Final Internship Presentation

Editor's Notes

  • #2 Hi my name is Marcus Watson and this is my presentation about my experienced at Emerald and the achievements I have gained from this internship.
  • #3 I will be covering, Emerald Publishing, the innovation team, the user research and user experience timeline, my objectives, my Achievements and finally the problems and issues I have faced.
  • #4 On the very first day of my internship I was introduced to the innovation team (which included Andy, Rebecca, Kat, Jamie and Dj) and I soon saw they were a happy, enthusiastic bunch of people. They taught me the basics of a publishing company and the team’s general intentions. To which point I learnt, with the help of other colleagues around the company, that the innovation team were a new department brought in to help expand and develop the company, with the use of user research and user experience. However with this it was still not completely clear to me in the first week how exactly the team would be achieving this. Nevertheless, within my first week, I was thrown into empathy mapping (a method of user research) and was slowly learning about the design process. Thus within a couple more weeks (and an away day) I got to understand the full intentions behind the Innovation team.
  • #5 Which to some up was: To find and test suitable user research methods, that can be used to validate key personas and determine the issues existing customers have using Emeralds services. So that developments can be made in user experience to enhance the usability, accessibility and pleasure between the user and the product. In addition to this the team will also be pushing forward the community ways of working to the rest of the company. And to simplify this brief based around User Experience, the user (i.e. the customer) has to go through a process to get the product they want, the easier and simpler the product is to get, understand and use the happier the user will be. Therefore the innovation team will find out what the user finds difficult through research and then come up a solution to those problems, thus improving their experience. The way in which the innovation team achieved this can be shown with…
  • #6 … the UR & UX Timeline. As following the brief before, this highlights all the specific tasks the team has taken to achieve this final goal. They therefore… [Run through]
  • #7 My participation to these objectives were to: Help determine an appropriate UR methodology, through testing and reviewing. – All of which included interviews, card sorting and empathy mapping. Apply UR and UX methods on product development. Document and facilitate spark labs in the strategic conference and present an overview of the process. With the use of Yammer for the teams updates. Create the user experience community.
  • #8 My main achievements and contributions with the innovation team have included: Gathering and analysing data from the internal empathy maps to assure it was a suitable UR method to use in the problem identification of EI.com. Hitting two birds with one stone, we also did it to cultivate internal personas. Working with the team to plan the strategic conference, work out our community values and determining the successfulness of the UR methodology of empathy mapping to which I gave a short presentation on. Participating in lab team sprints to kick off UR and UX for EI.com, to work out the initial problems a Librarian and Early Career Researcher face with publishing companies. This enabled me to see how two separate team’s can work to sprint out a solution and design to a problem. Presenting the full process and review of the Spark lab back to the community and to an external user experiencer (Kelly Charles). Kelly was also there to share her recruiting process. Designing the UX community logo and values poster for the community brand and collaborating it to the rest of the company. Producing internal persona posters from the first data taken from the empathy maps. And finally along with all this… I also…
  • #9 … I also created a few other graphic design applications such as visual diagrams for colleagues in the product team and other ones which helped to visualise processes in my presentations. For example, a visual diagram for the design sprint process that the Spark lab teams took part in and to which I used in one of my presentations. Then there’s the Strategic Priorities #4 which I just made for Steve Lodge in the product team.
  • #10 The problems that myself and the team have faced in the past 3 months have included: The recruitment of users – as since Emerald publish to education institutions, all the personas involve people who work or study at University’s, and with our research starting in August, university’s were not open and all the personas were not as available to recruit as much as they would have been between term times (October to April) especially students. This also subsequently delayed work in UX. So instead of trying to source data from all personas the UR team just focused on the ones which were most available, the best they could.   During the production of the UX community brand, the logo was originally meant to be taken on by the graphics team. But because of there mass amounts of work they were finding it difficult get it started. The task was therefore given to me, however with less experience in graphics; it took me longer to design and achieve a logo that was good enough for the UX Community. However instead of complaining about task given to me I got on with it and tried to complete it to my best standard.
  • #11 This internship has given me the chance to experience certain challenges and tasks that can’t be experienced at University. The internship has therefore been quite challenging at times however, this has enabled me to develop my skills specifically for the workplace, i.e. the real world. As personally I believe the knowledge behind the subject is not the only thing needed to make success in a business. During this internship I have therefore: Gained more experience in the design industry. Learnt about the design based process of User Research and User Experience. Given me office environment skillsets. Including teamwork, communication skills, and presentation skills. Broadened my knowledge on Microsoft and adobe programmes.
  • #12 Design is a subject that can be applied to a lot of different industries. As for my university degree, which involves design and only design applications, it was great to see how it can be used in a non design industry (publishing). Additionally with the use of user research and experience, it shows how far a business can go to ensure their designs or services are produced to the best and highest standard. But most importantly I have learnt how beneficial user research can be in the development of a new product, and that even if a product looks amazing and excels in its design criteria; it can still be poor or ineffective due to its usability. Overall these 3 months have been challenging, productive but also a lot of fun. Honestly before I started here, as my first office job, I thought it was going to be a bit boring. But it hasn’t at all, the work was quite enjoyable and the office environment was calm and welcoming, which however I think had a lot to do with my team. They are a great bunch of people who make productivity seem fun, and along with the other departments I have worked with in our community and in the spark labs, the company is a great place to work for.
  • #13 Thank you for listening, are there any questions?
