This document defines and provides examples of four types of figurative language: similes, metaphors, personification, and alliteration. Similes use like or as to compare two unlike things, metaphors make comparisons without using like or as, personification gives human traits to non-living objects or ideas, and alliteration repeats initial sounds in words for effect. Examples of each technique are given.

 Similes use words “like” or “as” to

 Similes are a figure of speech that
compares two things that are not similar

3. Examples of Similes
Some similes with “as”
 She is as sweet as a cupcake.
 He run as fast as a cheetah.
 He plays baseball as good as Babe Ruth.
Some similes with “like”
 Her eyes were glowing like a big beam of light.
 The paint was blue like the ocean.
 The flower smelled like fresh perfume.

4.  A metaphor is a
word or phrase that
is used to make a
comparison
between two things.
 It mostly uses words:
like is, are, was, and
were.
Examples:
She is a shining star.
Her eyes were fireflies.
She arrived with an army of
children.
Time is a thief.
Her soft voice was music to his
heart.

5. Personification
 Personification is
when you take
something that is
not alive and can’t
move and you add
human qualities in
a sentence,
making it sound like
that thing is alive.
Example
The star was
dancing in the
sky.

6. Alliteration
 Alliteration is when
a sentence has the
same beginning
sound in each
word.
Examples
Peter Piper
Picked a Peck
of Pickled
Peppers.
Sally Sells
Seashells by the
Seasore.
