Steven Gursten Presents ‘End Distracted Driving’ to MS Mother’s Council (MSMC)Steven Gursten
Steven Gursten, auto attorney and safety advocate, will be speaking on “End Distracted Driving” at the January 18th, 2018 Mothers’ Council meeting. Texting while driving has become a safety crisis, but it is one that very few people know about. While it is not just a teen problem, reaching students and parents is vital to changing our culture of driving so that just like drunk driving, distracted driving will one day be socially unacceptable. The presentation will empower parents and students on how to end distracted driving.
Steven Gursten has helped to develop the distracted driving presentation through EndDD.org that has now been seen by nearly 400,000 teens across the U.S. and Canada, including over 7,500 students in Michigan. Steve has given this presentation at high schools throughout Michigan. This important safety presentation is an eye-opening challenge to engage and empower students and parents to decide if their driving behaviors need to change. Students gain the skills to speak up while in a car full of potentially dangerous distractions – including friends, siblings and technology – so the driver can concentrate on driving safely. Parents learn how our children model our own driving behaviors in the car. Rationalizations for why we drive distracted are challenged and specific strategies for safe driving, and for helping our own teen drivers drive without distraction, are developed.
Many of EndDD.org speakers are trial lawyers, like Steve, who have seen first-hand the devastation left behind from distracted driving car crashes. In this safety presentation, Steve shares from cases he has personally worked on where lives have been lost from distracted driving, and his outreach work and scholarship with Bonnie Raffaele, whose 17year old daughter Kelsey was tragically killed while texting. Kelsey became the driving force behind Kelsey’s Law, the law in Michigan that bans all cell phone use by teen drivers.
Each and every one of us has the power to take lives if we make poor driving choices, but as parents we also have the power to save lives by becoming ambassadors for safe, distraction-free driving. For more information go to: www.EndDD.org

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

AT&T CHALLENGES LOCAL TEENS TO JOIN
“IT CAN WAIT” MOVEMENT TO HALT TEXTING WHILE DRIVING
AT&T Simulator Event at North Olmsted High School Encourages Students
and Faculty to Pledge Not to Text and Drive
CLEVELAND, (May 6, 2013) — Representatives from North Olmsted High School joined AT&T,
North Olmsted Mayor Kevin Kennedy, State Senator Tom Patton, State Representative Nan
Baker, and the Ohio State Highway Patrol today to address a dangerous practice that puts
millions of Americans at risk: texting while driving.
To drive home the message and make our roads and highways safer, AT&T brought a
simulator, allowing students and faculty to experience firsthand the dangers of texting and
driving. The students also heard from the organizations regarding Ohio’s texting ban, House Bill
99, which passed the Ohio General Assembly last year and went into effect in the fall. House
Bill 99 also contained a 6 month grace period which ended on March 1st
.
“Texting and driving is a perilous mix. It endangers your own life and the lives of people you’ve
never even met,” said Senator Tom Patton. “I’m proud to join AT&T’s effort to remind drivers,
especially our teenagers, of the potentially deadly consequences of texting while driving and the
fact that this dangerous practice is now illegal across Ohio.”
“More than 100,000 times each year, an automobile crashes and people are injured or die while
a driver was texting and driving,” said Mayor Kevin Kennedy, citing a statistic from the National
Safety Council1
. “In North Olmsted we continue to educate all drivers about Ohio’s texting ban,
and this event at North Olmsted High School is yet another opportunity to get the message out
that when it comes to texting while driving, It Can Wait.”
“Our goal is to save lives,” AT&T External Affairs Director Kevin Lynch said. “AT&T applauds the
efforts of the Ohio General Assembly – as well as Governor Kasich – on their efforts to pass
and sign into law House Bill 99, the statewide texting while driving ban, which took effect last
fall.”
2. 2
In 2012, 165 organizations, including national nonprofits, commercial businesses, law
enforcement, professional associations and government agencies, as well as many educators,
legislators, and other supporters, helped get out the message and encouraged people to make
a personal pledge not to text and drive. This combined effort, including those of the Federal
Communications Commission, the U.S. Department of Transportation, National Organizations
for Youth Safety, SADD, Big Brothers Big Sisters, RadioShack and CTIA-The Wireless
Association, made a difference. Major highlights include:
Awareness of the It Can Wait message increased 26 percent during the key campaign
period.1
One-in-three people in that period said that texting while driving messages have an
impact on their driving habits.1
More than 1.3 million personal commitments never to text and drive have been made at
ItCanWait.com, through Facebook, text-to-pledge, tweet-to-pledge or at events.
“Texting while driving is the most dangerous form of distracted driving; it takes a driver’s eyes
off the road, hands off the wheel, and mind off the task of driving for an extended period of
time,” said State Representative Nan Baker. “It will take our combined and concerted efforts to
stop the rampant spread of texting behind the wheel.”
In 2013, AT&T is extending its work with existing It Can Wait collaborators and significantly
expanding their ranks. Plans include:
Working with device makers to pre-load no-texting-while-driving technologies and
solutions into handsets, with the goal of making these solutions standard on all AT&T
smartphones.
Engaging cities such as Houston, Texas, and companies including USAA and Walmart
to discuss potential new It Can Wait collaborations.
Making resources – ranging from It Can Wait branded materials, to teaching aids and
sample company policies – available to other organizations for programs they develop.
Launching a year-round texting-while-driving simulator tour targeting more than 380
events nationwide.
3. 3
“Distracted driving is an epidemic on our roadways, and we need people all across Ohio to take
action in their communities to help put a stop to it," said Colonel John Born, Ohio State Highway
Patrol superintendent.
AT&T, its 240,000 employees and other supporters are calling on all drivers to go to
www.ItCanWait.com to take the no-texting-while-driving pledge, and then share their promise
with others via Twitter (#itcanwait) and Facebook. The pledge is part of the public awareness
campaign aimed directly at stopping the dangerous practice of texting while driving.
