Much of the impetus for this research was the growing interest among institutional policy makers on how they might influence student enrollments. In this webinar, we will provide an overview of research about college choice that is relevant for admissions and enrollment management professionals. In particular, we will review the factors that influence students’ decisions and the timing of their college choice process. We will discuss differences among white, African American, Latino, and Asian American students with respect to these factors, as well as research on the factors influencing nontraditional students’ college choice. Throughout this webinar, we will highlight the relevance of this body of research for institutional policies and practices.

Increasing College-Going Culture: Suggestions for School Counselors
Carolina P. Perez and Stephaney S. Morrison
Perez, Carolina P., is a school counselor for grades 9–12. Perez works with ELLs
and immigrant families to empower and provide them with the resources necessary
to succeed in the United States. As a former ELL and undocumented student who
migrated at the age of 11, her passion is to advocate for immigrant students and
families.
Morrison, Stephaney S., Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor of Counselor Education
in the Graduate School of Education and Allied Professions at Fairfield University,
CT. Dr. Morrison was an elementary/junior high school counselor in her native
country, Jamaica. Her research is focused on issues that impact Caribbean
immigrant families and children; specifically, the academic, socio-emotional, and
career/college issues of Caribbean immigrant children living in the United States.
She also focuses on preparing school counselors to work with immigrant children.
Abstract
English language learners (ELLs) represent a growing population in the U.S. K–
12 system. Research has shown that these students face many challenges that affect
their trajectory to college. The challenges include, but are not limited to, issues
related to academics, socioeconomic status, parental involvement, and socio-
emotional strains. This article explores the many obstacles ELLs face that affect
their college/career access and attainment and provides suggestions for school
counselors working with ELLs to increase their college-going culture.

English language learners (ELLs) is a term used to refer to students who receive
any language assistance program (Cook, 2015). ELLs in the United States are a diverse
group who speak hundreds of different languages from many parts of the world; they differ
in ethnicity, culture, educational background, and socioeconomic status (American Youth
Policy Forum, 2009). In addition, not all ELLs are immigrants; some are born and raised
in the United States (American Youth Policy Forum, 2009). Although ELLs come from
different backgrounds, it is important to note that the largest group of ELLs in the United

States are Spanish-speaking students (Winsler et al., 2014). In addition, ELLs are said to
be the fastest growing group of students in K–12 education (Kanno & Cromley, 2015). The

Bridging the Achievement Gap - The Need for Change in American Public Education

Although there is an abundance of research on middle school counseling, college readiness and belonging, there is a gap in the research regarding middle school students
and attempts to correlate their sense of belonging to college-going beliefs. Research identifies eighth grade as a critical time in a student’s education in which they make
important post-secondary decisions. The research stressed that a student’s academic achievement was not only influenced by intellectual abilities, but by their school climate. The purpose of this mixed methods study was to identify a correlation between school- based factors, specifically a student’s sense of belonging, and college-going beliefs. One hundred eighty-four eighth-grade students from a diverse suburban middle school were
surveyed on their college-going beliefs as well as their sense of belonging. In addition, focus groups were facilitated to further explore how students felt about their school environment and post-secondary planning. The findings showed a significant statistical correlation between students’ sense of school belonging and college-going beliefs. This is significant because it begins to address the void in the research identifying how school
based factors are related to students’ college-going beliefs. Focus group data also enhanced quantitative findings by highlighting how students who described a positive sense of belonging in school had strong intentions and higher confidence for attending college after high school. The results of this research will help educators improve programs, develop stronger relationships with students and strengthen the curriculum to better prepare students for high school and beyond. Abstract
This paper addresses selected factors contributing to the educational outcomes in the U.S.
compared to Finland. The U.S. system is the focus, but it is compared and contrasted to the
education system in Finland because the international comparisons of educational outcomes
position Finland at the top of the list. Basic information related to education and employment in
each country is provided, and the tools used to measure educational outcomes are explained.
The literature review provides suggestions regarding the possible causes of educational
disparities within the U.S., as well as the factors contributing to educational outcomes. In
addition, the results of an empirical survey of college students’ opinions about the factors
playing the most important role in shaping educational outcomes are presented, analyzed, and
interpreted by means of selected sociological classical and contemporary theoretical
perspectives.

Education in the United States and Finland: A Comparative Analysis
This analysis was conducted in order to examine educational disparities within the United
States (U.S.) education system. Within this system, there exists evidence of disparities between
funding, curriculum, and test scores. Some schools have higher or lower funding, varying
curriculum content, and a wide range of test scores, depending on the school. This thesis is
based on two major components: one based only on secondary sources & another one based on
data I generated by conducting an exploratory study of college students’ opinions about the
factors contributing to disparities in education and education outcomes. Both the literature
review and the survey focus solely on the U.S. system of education with no comparisons made to
the education system in any other country. The importance of the literature review rests on the
illustration of disparities in educational attainment within the U.S. education system and the
discussions surrounding these disparities. The survey is important because it provides an
appraisal of the assessment that college students have about the U.S. education system.
Knowing how college students assess the current education system is crucial to the future of the
U.S. education system because they are the future educators and leaders of the U.S.
I chose to assess the education system in Finland and compare it to the education system
in the United States because, although Finland has a smaller economy .

· In education, the term at risk refers primarily to students who are at risk of school failure. As we discussed earlier, at risk actually means much more than flunking reading or math, or even dropping out of school. Yet from an educator’s perspective, educational concerns define at-risk issues. School problems and dropout are linked to many other problems expressed by young people (Suh, Suh, & Houston, 2007; Henry et al., 2009; Rumberger & Ah Lim, 2008). The strong relationships between school difficulties and other problems, as well as evidence that educational involvement is a protective factor influencing resilience (Search Institute, 2006), highlight the pivotal position of schools. In schools, prevention efforts can reach the greatest number of young people; therefore, examining the educational environment is critical.
THE VALUE OF EDUCATION
There are a number of indicators of the value placed on education in the United States. News reports compare the scores of students in the United States and in other countries on tests in geography and spelling, math and science. These reports consistently favor students in other countries. They imply that learning in U.S. schools is somehow not quite up to par. Does a student’s ability to spell reflect his or her ability to think? Does recall of dates, locations, or facts indicate a student’s problem-solving skills? The answer to these questions is “No.” Learning is the act of acquiring knowledge or a skill through observation, experience, instruction, or study, yet these comparisons suggest a view of learning that reduces this complicated act to an isolated and mechanical process. In addition, these comparisons often fail to note that in the United States all children are expected to attend school through high school graduation, not just wealthy or middle-class urban or college-bound students.

- 2. Introduction: Who are ESL Students? ESL students are students whose primary language is something other than English. These students are primarily from central America and Asia. From 1998 to 2008 the number of ESL students rose almost 51%, compared to the 7.8% rise of English speaking Students. (www.edweek.org) Today 21% of all students speak something other than English at home (almost 1 in every 4)
- 3. Thesis The overall hostile attitude towards second languages in America are preventing these students from reaching college and improving their overall lives. Something that is promised everyday to English speaking students. It is important to note that individual circumstances can not be accounted for in this statement. Statements like “This is America, speak English.” Create a hostile environment for these students.

Host Environments matter According to Martin and Nakayama (2010) “How one adapts depends to some extent on the host environment– whether it is is welcoming or hostile (p. 321) Americans speak second languages at a rate of 18% where as 53% of European’s can speak more than one language. (Skorton D, &Altschuler G. 2012)
- 6. Reaching the next level For High School students in America the long term goal to reach college. College is often seen has the best way to improve economic status and reach the next level of your life. But is college an option for ESL students? The two colleges with the highest numbers of graduates from ESL programs are the University of Buffalo and Portland State University at 10% of graduates coming from the ESL programs. (Hopkins, K. 2011)
- 7. Reaching the next level Continue… 600 universities provide ESL programs, yet only 14 universities' had 5% or more of their students that are graduating through ESL programs. (Hopkins, K, 2011) Remember 21% of all students today are considered ESL students. 68% of all students graduating today are going onto college immediately following graduating high school. (Hopkins, K. 2011) ESL students are reaching and graduating college at a far less percentage than English Speaking Students in America.
- 8. Racism and Prejudice Racism and Prejudice is a something that everywhere deals with, just because more Europeans speaking multiple languages doesn’t mean they don’t deal with racism and prejudice. This is still an international problem just as it is a problem in America. America was a choice made by these students and their families. When these families choose to come to America they also choose the American Education system. Which is why it’s important to examine the American education system as whole.
- 9. The American Education System According to Joanna Jacobs at huffingtonpost.com test’s were given out in 56 countries in 2006. During that test America ranked 25th in Math, 17th in Science, and 14th in reading. 6 % of students tested at an advanced level in all subjects, a number lower than 30 other countries. The states of West Virginia, New Mexico, and Mississippi tested behind the countries of Serbia and Uruguay.
- 10. American Education System Continued What does this mean? This mean that’s the America education system is struggling as a whole. That not just ESL students are struggling but all students are. America has often been self proclaimed as the greatest country in the world, but clearly the education system is broken and needs help.
- 11. Conclusion The education system is broken. America is falling behind other places in the world in educating all students. Nearly 70% of students go on to higher education, yet the 14 highest ranked colleges for ESL students graduate only 5 to 10% ESL students. 21% of all students are ESL students, this means they are succeeding in high education at a far less rate than those who speaking English. This is one of only two true conclusion that can be made. The second conclusion is that the America education system is not as strong as it should be or once was. These students and their families choose to come here and with that choose a failing education system. A new take on education is needed in America not just for ESL students but for all students.
