Math should not be feared. Many
students think math is a hard subject but
with effort and motivation you can
become a math expert!
Algebra
Algebra replaces
unknown numbers
in a problem with
letters.
Algebra is generally introduced during middle
school. Students tend to have a difficulty with
algebra but the more you practice the better
you will become.
Students should always check their
work before handing in a quiz or
test. It can be easy to make a simple
mistake if you don’t look over your
answers.
Geometry
Geometry is about shapes
and angles. Geometry like
algebra is introduced in
middle school and is
included in standardized
testing.
Geometry can be a fun
subject. Students can play
with geometric manipulatives
for a hands on learning
experience.
Pre-calculus
This picture is an example
of a unit circle. It is very
helpful in many lessons
involving pre-calculus
based questions.
Pre-calculus is what
students take before
calculus. It gives
students a foundation
of what they will expect
to learn in the future
years if they continue
taking math courses.
Pre-calculus is usually
taken by juniors and
seniors in high school.
Graphing calculators are
encouraged to help
students especially in
this area of math!
Calculus
Calculus is defined as, “the branch of mathematics that deals with
the finding and properties of derivatives and integrals of
functions.”
Calculus is used in every branch of the
physical sciences. This means it is important to
learn.
Probability and Statistics
Probability has to
do with chance.
There are many
real life scenarios
that involve
probability and
statistics. For
example…
Gambling!
Each year
casinos make
millions of
dollars. Many
card games
involves
probability.
So improving your math skills
can increase your chances are
of winning big!
Regarding statistics…think of sports!
Math calculations are involved
in calculating statistics of every
sport. For example, baseball
players are paid based on
performance and their batting
average is often looked at
when deciding how effective a
player is.
Earning a degree in math can lead to many great
professions and be very valuable. Some of the fastest
growing jobs in mathematics are as follows:
Economists
Personal Financial Advisor
Statistician
Math Teacher
Now you see just some examples of why math is valuable and the
many different paths a degree can take you. Work hard to ensure a
bright future!
