COUPLE OF TIPS – DAVE’S ABC’S

> Awareness
 Set up a system to monitor all grant opportunities. Don’t miss anything.

> Business Case
 Make sure to have a business case for why your project will get the most
done for the amount requested. That’s how most panels compare requests.

> Collaboration
 Build strong relationships with local businesses, industry
partners, colleges, and professional organizations and incorporate them into
your grant requests. They legitimize your asks & can lighten the load for you.

> Discretion
 Ask for what you need, and keep your request below the max award amount
    if feasible.

Editor's Notes

  • #6 This is one of the most commonly misunderstood issues around Perkins and other funding sources I have run into with district and school funding administrators. Please Note: I am not saying that you shouldn’t use certificates to recognize student achievement. But when discussing funding viability, it is critical to understand this distinction.
  • #7 Story time – California war stories Chuck Parkins, Lee Murdock, etc. When someone tells you that you can’t use funding for a specific purpose, more often than you would believe, they’re guessing or regurgitating what they have been told.
  • #17 Multiple year purchases must be for a license that has a multi-year shelf-life, and cannot be made by purchasing multiple quantities of a single-year license.
  • #38 Remember this for later in the presentation
  • #39 Where do your programs fit within these classifications? Business? Applied Science?
  • #43 University Senior High School in LAUSD funded their CTE Certification programs through Title 1 Funding. In subsequent years, they expanded their offering via MAGNET School funding.
  • #50 Using credible sources like Ivy-League schools in your grant writing will add weight and credibility to your application. Find a good balance between readibility and credibility.
  • #51 Other tidbits:Keep your request aligned to the intent of the grant.
