
an energy-trading compa-
ny
, had been using account-
ing tricks and complex fi-
nancial instruments to
mislead investors, credi-
tors, and regulators about
its value. The ratings agen-
cies were certainly fooled:
The Big Three all issued
Enron investment-grade
ratings just days before the
company collapsed.
redit-rating agencies
have also been accused of
enabling the United States’
subprime-mortgage bub-
ble, which triggered the
global financial crisis
when it burst in 2008, and
of exacerbating the bust
through rapid reversals
and downgrades. And they
have been known to adjust
ratings in ways that seem
to reflect ideological posi-
tions, such as a commit-
ment to fiscal austerity
.
And yet, as Yuefen Li,
the United Nations Inde-
pendent Expert on Foreign
Debt and Human Rights,
points out in a new report,
ratings agencies face no ac-
countability for their mis-
takes or damaging behav-
ior. Their ratings are le-
gally described as “opin-
ions,” which are protected
under free-speech laws,
and they do not disclose
their methodology. In
short, ratings agencies do
not bear appropriate re-
sponsibility for the enor-
mous power they wield.
Moreover,asLialsonotes,
conflictsof interestabound.
Ratingsagenciesareprivate
businesses, funded largely
bytheinstitutionstheyrate.
And they are players in the
markets they purportedly
assess, meaning that self-
interest inevitably shapes
their decision-making. Rat-
ings agencies have, for ex-
ample, been involved in the
creation of financial prod-
ucts that they were then re-
sponsibleforrating–includ-
ing the mortgage-backed
securities that, flush with
AAA ratings, helped bring
about the 2008 crisis.
And yet, even as regula-
tors work to limit conflicts
of interest among most fi-
nancial-market players,
they seem content to leave
credit-rating agencies to
police themselves. The lack
of regulatory action partly
reflects the lobbying power
of the Big Three. And it is
generating serious risks,
which the coronavirus pan-
demic has intensified.

PSB STAFF WARNS OF
A BIGGER STRUGGLE
fter the indefinite protest by farmers
against the three new farm laws it is now
the turn of employees of nationalised
banks to warn of indefinite strike if the
government presses ahead with its
banks privatization plan. The two-day strike by 10
lakh employees of public sector banks which ended
on Tuesday crippled banking services across the
country but the government is unfazed. Finance
Minister Nirmala Sitharaman was unequivocal
about the privatisation plans which were intended
for “scaling up” of public sector banks and wanted
them to “meet the country’s aspirations”. She also
sought to allay fears of employees saying that their
interests will be protected and they won’t lose their
jobs. Not all PSBs, she said, will be privatised. Like
in the case of farm laws, the government won’t give
its privatization plan a second thought as it expects
to earn Rs 1.75 lakh crore through divestment of
public sector units and banks.
There guessing games are on about which banks
will be put under the hammer and whether indus-
trial houses will be allowed to bid for them. In the
latter case concerns have been raised about conflict
of interests and could lead to lending for the own-
er’s own businesses. Former RBI governor
Raghuram Rajan and deputy governor Viral Acha-
rya raised the red flag, warning of bad lending in
spite of RBI’s proposed strict controls. The RBI in-

A
SECOND COVID WAVE
GRIPS MAHARASHTRA
he second wave of Covid-19 is here, the
Union Health Ministry said in a grim
warning. The warning pertained to Ma-
harashtra which accounted for 15,051
fresh cases out of the total 24, 492 novel
coronavirus cases detected in the country on Mon-
day
. This was close to the peak touched in October
last year. Punjab came next with 1,818 cases. Mon-
day’s death toll stood at 131. The Maharashtra situ-
ation has forced the government to impose full/
partial lockdown in several cities of the State. As
lockdowns, partial or full, cannot be the solution,
a health ministry deployed in the State suggested
implementation of 14 public health measures to
check the virus from spreading. The measures in-
clude a strict containment strategy, proper moni-
toring of home isolation cases and contact tracing.
With the number of active cases in the country
increasingtomorethan2.23lakhandgiventhegrav-
ity of the Covid-19 upsurge, Prime Minister Naren-
dra Modi may address a meeting of chief ministers
today
. Other than the Covid-19 numbers, the prime
minister may possibly also allay fears on adverse
effects Covid-19 vaccines in view of the scare in Eu-
rope over Astrazeneca shot developed by Oxford.
France, Italy
, Spain, Portugal, Slovenia, Denmark,
Iceland, Norway
, Bulgaria and several other coun-
tries halted the use of Astrazeneca. Some countries
said the vaccines caused clotting and “unspecified”
adverse effects. The vaccine is also used in India
under Covishield brand name but there have been
no complaints about its safety
. The World Health
Organisation has insisted that the shot is safe. Is the
scare in Europe more political than real?

it is of the view that the idea

deputy chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh said.
New Delhi: A parliamentary panel has recommended to
the government to consider bringing down juvenile de-

rench-style consist-
ently appeals to so
many of us because
it’s an effortlessly el-
egant vibe that can
make us feel like our
truest selves. It’s all
about ease, and most
women across the At-
lantic don’t care for
throwaway, high
street styles. What
do they care about
is clothing that’s
well-made and ver-
s at i l e — p i e c e s
that read pol-
ished without
trying too hard.
BE EFFORTLESSLY CHIC
The most cardinal of all
French style rules is to ap-
pear effortlessly chic. You
should never look like
you’ve spent more than 30
minutesinfrontof amirror
and that goes for both your
outfit and your make-up!
START WITH THE BASICS
When it comes to dress-
ing, the French go back
to basics. Classic
French style clothing
includes lots of simple de-
signs and neutral colours.
Start by developing a closet
of basics like t-shirts, but-
ton-ups, and simple pants.
Stick to neutral colours
like black, white and nude.
INVEST IN QUALITY
OVER QUANTITY
French girls always invest in
a few pieces of quality
clothing over a large ward-
robe filled with low-cost
items. Start by purging any
low-quality or deteriorat-
ing items of clothing you
own. Replace them with
high-quality pieces you
know will last longer than
one season.
ONE STATEMENT PIECE
PER OUTFIT
Once you have a good closet
of basics and carefully cu-
rated statement pieces, you
can easily put together
many different outfits.
Pick one statement piece
per outfit to add some per-
sonality to your look.

mong all the nuts,
pine nut seems to
be the most exclu-
sive type. Also
known as pignolia
or pignoli nuts, we
usually see it in
our pesto pasta. Yes, it
comes with a high price
tag and that’s probably be-
cause it’s got labour-inten-
sive harvesting process.
In today’s blog, we talk
about its origin, traits,
taste, storage tips, selec-
tion process, allergies,
health benefits, and two
easy recipes that can be
made under 10 minutes!
Scroll down:
NAME
Botanically, pine trees be-
long to the family of
Pinaceae and the Pinus ge-
nus. Some of the common
names are pinon nuts,
pignoli, cedar nuts, chilgo-
za, pinyon pinenuts, etc. A
great number of species of
the genus Pinus produce
edible seeds.
ORIGIN
These come from the pine
trees. Pine cones, specifi-
cally. Interestingly, these
aren’t nuts but seeds that
are found inside these
cones. Usually, it takes
about 1.5 years for them to
be ready, and, hence the
price! Also, because they
come covered in a thick
shell that needs to be bro-
ken before they’re sold in
the market, the extra la-
bour adds to the final cost
which the consumer bears.
The pine trees are com-
mon in China, Russia,
Mongolia, Korea, and Af-
ghanistan. While Europe
is a large consumer and
producer of pine nuts as
well, Italy is where this nut
is extensively used in the
preparation of traditional
basil pesto.
Did you know the “flow-
ers” of the pine tree even-
tually become the cone?
The female cones take
about two–three years to
mature after pollination.
While at it, the female
cones (ovulate or seed
cones) may become any-
thing between 3 cm to 35
cm. Once the scaly cone
matures, it splits open nat-
urally to release the kernel
– the pine nut!
FEATURES
Pine nuts have a dark-
brown outer shell that’s
very hard in nature. Inside
it, the edible kernel is
formed that is off-white in
colour and relatively sweet
in taste.
TASTE
They have a cashew-like
texture and the flavour is
quite similar to any other
nut like walnut and pea-
nut. Because of their rich
texture, they are a great
add on to any dip, sauce
and cream.
THE INDIAN PINE NUTS
These grow in the Him-
alayan region
like Himachal
P r a d e s h ,
K a s h m i r
and Uttra-
khand. This
variety is
known as
Chilgoza pine
nut (Pinus gerard-
iana) and are long and
slender in shape with
pointed ends.
ALLERGIES
Some people suffer from
‘pine nut mouth’ or ‘pine
nut syn-
drome,’ in which eating
pine nuts give a metallic,
bitter taste on the taste
buds. Some studies have
shown that this syndrome
only happens on consum-
ing specific species of
pine trees found in China.
In some rare cases, pine
nut allergy can cause
itchy skin, breathing dif-
ficulty, abdomen pain and
vomiting.
BUYING AND STORAGE
While buying unshelled
nuts, look for dark brown
colour, uniformity among
the nuts, spot-free and
crack-free nuts and feel the
weight when you put them
on your palms. While buy-
ing shelled kernels, check
for uniformity in all the
nuts and always buy from
an authentic source. To
store, use an air-tight jar
so that no humidity can
mess with the nuts. You
can either store them in
the refrigerator or keep at
a cold place. Their shelf-
life is long if well taken
care of. Just like stale al-
monds, if you notice a pun-
gent smell, oily surface
and a bitter taste in your
pine nuts, it’s better to dis-
card them.
USAGE
Pine nuts can be used in a
number of baked items,
soups, pasta, dressings,
dips, salads and also
smoothie bowls. Their
combined creamy and
crunchy texture is
what makes them a
top choice of chefs
around the world.
It’s, however, sug-
gested to roast
these nuts a little
before using them in
your recipes to bring
out the extra flavour. All
you need to do is just fry
them on a pan with/with-
out any grease.
HEALTH BENEFITS
1Pine nuts, like other
nuts, are high in calo-
ries. 100 g of dry kernels
contain 673 calories, which
is monounsaturated fats,
iron and magnesium.
2They can promote
health as they’re rich
in phytochemicals, vita-
mins, antioxidants, and
minerals.
3Pine nuts are rich in
vitamin E, zinc, fibre,
and protein. Vitamin E
contains antioxidants that
protect the skin from
harmful free radicals.
4They’re rich in mono-
unsaturated fatty acids
like oleic acid (18:1 undif-
ferentiated fat) that con-
trol LDL or “bad choles-
terol” and increases HDL
or “good cholesterol” in
our blood.
5People on diet are often
asked to snack on pine
nuts as they contain essen-
tial fatty acid (the omega-6
fat), pinolenic acid. These
nuts have the potential to
curb one’s appetite, as the
pinolenicacidhelpsrelease
the hunger-suppressant en-
zymes called cholecysto-
kinin and Glucagon-like
peptide-1(GLP-1)inthegut.
6Pine nuts are an excel-
lent source of Vitamin
B-complex group, such as
thiamin, riboflavin, nia-
cin, pantothenic acid, vita-
min B-6 (pyridoxine) and
folates. These vitamins
help in cellular substrate
metabolism.
7Among all the nuts and
seeds, pine nuts are one
of the most powerful
source of manganese,
which helps our body de-
velop resistance against
infectious agents and
harmful free radicals.

The Speaker asked BJP MLAs to give facts in support of their claim and said he will forward the facts to the government, who will give a reply today itself. —With PTI inputs BJP MLAs form chain to stop Dilawar being escorted out First India Bureau Jaipur: BJP MLA Madan Dilawar was suspended from the Assembly after he ap- proached and inter- rupted Independent MLA Sanyam Lodha, who was speaking on demands for grants for education, art and culture. Lodha object- ed to Dilawar’s behav- iour, following which Speaker CP Joshi warned Dilawar who did not pay any heed, Joshi asked Parlia- mentary Affairs Min- ister Shanti Dhariwal to bring a proposal. Dhariwal moved a proposal to suspend Dilawar from the House for seven days which was passed by voice vote. BJP wants to expose GS Shekhawat via phone tapping row: Dotasra First India Bureau Jaipur: Hitting back at the opposition BJP over the issue of phone tap- ping controversy, PCC president Govind Singh Dotasra on Tuesday said that a section of lo- cal BJP leaders want to expose Union minister GajendraSinghShekha- wat who had played a role in efforts to topple the Congress govern- ment in Rajasthan. He said that the local leaders want to expose him in order to prevent him from being a con- tender for the post of CM. “It was asked in the Assembly whether phone tapping happens. Along with this, the pro- cess was asked and the reply to the question was given. Phone tap- ping used to take place earlier and it happens even today. And if the need arises, it will con- tinue to happen (as per the provisions of the law),” he told reporters. Transport minister Pratap Singh Khachari- yawas said that phones of none of the ministers or MLAs were tapped. “BJP does not have any relevant issue hence they are running be- hind this point,” he said. Chief Whip Dr. Mahesh Joshi and Dep- uty whip Mahendra Choudhary said that the allegations of violation of privacy of the opposi- tion are completely baseless. “If Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shek- hawat gives his voice sample, the truth will be revealed. Shekhawat should explain how the audio came out,” Ma- hesh Joshi said. Govind Singh Dotasra Infants died in Kota of diseases, no one guilty: Dr Raghu Stalemate over phone-tapping ends as Speaker to allow debate First India Bureau Jaipur: Health min- ister Raghu Sharma on Tuesday said that no doctor or official was found guilty of carelessness in the inquiry in the deaths of infants in Kota’s government hospi- tal. Replying to a question asked by BJP MLA Vasudev Devnani, the minis- ter said that the re- port of the commit- teewhichwasformed to probe the matter has been submitted and no doctor or of- ficial was responsi- ble for the deaths. He said that the in- fants died due to dis- eases and there should be no politics on the deaths of in- fants. The minister, who appeared well pre- pared for replies, in- formed the house that 1,060 deaths were reported in Ajmer district in 2017, 1,276 in 2018, 1,200 in 2019, and 939 deaths in 2020. In Kota district, 852 deaths were re- ported in 2107, 881 in 2018 and reduced to 837 in 2019 and 717 in 2020. “This clearly shows that there is a steady decline in the number of deaths due to efficient man- agement,” he said. First India Bureau Jaipur: The dharna by BJP members that oc- curred in the Rajasthan Assembly on Tuesday over phone tapping row ended in the night after Assembly Speaker Dr CP Joshi assured the agitating BJP MLAs of holding debate on the topic in the House. Moreover, the Speak- er has also allowed MLA Madan Dilawar to reach till the lobby for opposition MLAs giv- ing a minor relief to the MLA during his seven- day long expulsion from the House. A decision on allowing him to en- ter the House will be taken once the proceed- ings resume. “The issue of phone tapping has been ex- tremely crucial since the first day, but the reply to a question asked in August has come now. The govern- ment has not given the answer as was sought but acceptance on phone tapping raises suspicion on the gov- ernment’s approach. We thought it was just and right that the state government should give its answer on the issue and that too at a time when open debate can be held on it. We raised this demand and when the Speaker rejected it, a situation of no-pass occurred. The matter was raised in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday and will be raised in Rajya Sabha on Wednesday,” BJP state chief Satish Poo- nia said Education, art and culture grants of `370 billion passed First India Bureau Jaipur: Minister of State for Higher Educa- tion Bhanwar Singh Bhati said in the As- sembly on Tuesday that the state government’s focus on higher educa- tion is mainly on 6 points which include quality of education, ef- fective and strong teaching and service, access to education, re- source systemininstitu- tions, education to stu- dents as well as employ- ment-oriented training and online learning sys- tem. At present, there is no proposal to create new districts. Mean- while, Leader of Oppo- sition Gulabchand Ka- taria raised questions on Revenue Minister Harish Chaudhary’s re- ply and said that it has been three years since the report of the Par- mesh Chand Commit- tee on the creation of new district-subdivi- sion, why does the gov- ernment not take a de- cision on it? Editor: Anita Hada Sangwan responsible for selection of news under the PRB Act tress affects us mentally, physically , and spiritually . In a time of crisis, the impulse is to give in to fear, concern, and panic, which engenders soul sickness. The physical response comes first, and one tends to go into self-iso- lation, and social distancing. The second effect is realized on our soul, that one experi- ences personally with sel- dom answers and advice. In an event of failure, hopeless- ness, death, defeat, and vari- ous happening the soul reaches its dark pit which seems invincible. With the growing materialistic ap- proach to life, profiling com- petition at the workplace, shrinking family dynamics, falling dialogues among friends, and unhealthy life- style, spiritual health is at increased risk of decay . How- ever stressful the situation and anxiety levels are, the soul is the most intimate part of us, and it isn’t found by running away. Spiritual well-being is alien to many people’s daily lives, especial- ly at the workplace. Millions of people experience an un- easy soul, however you want to define it — the weariness of heart, existential dread, a sinking feeling that nothing really matters, Negative out- look towards life. — without finding a way out. Life forces us to work. We all have different life lessons, and while going through those dif- ficult inner fires at a job there is no need for the unhealthy levels of competition and con- flict that arise from the fear of the unknown and the crippling self-doubt that burdens need- lessly. We should try to create around us a world of connec- tion, collaboration, and kind compassion which involves our co-workers. We must realize that everyone and everything else in the universe is a part of ourselves. Recent scientific dis- coveries have revealed that we are not only deeply connected to everything in the world around us but also have unbe- lievable capacities to outreach and connect to others. Fully embracing and un- derstanding these profound discoveries will allow one to fundamentally change his/ her whole relationship to life and rather than fearing oth- ers and seeing them as rivals or adversaries, one becomes an inspiration to do every- thing one can to help and support others and be a part of their winning journey. And the truth is, we are a part of them! Both east and west have a long tradition of understanding and examin- ing spiritual well-being. These approaches towards spiritual enlightening give us a sense of security and control over our life path and direction. By bringing one close to one’s soul, and increasing higher awareness or deeper self-understanding these solutions help us in various ways and try to re- verse the damaging effect on our soul in modern society . The best workaround for this challenge would be by connect- ing with the immediate com- munity and adopting relaxa- tion techniques and attempting to look around for joy at the workplace. When we open up, we realize everyone is experi- encing stress. Nor is it neces- sary to enter into metaphysical speculation about what spirit- ual awakening is all about. Spirituality can only be experi- enced in the fleeting moment. With increasing competition at the workplace, one can either see colleagues as rivals or con- vert it into an opportunity to find that common connection which recent scientific studies claim that all of us share. A simple relaxation exercise can motivate us to perform an act of kindness or inspire us to show appreciation to some col- league for their job, offer help to those in need, or bring com- fort to someone feeling lonely and anxious. These simple hu- man gestures we tend to over- look can be overwhelmingly satisfying and can provide us with a sense of belongingness at the workplace and be part of our work community. Univer- sal truths do not matter until they are true for you personal- ly. The secret imparted by the world’s wisdom traditions is that your sense of self, the sim- ple experience of “I am,” is the gateway to inner peace and joy . Resilience to negativity is achieved when we ponder to reflect upon our daily deeds and there is unbreachable integration between our ac- tions and thought. Little mindfulness about our work habits or communication style with colleagues can prove a great tool for our spiritual awareness. When we reflect, we seek a higher purpose and tend to see be- yond the mundane pattern of actions. We achieve peace with our immediate sur- roundings and that is the moment of change. Trusting this new form of knowledge takes practice. Over time, we may find these tips lead- ing us into new work oppor- tunities. With this not only do we achieve an inner bal- ance but also, we continue to grow and inspires. THE VIEWS EXPRESSED BY THE AUTHOR ARE PERSONAL SPIRITUAL HEALTH AT WORK PLACE AND RESILIENCE TO NEGATIVITY! S A simple relaxation exercise can motivate us to perform an act of kindness or inspire us to show appreciation to some colleague for their job, offer help to those in need, or bring comfort to someone feeling lonely and anxious. RESILIENCE TO NEGATIVITY IS ACHIEVED WHEN WE PONDER TO REFLECT UPON OUR DAILY DEEDS AND THERE IS UNBREACHABLE INTEGRATION BETWEEN OUR ACTIONS AND THOUGHT DR JYOTI JOSHI The author is a soft skill trainer, business coach and English language instructor in Germany, Europe n March 10, the credit-rating agency Moody’s placed Ethiopia on review for a downgrade. The problem isn’t violence and repres- sion in Ethiopia’s embat- tled Tigray region. Rather, Moody’s has concluded that the Ethiopian govern- ment’s commitment to en- gage with private credi- tors, as part of the G20 Common Framework for Debt Treatments beyond the Debt Service Suspen- sion Initiative, raises the risk that those creditors will incur losses. For that, the country apparently must be punished. Whereas the DSSI aims to provide immediate re- lief to low-income coun- tries during the pandemic, the Common Framework was designed to help debt- distressed sovereigns re- schedule or reduce their liabilities. For many coun- tries, it offers the best chance of making their debt burdens sustainable. But now, the threat of rat- ings downgrades is casting a shadow over these coun- tries’ prospects. This points to a systemic problem in international finance: the extraordinary – and undeserved – power wielded by a few private credit-rating agencies. Just three – Moody’s, SP Glob- al Ratings, and Fitch Rat- ings – control more than 94% of outstanding credit ratings. And there is sig- nificant cross-sharehold- ing among them. These oligopolistic firms are market movers and makers, influencing finan- cial portfolio allocations, the pricing of debt and other financial instru- ments, and the cost of cap- ital. Bolstering their au- thority, the US Securities and Exchange Commission has recognized them as of- ficial statistical rating or- ganizations. And many in- stitutional investors, re- quired by law to hold only “investment-grade” assets in their portfolios, must abide by the rating agen- cies’ verdicts. Concerns about ratings agencies were first widely expressed during the En- ron scandal in 2001. Enron, an energy-trading compa- ny , had been using account- ing tricks and complex fi- nancial instruments to mislead investors, credi- tors, and regulators about its value. The ratings agen- cies were certainly fooled: The Big Three all issued Enron investment-grade ratings just days before the company collapsed. redit-rating agencies have also been accused of enabling the United States’ subprime-mortgage bub- ble, which triggered the global financial crisis when it burst in 2008, and of exacerbating the bust through rapid reversals and downgrades. And they have been known to adjust ratings in ways that seem to reflect ideological posi- tions, such as a commit- ment to fiscal austerity . And yet, as Yuefen Li, the United Nations Inde- pendent Expert on Foreign Debt and Human Rights, points out in a new report, ratings agencies face no ac- countability for their mis- takes or damaging behav- ior. Their ratings are le- gally described as “opin- ions,” which are protected under free-speech laws, and they do not disclose their methodology. In short, ratings agencies do not bear appropriate re- sponsibility for the enor- mous power they wield. Moreover,asLialsonotes, conflictsof interestabound. Ratingsagenciesareprivate businesses, funded largely bytheinstitutionstheyrate. And they are players in the markets they purportedly assess, meaning that self- interest inevitably shapes their decision-making. Rat- ings agencies have, for ex- ample, been involved in the creation of financial prod- ucts that they were then re- sponsibleforrating–includ- ing the mortgage-backed securities that, flush with AAA ratings, helped bring about the 2008 crisis. And yet, even as regula- tors work to limit conflicts of interest among most fi- nancial-market players, they seem content to leave credit-rating agencies to police themselves. The lack of regulatory action partly reflects the lobbying power of the Big Three. And it is generating serious risks, which the coronavirus pan- demic has intensified. IN-DEPTH PSB STAFF WARNS OF A BIGGER STRUGGLE fter the indefinite protest by farmers against the three new farm laws it is now the turn of employees of nationalised banks to warn of indefinite strike if the government presses ahead with its banks privatization plan. The two-day strike by 10 lakh employees of public sector banks which ended on Tuesday crippled banking services across the country but the government is unfazed. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman was unequivocal about the privatisation plans which were intended for “scaling up” of public sector banks and wanted them to “meet the country’s aspirations”. She also sought to allay fears of employees saying that their interests will be protected and they won’t lose their jobs. Not all PSBs, she said, will be privatised. Like in the case of farm laws, the government won’t give its privatization plan a second thought as it expects to earn Rs 1.75 lakh crore through divestment of public sector units and banks. There guessing games are on about which banks will be put under the hammer and whether indus- trial houses will be allowed to bid for them. INVEST IN QUALITY OVER QUANTITY French girls always invest in a few pieces of quality clothing over a large ward- robe filled with low-cost items. Start by purging any low-quality or deteriorat- ing items of clothing you own. Replace them with high-quality pieces you know will last longer than one season. YOUR DAY Horoscope by Saurabbh Sachdeva mong all the nuts, pine nut seems to be the most exclu- sive type. Also known as pignolia or pignoli nuts, we usually see it in our pesto pasta. Yes, it comes with a high price tag and that’s probably be- cause it’s got labour-inten- sive harvesting process. In today’s blog, we talk about its origin, traits, taste, storage tips, selec- tion process, allergies, health benefits, and two easy recipes that can be made under 10 minutes! Scroll down: NAME Botanically, pine trees be- long to the family of Pinaceae and the Pinus ge- nus. Some of the common names are pinon nuts, pignoli, cedar nuts, chilgo- za, pinyon pinenuts, etc. A great number of species of the genus Pinus produce edible seeds. ORIGIN These come from the pine trees. Pine cones, specifi- cally. Interestingly, these aren’t nuts but seeds that are found inside these cones. Usually, it takes about 1.5 years for them to be ready, and, hence the price! Also, because they come covered in a thick shell that needs to be bro- ken before they’re sold in the market, the extra la- bour adds to the final cost which the consumer bears. The pine trees are com- mon in China, Russia, Mongolia, Korea, and Af- ghanistan. While Europe is a large consumer and producer of pine nuts as well, Italy is where this nut is extensively used in the preparation of traditional basil pesto. Did you know the “flow- ers” of the pine tree even- tually become the cone? The female cones take about two–three years to mature after pollination. While at it, the female cones (ovulate or seed cones) may become any- thing between 3 cm to 35 cm. Once the scaly cone matures, it splits open nat- urally to release the kernel – the pine nut! FEATURES Pine nuts have a dark- brown outer shell that’s very hard in nature. Inside it, the edible kernel is formed that is off-white in colour and relatively sweet in taste. TASTE They have a cashew-like texture and the flavour is quite similar to any other nut like walnut and pea- nut. Because of their rich texture, they are a great add on to any dip, sauce and cream. THE INDIAN PINE NUTS These grow in the Him- alayan region like Himachal P r a d e s h , K a s h m i r and Uttra- khand. This variety is known as Chilgoza pine nut (Pinus gerard- iana) and are long and slender in shape with pointed ends. ALLERGIES Some people suffer from ‘pine nut mouth’ or ‘pine nut syn- drome,’ in which eating pine nuts give a metallic, bitter taste on the taste buds. Some studies have shown that this syndrome only happens on consum- ing specific species of pine trees found in China. In some rare cases, pine nut allergy can cause itchy skin, breathing dif- ficulty, abdomen pain and vomiting. BUYING AND STORAGE While buying unshelled nuts, look for dark brown colour, uniformity among the nuts, spot-free and crack-free nuts and feel the weight when you put them on your palms. While buy- ing shelled kernels, check for uniformity in all the nuts and always buy from an authentic source. To store, use an air-tight jar so that no humidity can mess with the nuts. You can either store them in the refrigerator or keep at a cold place. Their shelf- life is long if well taken care of. Just like stale al- monds, if you notice a pun- gent smell, oily surface and a bitter taste in your pine nuts, it’s better to dis- card them. USAGE Pine nuts can be used in a number of baked items, soups, pasta, dressings, dips, salads and also smoothie bowls. Their combined creamy and crunchy texture is what makes them a top choice of chefs around the world. It’s, however, sug- gested to roast these nuts a little before using them in your recipes to bring out the extra flavour. All you need to do is just fry them on a pan with/with- out any grease. HEALTH BENEFITS 1Pine nuts, like other nuts, are high in calo- ries. 100 g of dry kernels contain 673 calories, which is monounsaturated fats, iron and magnesium. 2They can promote health as they’re rich in phytochemicals, vita- mins, antioxidants, and minerals. 3Pine nuts are rich in vitamin E, zinc, fibre, and protein. Vitamin E contains antioxidants that protect the skin from harmful free radicals. 4They’re rich in mono- unsaturated fatty acids like oleic acid (18:1 undif- ferentiated fat) that con- trol LDL or “bad choles- terol” and increases HDL or “good cholesterol” in our blood. 5People on diet are often asked to snack on pine nuts as they contain essen- tial fatty acid (the omega-6 fat), pinolenic acid. These nuts have the potential to curb one’s appetite, as the pinolenicacidhelpsrelease the hunger-suppressant en- zymes called cholecysto- kinin and Glucagon-like peptide-1(GLP-1)inthegut. 6Pine nuts are an excel- lent source of Vitamin B-complex group, such as thiamin, riboflavin, nia- cin, pantothenic acid, vita- min B-6 (pyridoxine) and folates. These vitamins help in cellular substrate metabolism. 7Among all the nuts and seeds, pine nuts are one of the most powerful source of manganese, which helps our body de- velop resistance against infectious agents and harmful free radicals.
