The Story of S.O.P.A.
• The Stop Online Piracy Act (H.R. 3261, or SOPA)
would have expanded law enforcements’ ability to
  fight internet piracy.
• Millions of dollars were spent by corporations
fighting for and against this controversial bill,
  including staging an internet blackout.

What is Lobbying?

❖ To conduct activities aimed at influencing public officials on
    legislation.

❖ A way special interests groups can try to get their cause out
by hiring professional advocates to argue for specific
    legislation.

❖ Extremely costly- advocates are well paid, which means only
the rich (e.g. corporations) can afford it.
How much do corporations
                 spend on lobbying?
Company Total (1998-2012) Year Total Year Total

Issues with Corporate
                                   Lobbying
✤ Often, groups with more money have the ability to exert more
    influence.

✤ Interests groups would donate exorbitant sums to campaign
funds in hopes of receiving ‘favors’ from the possible
    incumbent.

✤ As most people aren’t rich enough to afford lobbying, do
corporations (with more money and lobbying power) have
more political power than they should?
What to do-

Corporate lobbying can never be completely
eradicated- protected by 1st amendment.
Steps can be taken to control it, though.
Knowledge is power. Spread the word.

  spending on lobbyists. Visit http://petition.org

  bureaucracy.
QUOTES

“Real lobbying reform must end the practice of corporate lobbyists
writing our laws.” -Marty Meehan

“Its a sorry statement about how broken Washington is that we
could not take advantage of this unique and sad moment in
history and enact serious lobbying reform. We owed it to the
people who sent us to Washington to root out corruption, and the
Senate turned its back on a golden opportunity today.” -Senator
John Kerry
