Market Summary
14-Aug-2012
After a flat opening, the benchmarks took off post the release of lower than expected July inflation data to close in green.
India's main inflation gauge, the wholesale price index (WPI), came surprisingly way below the expectation at 6.87% (provisional) for
the month of July, 2012 (over July, 2011) as compared to 7.25% (provisional) for the previous month and 9.36% during the
corresponding month of the previous year. (News)
After the poor show on IIP front, markets are now looking up to Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to slash interest rates to boost the
sagging economy. RBI has maintained in the past that rate cut is not an option in the high inflation scenario.
Bad news from the international trade front, India's exports dropped by 14.8 per cent year-on-year to USD 22.4 billion in July this year
as against USD 26.3 billion in July 2011. The decline is attributed to the global demand slowdown. Imports too contracted during the
month by 7.61 per cent to USD 37.9 billion.
