Moving to an Assisted Living?
What Should We
Bring?
Claire LeSage, owner of WITTZ END,
has experienced firsthand the stress
and upheaval families go through when
moving. WITTZ END helps families to
eliminate the stress and chaos they feel
when faced with a life-changing transi-
tion. By identifying, naming and ad-
dressing the stress and emotion feel-
ings, Claire, helps the entire family to
make informed, logical, and educated
decisions based on facts not from
stress or fear.

Moving or preparing to move is and
upsetting time for everyone, so it is
always helpful to have some guidance
in this area.
Let’s Get Started!
 Begin sorting through items with
the primary thought of downsizing
to live in smaller home. Keep in
mind that the space available will
be significantly less than you cur-
rently have.
 TIP: Depending on the
size of the home, it could
take several months or
at least several weeks.
Begin sorting when you
first start thinking of
making the move!
 Rooms are small, closet and stor-
age space limited, so it is im-
portant downsize. If certain items
are im-
portant,
will make
the transi-
tion to the
new home
less
stressful,
then bring it along; it can always
be removed later.
 TIP: Think outside the
box, bring only a few
things to start and a
member of the family
store the rest.
What Should We Move?
 Recycle or repurpose items that
will not fit. Unusable items can be
donated or given to a family mem-
ber.
 TIP: It is better to do this
prior to a move. No one
can be offended, no ar-
guments, and everyone
is happy and safe.
 Measure the furniture, create a
floor plan, place models of furniture
on to floor plan to determine what
will fit.
 TIP: A few new pieces of
furniture may be in or-
der. Your current furni-
ture may not fit and may
be more comfortable and
safer.
 Kitchen space is limited. Only
bring bare essentials. Most often
meals are included and the only
cooking will be making tea or cof-
fee, if that.
 TIP: Eliminate small
appliances, counter
space is limited.
Whatever is not needed
can always be removed
if it becomes a safety
problem.
 Time for a new, smaller bed?
Small rooms may not fit a queen
or full size beds.
 TIP: Ask move in coordi-
nator what size bed will
fit. The headboard/
frame may be too large
for the room or make
the bed too high.
 New bed, new linens! Linen clos-
ets are not always in some units,
or they are small.
 TIP: Look for stackable
soft bin type drawers for
linen storage.
 Closet and storage space is lim-
ited. Keep only this
seasons clothes in Unit.
TIP: Store off-site other
items; or under bed storage
bags and bins
