Soccer has a long global history and various early forms date back centuries in countries like China, Japan, and among the Greeks and Romans. The modern game originated in England in the 1800s and spread throughout Europe and South America. In 1904, FIFA was formed to govern international soccer competitions, most notably the FIFA World Cup. The first World Cup was held in 1930 in Uruguay and it has grown tremendously in popularity and prestige, with over 1 billion viewers for some finals. Brazil has won the most World Cup titles with five victories.
