‘Film Research - Pick a short film that is similar to your idea, annotate the shots explaining why they are
appealing and what you can take from them as inspiration.’
FILM RESEARCH
The short film which I believe is relatable to my idea is ‘Signs’. The film is directed by Patrick Hughes and is written
by Patrick Hughes and Karl Fleet.
Storyline: Signs is a 12 minute silent film. A lonely male is sitting in an office when he looks out of a window and
sees a beautiful girl sitting in the building next to him. The male and female character look at each other and they
start communicating through a piece of paper and writing on it. Days go past and the amle and female character
keep communicating in this way. The male character realizes that he wants to meet the female character but does
not have the confidence to ask. He goes into work the next day ready to ask the female character when she isn’t
there, A few days go past and he thinks that she has left however she appears at a different window… she got
promoted!
FILM RESEARCH
This film is a very cliché happy romance film. I am aiming to make
my romance film cliché too. I also believe that the fact that the
male and female character communicate in a different way than
dialogue is inspiring because it makes the short film have more
depth to it. The male and character manage to fall in love
through little conversation therefore this short film has the
romance convention of ‘love at first sight’ within it.
FILM RESEARCH
I like the fact that the male character in the short film ‘Signs’ goes home from work
and thinks about the female character. It is obvious to the audience that he is
almost fascinated by her. I want to show this in my short film too. I want the male
and female characters to have clear, strong feelings for each other. They are
constantly thinking about each other. I also believe that this is a strong convention
within the genre.
FILM RESEARCH
I also like the fact that the male character rushes into work
everyday to communicate with the female character. It shows
the way that he feels about her and I also want to make this
very clear in my short film to ensure that I have a cliché
romance film.
FILM RESEARCH
I also believe that the humour side to this romance short film
is inspiring. The humour to this short film keeps it exciting
(without dialogue). I also believe that including some humour
into a romance film is a good thing to have to ensure to keep
it light hearted.
FILM RESEARCH
Due to the fact that this romance film does not have any dialogue
within it music is very important. My short film will have dialogue
within it therefore although music IS important it is not AS
important as it is in this short film. I think the music is inspiring
because is makes the audience connect with the characters
feelings. I want to have a piece of music throughout my short film
to ensure that the audience understand what emotions the
characters are feeling.
