Samantha Cook is presenting her final portfolio for the Interdisciplinary Studies program. Her overall goal is to obtain a position in community services and education working in family planning. She outlines 5 learning objectives for the program: 1) develop an awareness of diversity, 2) analyze data and research, 3) evaluate public health programs, 4) observe social structures and institutions, and 5) recognize gender roles. She took courses in sociology, women's studies, and health education to achieve these objectives and gain skills applicable to her career goals.

5. SOC107 Principles of Sociology; This class helped raise my
awareness of diversity of different cultures around the world
and made me realize how powerful cultures can be.

6. SOC305 Sociology of American Society; I gained
knowledge of how American societies are diverse in a
multitude of ways such as religion, family, and
schooling as well as how these diversities take course
in society.

8. SOC 326 Sociology of Demography; I gained awareness of
how to analyze demographic data of fertility, mortality, and life
expectancy.

9. WS201 Introduction to Women Studies; This class
helped me develop the knowledge and ability to
conduct research and collect survey data.

11. HED 310 Community Health; I have learned how different
communities influence health programs and the problems
that can occur within these programs.

12. WS201 Introduction to Women Studies; This course
taught me how different social movements have
influenced the fundamental structures of health programs
throughout time such as the birth control movement and
Roe vs. Wade.

13. SOC 301 Introduction and History of Social Service Agents;
This course will give me the knowledge about health service
agencies, and the functions of these agencies.

14. UNIV 309 Civic Engagement; This course will allow me
to work towards improving a community situation in a
public health setting while gaining field experience.

15. HED 387 Fitness and Stress Management; I have learned
how different stressors impact our health through a health
program emphasizing fitness to decrease stress.

17. SOC305 Sociology of American Society; I have learned
about the structures in American societies and the
influences on these structures including religion, family,
and schools, as well as how these influences shape our
societies and culture.

18. SOC369 Sociology of Mass Media and Society; This class
has taught me how media, and mass media impacts not
only society, but social institutions, and how media is
causing social change.

19. SOC 370 Sociology of Social Change; Through this
course I have learned about the development of social
institutional development, and the effects social
processes have on these institutions.

21. WS201 Introduction to Women Studies; This course taught me
about gender roles in society, and how to recognize these
gender roles.

22. SOC356 Sociology of Gender; I gained the knowledge in
understanding how we recognize gender, the social roles and
rules we place on gender, and how masculinity and femininity
affect gender.
