WHO WE ARE
The Federal Institute of Industrial Research, Oshodi (FIIRO) started as an Institute of
AppliedTechnicalResearch(IATR)in1956,asaresultofaneconomicmissionsentto
Nigeria by theWorld Bank, which observed that industrial research activities in the
country were highly diffused, uncoordinated and without direction.The establish-
ment started as a small laboratory in Victoria Island but has metamorphosed into
what now stands today as Federal Institute of Industrial Research, Oshodi (FIIRO),
occupying a land area of five hectares.The premises now has buildings housing its
researchlaboratories,engineering,administration,foodpilotplants,staffclinic,staff
canteenandotherfacilities.
FIIRO Mandate
ThebroadmandateofFIIROistoassistinacceleratingtheindustrialisationofNigeria
through finding utilisation for the country’s raw materials, and upgrading of indig-
enousproductiontechniques.
ThecurrentmandatesoftheInstituteare:
FIIRO has a governing board which oversees general policy implementation. Members are
appointed by the President.The day-to-day management of the Institute is carried out by the
DirectorGeneral/CEO,assistedbythemanagementcommittee.

of the public, without commercial interest from the sponsoring organisations. Such results are,

Contract Research: These are initiated by private companies and entrepreneurs and are
conducted based on agreed term and conditions. Fees charged cover the use of equipment,
