Final Degree Project Report - Mapping the Sq Current System

The document summarizes a comparison between a model of the Sq current system developed using the Biot-Savart law and one derived from real magnetic data from 13 northern hemisphere magnetometer stations. It identifies the latitudinal dependence of the diurnal variations in the magnetic field caused by the Sq current system. An estimated equivalent current system is given based on averaged monthly data as well as the position of the focus of the current whorl. Discrepancies between the model and data are discussed, with the most significant being the model uses simple mathematics without accounting for external influences on the current system.

The Monte Carlo Method of Random Sampling in Statistical Physics
The Monte Carlo technique of random sampling was reviewed in this work. It plays an important role in Statistical Mechanics as well as in scientific computation especially when problems have a vast phase space. The purpose of this paper is to review a general method, suitable to fast electronic computing machines, for calculating the properties of any system which may be considered as composed of interacting particles. Concepts such as phase transition, the Ising model,ergodicity, simple sampling, Metropolis algorithm, quantum Monte Carlo and Non-Boltzmann sampling were discussed. The applications of Monte Carlo method in other areas of study aside Statistical Physics werealso mentioned.

The presented computer models may be applied both by project and design engineers using the most advanced computer-aided design of electrostatic technologies.

Interchange reconnection as the source of the fast solar wind within coronal ...
The fast solar wind that flls the heliosphere originates from deep within regions of
open magnetic feld on the Sun called ‘coronal holes’. The energy source responsible
for accelerating the plasma is widely debated; however, there is evidence that it is
ultimately magnetic in nature, with candidate mechanisms including wave heating1,2
and interchange reconnection3–5
. The coronal magnetic feld near the solar surface is
structured on scales associated with ‘supergranulation’ convection cells, whereby
descending fows create intense felds. The energy density in these ‘network’ magnetic
feld bundles is a candidate energy source for the wind. Here we report measurements
of fast solar wind streams from the Parker Solar Probe (PSP) spacecraft6
that provide
strong evidence for the interchange reconnection mechanism. We show that the
supergranulation structure at the coronal base remains imprinted in the near-Sun
solar wind, resulting in asymmetric patches of magnetic ‘switchbacks’7,8
and bursty
wind streams with power-law-like energetic ion spectra to beyond 100 keV. Computer
simulations of interchange reconnection support key features of the observations,
including the ion spectra. Important characteristics of interchange reconnection in
the low corona are inferred from the data, including that the reconnection is
collisionless and that the energy release rate is sufcient to power the fast wind. In
this scenario, magnetic reconnection is continuous and the wind is driven by both
the resulting plasma pressure and the radial Alfvénic fow bursts.

Electrical generation of spin polarization in semiconductors is of great interest for the device potential in spintronics. One such mechanism is chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS), with which structural chirality leads to different electric conductivities for electrons of opposite spins. CISS has been widely reported for chiral molecule assemblies on metal surfaces. However, theoretical understanding of the microscopic mechanism and manifestation of CISS in specific device structures remain controversial. Here, we report direct evidence of CISS in two-terminal devices of heterojunctions of (Ga,Mn)As/AHPA-L molecules/Au. The (Ga,Mn)As layer acts as a spin analyzer for electrons injected from the Au electrode through the AHPA-L monolayer. The CISS of AHPA-L and spin injection into the (Ga,Mn)As are manifested as sharp changes in the junction conductance at the coercive fields of the (Ga,Mn)As. The observations provide a definitive signature of CISS-induced spin valve effect in a two-terminal device. Theoretical implications of the effect and its bias dependence will be discussed.

CAD Simulation of ion channels
Computer simulations of realistic ion channel structures have always been challenging and
a subject of rigorous study. Simulations based on continuum electrostatics have proven to
be computationally cheap and reasonably accurate in predicting a channel’s behavior. In
this paper we discuss the use of a device simulator, SILVACO, to build a solid-state model for
KcsA channel and study its steady-state response. SILVACO is a well-established program,
typically used by electrical engineers to simulate the process flow and electrical characteristics
of solid-state devices. By employing this simulation program, we have presented an
alternative computing platform for performing ion channel simulations, besides the known
methods of writing codes in programming languages. With the ease of varying the different
parameters in the channel’s vestibule and the ability of incorporating surface charges,
we have shown the wide-ranging possibilities of using a device simulator for ion channel
simulations. Our simulated results closely agree with the experimental data, validating our
model.

A numerical model studied the effects of uniform transverse magnetic field for two fluids (pure water and water with electric conductivity), two different non-magnetizable duct and two flow velocities (steady flow for laminar and incompressible) was examined and The results showed an increase in the magnetic field caused a decrease in the local flow and effected on velocity profile. The result also showed that the water with electrical conductivity more affected than pure water.

The action potential signal of nerve and muscle is produced by voltage sensitive channels that include a specialized device to sense voltage. Gating currents of the voltage sensor are now known to depend on the back-and-forth movements of positively charged arginines through the hydrophobic plug of a voltage sensor domain. Transient movements of these permanently charged arginines, caused by the change of transmembrane potential, further drag the S4 segment and induce opening/closing of ion conduction pore by moving the S4-S5 linker. The ion conduction pore is a separate device from the voltage sensor, linked (in an unknown way) by the mechanical motion and electric field changes of the S4-S5 linker. This moving permanent charge induces capacitive current flow everywhere. Everything interacts with everything else in the voltage sensor so everything must interact with everything else in its mathematical model, as everything does in the whole protein. A PNP-steric model of arginines and a mechanical model for the S4 segment are combined using energy variational methods in which all movements of charge and mass satisfy conservation laws of current and mass. The resulting 1D continuum model is used to compute gating currents under a wide range of conditions, corresponding to experimental situations. Chemical-reaction-type models based on ordinary differential equations cannot capture such interactions with one set of parameters. Indeed, they may inadvertently violate conservation of current. Conservation of current is particularly important since small violations (<0.01%) quickly (<< 10-6 seconds) produce forces that destroy molecules. Our model reproduces signature properties of gating current: (1) equality of on and off charge in gating current (2) saturating voltage dependence in QV curve and (3) many (but not all) details of the shape of gating current as a function of voltage.

- 2. Abstract A comparison was undertaken of a model Sq current system developed using the Biot-Savart law and one derived from a set of real magnetic data. A literature review is conducted on the history of the research on magnetic field variations. A description of the general magnetic environment is given along with an explanation of the science behind the ionosphere, current systems and the link between these and magnetic field variations. Data from 13 northern hemisphere magnetometer stations were used to identify the latitudinal dependence of the diurnal variations in the magnetic field caused by the Sq current system. An estimate of the equivalent current system averaged for the j-month data is given, as well as a quantitative estimate of the position of the focus of the current whorl. A discussion is had of the possible reasons for discrepancies between the model the data. The most significant of these is that the model uses simple mathematics and does not account for external influences on the current system, which are discussed.
