Oracle Hyperion Planning and Essbase are widely and successfully used by many companies for forecasting, budgeting, reporting and complex data analysis. Databases can vary from very small BSO (block storage) to extremely large ASO (aggregate storage) cubes. The decisions regarding how to build data and metadata integration from source systems into Planning and Essbase can be challenging; this becomes even more complex when considering how to integrate data and metadata within the EPM suite of products.
On August 18 you will learn about the various data and metadata integration options for Essbase and Planning. We will discuss the business cases and pros / cons of various tools and solutions, including:
Essbase Integration Services (EIS)
Oracle Data Integrator (ODI)
Enterprise Performance Management Architect (EPMA)
Financial Data Quality Management (FDM)
Essbase Studio
Additional solutions
You will also see demonstrations of some of these tools and observe first-hand how they are used to integrate with Planning and Essbase.

FDM to Essbase Implementation Case The Finit Solutions SeriesFDM to Essbase Implementation Case
Project Overview
End‐Users needed the ability to load data to an Essbase cube and to also maintain
allocation percentages for specific types of accounts that were also being loadedallocation percentages for specific types of accounts that were also being loaded
to Essbase. The solution needed to replace a very complex process that was
being done in a complex spreadsheet.
Data Flow
• Users would execute an FDM task in which data was imported from an Oracle
EBS staging table.
• As the data is being imported, if an account is contained in the allocation tables
in FDM the line will be allocated based on a percentagein FDM, the line will be allocated based on a percentage.
• Prior to the load to Essbase, FDM will look to the outline to ensure that all
records are mapped to valid members.
• Then all data will be loaded to Essbase and an Essbase Calc Script will be
executed in FDM. A data validation report will be displayed after the load.
Maintenance
The only maintenance involved modifying the mapping tables or the allocation

Strengths and Use Case

• IT driven financial data or metadata load processing.
• Situations where limited mapping or IT controlled mapping is needed.
LimitationsLimitations
• ODI does not have a pre‐built web based user interface to map, validate or load
data or metadata.
• Validations and logging items will more than likely need to be custom built (i.e. gg g y (

ODI & FDM to Planning Implementation Case
The Finit Solutions Series
Project Overview
Prior to this Planning implementation, the client was only using Essbase and HFM.
ODI was selected as the metadata integration tool for Planning. Data is then
loaded to Essbase by FDM as FDM allows complex mapping and was already being
used for HFM loads.
Data Flow
A Planning metadata load file is first generated in Excel. VBA processes in Excel pull
the data from a Showcase query, build the hierarchy and save the file to a pre‐q y, y p
defined ODI data source location. An ODI interface and package updates the
Planning metadata.
Maintenance
If there are any changes in the data source/format or if there are any new
interfaces/packages, the ODI Designer (Model & Project) needs to be updated.

Project Overview
The client was using a home grown organization hierarchy maintenance system
which was feeding flat files to varied systems including GL, Fixed Asset, HR, and the
Hyperion suite including Essbase and Planning. This system required great
knowledge and any staff turn over required months of training. DRM was selected
for metadata maintenance. Output from DRM was fed to the varied systems
including a data warehouse which sourced EIS to Essbase.
Data Flow
An EIS OLAP Model and Metaoutline were created for each Essbase cube. Full
automation was implemented utilizing batch and mxl scripts.

New Essbase cubes required a new Metaoutline and cube specific batch and mxl

set up.
• HAL did have a mapping tool, Translation Manager, to allow for
mapping to take place between source and Hyperion targets.
• HAL was an OEM product for Hyperion, developed by Vignette.
• HAL was discontinued in June 2010 meaning the product is no
