This study examined the antimicrobial activity of novel ferrocenyl chalcone derivatives with increasing alkyl chain lengths against non-resistant bacteria. The chalcones completely dissolved in DMSO but degraded when exposed to plastic. Disc diffusion testing showed no inhibition zones. Broth microdilution determined the minimum inhibitory concentration, with higher alkyl chain lengths having greater inhibition of S. aureus growth at lower concentrations. Further investigations will analyze morphological changes to bacteria and cell viability when exposed to the chalcones using scanning electron microscopy and MTT assays. Molecular characterization of the compounds will also be conducted.

Delay tolerant networks (DTNs) allow communication in networks with intermittent connectivity by using a store-carry-forward approach. DTNs employ a set of protocols that store messages during network disconnections and forward them when connectivity is available. They can provide communication even when end-to-end paths do not exist. Key properties of DTNs include high latency, low data rates, disconnection, long queuing delays, short contact ranges, and dynamic topologies. Potential applications of DTNs include telemedicine in remote areas, social networking, communication under censorship, file sharing, and sharing cellular minutes.
