What   Type   of character is she? She is a dynamic, flat character.  She is neither the protagonist nor the antagonist.  She is a dynamic character because of her divorce, which caused her to change from passive to strong and determined when her husband tries to take away things that she wants to keep.  She also changed from expecting to unexpecting after her brother, Bing, dies when he drowns, and after her marriage fails. She thinks that none of her expectations of situations are met, and that maybe she should just stop expecting things, so she wouldn’t be hurt anymore.
Her mother is An-Mei Hsu She is American born Chinese She grew up in San Francisco Chinatown Went to UC Berkeley; enrolled as liberal arts major and changed to fine arts She works as a free-lance production assistant for graphic artists Has two sisters and four brothers Her younger brother Bing Hsu died when she was fourteen Married to Ted Jordan What is her  BACKGROUND  like?
What  P e r s o n a l i t y  traits does she have? She has little self confidence and does what people ask her to do.  She can’t decide because she is afraid of picking the wrong answer. “I never believed there was ever any one right answer, yet there were many wrong ones” (126). She gets more self confidence in the end when she sees that she has to speak up for herself
What does she  care  for? What  motivates  her? Things/people that motivate her would be her mother An-Mei Hsu because: She tells her to stand up for herself, and by doing this   she finally gets the courage to stand up to him (Ted), and tell him that she’s keeping the house. The thing that motivates into keeping the house, is the way things have been going on between her and her husband. She does not want him to keep the house because she wants to have a say in it as well.
What  conflicts  does she have? External She has an external conflict with Ted, because Internal She thinks she let Bing die, because she was supposed to be watching him when he fell into the water.  She thinks she let her marriage slip away, that is her fault she’s getting divorced.
