Getting Ready to Dye
• Dye powders should, for convenience, be mixed
into a 1% stock solution; e.g. 5gm of powder in a
small vessel stirred into a smooth paste with a little
cold water and made up to ½ litre with water (less
than 50°C) from the tap. Store in a glass or plastic
container.
• Check whether the fabric is ‘Prepared for
Dyeing’ (PFD) or requires scouring to remove
grease, oil or starch. Run a few droplets of cold
water onto the fabric. If they soak in quickly, no
scour is necessary. To remove starches, size and
oils, add 5mls of Synthrapol (a non-ionic detergent)
along with 2-3 litres of water for each 100gms of
material. Stir gently over a 15 minute period, and
then rinse thoroughly in warm water. It is possible
to use household detergent, but the alkaline residue
may affect the final colour or wash fastness.
• The dye vessel does not have to be heat proof;
glass, enamel or even polythene bags can be used,
but if you use metal it must be stainless or enamel.
Chips out of enamel should be repaired.
• The amount of dye required is calculated
according to the weight to be dyed; weigh the
dry material before you start. Using 3ml of the 1%
stock dye solution to each gram of fibre gives an
average strength dye, so for 25gm of fibre you
need a total of 75ml dye, for example 50ml blue +
20ml yellow + 5ml black will give bottle green. You
can vary the dye as much as you like; more dye
will produce stronger colours and less gives pastel
shades. Always stir the stock dye solution well
before use since some sedimentation may occur.
If there are particles of undissolved dye it helps to
filter through a pair of tights.
• The basic colours, bright yellow, magenta and
bright blue, can be mixed in any proportion and
strength to produce thousands of different colours.
Universal Indicator Paper
Use to test acidity and alkalinity of water, covering
pH1 to 11. Variations in pH will affect the success
of reproducing colours. It can be altered by adding
a small amount of soda ash to make the water more
alkaline or adding vinegar to make it more acidic.
The pH is especially important when dyeing with
safflower and other natural dyes

Natural Dyes
Natural dyes offer a valuable alternative to synthetic
dyes. They give subtle and varied results depending
on the method used to extract the colour.
A mordant, such as Alum, is required for the colour
to remain washfast. Material can be prepared with
the mordant for later use or the mordant can be
added to the dye bath as the dye is being ‘cooked’.
The pre-soaked dyestuff (placed in a muslin bag to
avoid it getting mixed with the material) is boiled
together with the mordanted fibre, fabric or yarn.
Colour results will vary depending on the mordant
or method used. We suggest you experiment with
the dyes and keep notes on how you arrived at the
finished result. We offer a large range of dyeing
books to help you get started as well as a wide
choice mordants for experimentation.
These natural dyes are sold in units of 100gm unless
otherwise stated and the colours quoted are an
indication of the colours obtainable depending on
the method used. The weights of dyes supplied are
subject to up to 10% weight gain or loss due to mois-ture

Indigo Dyeing
Indigo Dye Powder
The indigo molecule does not dissolve in water and
does not produce its blue colour until it is oxidised.
The powder uses an alkali bath with the combined
oxygen removed. This is done by adding spec-tralite
(thiourea dioxide) to the indigo vat during its
preparation. Indigo is only soluble in an alkaline
solution made by dissolving sodium carbonate
(soda ash) or caustic soda in water. The solution
will be a yellow-green in colour and gives blue
when exposed to air

Potato Dextrin Resist
This resist is derived from potato starch and is often
used to resist out large areas which will shrink and
crack as it dries, creating lace like patterns and
crackle lines - similar to batik effects. The dextrin
is not suitable for immersion dye baths as it is
water soluble. Fabrics should be first scoured and
then soaked in soda ash and dried prior to direct
application with Procion MX fibre reactive dyes.
Alternatively, the resist can be used on pre-dyed
fabric and a discharge paste can be applied. The
dextrin is easy to wash out, making it an environ-mentally
friendly alternative to wax.

Silkpaint Water-soluble Resist
This versatile, water soluble resist can be used in
a number of ways. It can be diluted with water
or dyes and used as an outliner in silk painting
or it can be used as a thickener for printing and
painting with dyes. It can be used to inhibit the
flow of paint on treated fabrics by diluting 1 part
resist and 3 parts water or it can be stencilled
or screen printed to create batik effects. Steam,
heat set or fix dyes according to manufacturers
instructions, machine wash on delicate cycle and
iron while damp. Any residual resist can be rinsed

Wax-Out!
Water based formulation completely removes
waxes and oils, including pure bees wax, from
fabrics without removing the dye. Dilute in hand
hot water and soak dyed fabric at 60˚C (making
it ideal for silk painters!) for 20 minutes to emulsify
and disperse the wax, agitating occasionally.
Rinse thoroughly in warm soapy water to remove
any remaining wax emulsion. The prepared solu-tion
can be reused many times until the remaining
emulsion requires just too much effort to remove.

Synthrapol
A mild non-ionic low temperature concentrated
detergent used to prevent back staining by
removing dye which has not combined with the
fabric. Use half a teaspoon to 5 litres water
for washing out dyestuff. This product does not
contain sodium carbonate, often found in domestic
detergents and contributes to colours fading during
washing. Synthrapol can be used to prepare
fabric for dyeing by removing starches and grease.
It is also effective in removing batik wax when
boiling out, adjust quantities as required depending
on the volume of wax used.

Batik & Resist Dyeing
This technique of fabric decoration is believed to
have originated in the Indonesian island of Java.
Melted wax is applied in a design using a tjanting,
stamp or brush. The penetrated wax repels the dye
when the fabric is dipped in the dye solution. When
the wax is removed, the design appears in the
original colour of the cloth.
Natural beeswax, microcrystalline wax and paraffin
wax can all be used in varying combinations to
create differing effects and handling during the
design process will add further cracking. Sampling
and record keeping will help to reproduce the
masked-out characteristic veins that define batik.
The limitations of using wax are that cold water dyes
must be used to prevent the wax from melting and
that the wax needs to be removed using a specialist
preparation such as Wax-Out! or by dry cleaning.
Alternative resists such as Soy Wax and Potato
Dextrin will produce further variations on the theme.
Shibori
This ancient Japanese technique of fabric folding or
stitching and then dyeing, has been brought right
up to date. Traditionally indigo was used to create
patterning. However, using modern dyes, discharge
agents and fabrics you can easily develop
complex patterns. Tying and clamping, dyeing and
discharging, re-dyeing and heat setting the fabric
creates a new and visually satisfying richness of
colour and shape.
Tie dyeing (or Kumo Shibori) is a fun and simple
technique which can be used by children to deco-rate
and pattern t-shirts, bedding, table linen, scarves
and more.

Fixitol P
Otherwise known as ‘Retayne’, Fixitol P can be
used to improve wash fastness and boost colour-fastness,
particularly in deep shades and is suitable
for use with most dyes including Deka L, Procion
MX and Acid. Add Fixitol P (1 part to 4 parts
water) to the final rinse at 40°C after dyeing,
printing or painting fabric. Allow to soak for 30
minutes. The process will need to be repeated
intermittently for items needing frequent washing.
Fixitol will help to prevent colours from fading when
washing on a gentle washing machine cycle at
30°C. Wash items separately for first few washes.

Synthetic Dyes
The dyes on the following pages have been
formulated to offer the dyer consistent colour results
and good wash-fastness for silk, wool, cotton,
viscose and synthetics.
Colour results will vary depending on the dye used,
the method of application and the materials to
which they have been applied, as well as the type
of water and dyeing conditions. We recommend
that colours are sampled before starting large
projects and a scrapbook can be useful for docu-menting
results.
Direct dyes have been formulated to dye all natural
fabrics including cotton, silk and wool but not
synthetics. The Deka L direct dyes come in 10gm
sachets and will dye up to 250gm of fibre.
Procion MX fibre reactive dyes are also best used
for cellulose fibres including cotton, tencel, linen
and viscose. They are ideal for batik work as they
are reactive at a relatively low temperature.
Acid dyes give the best results on silk and wool and
are fixed using hot water and vinegar. They can be
used effectively from a stock solution for painting
on silk and set with steam. The dyes penetrate
the fibres of the silk and retain the suppleness and
reflective qualities of the fabric.
Disperse dyes have been developed specifically
for use on synthetics such as polyester and nylon,
fabrics that need high water temperatures for dyeing.
Using Dyes Safely
Powder and liquid dyes and dye assistants are
widely used without a problem, providing simple
precautions are taken:
• Treat all dyes, mordants and chemicals as
potentially poisonous. Keep them separate from
food, cooking utensils and food preparation
surfaces. Cover working surfaces with news-paper/
polythene.
• Avoid inhaling powders (or aerosol mist if
spraying solutions), splashing solutions into eyes,
swallowing materials or prolonged contact with
skin. Use in a well ventilated room.
• Wear rubber gloves and wash well after
handling materials.
• Store in clearly labelled containers well away
from children and pets.
• Residues of dyes, mordants and chemicals
have little effect on the environment when used in
domestic quantities and disposed of responsibly.

Fibre Reactive Dyes
Fibre Reactive (Procion MX) Dyes
Fibre Reactive dyes will colour cellulose fabrics
including cotton and linen as well as viscose and
silk. With careful mixing and degrees of concentra-tion
and dilution, these excellent value dyes extend
the range of tones and tints available to cover the
complete spectrum of hues.
They are particularly good for Batik work on cotton
as they are reactive at a relatively low temperature.
These dyes can be kept almost indefinitely as
powders in an airtight container. However, under
adverse conditions, such as heat and damp, they
can lose some reactivity and wash fastness. As a
solution, the dyes can be kept in the fridge for up
to 14 days. Typically the quantities of dye range
from 0.5gm to 100gm of dry material for pale
shades and 4.0gm per 100gm for deep shades.

JUST GETTING STARTED?
Don’t miss the
Procion MX Fibre Reactive
Dye Kit on page 65
Using Fibre
Reactive Dyes
Fibre reactive dyes produce bright clear colours
with good wash fastness and light fastness on
cotton and other cellulose fibres such as rayon,
bamboo, flax, tencel, paper pulp and Tissutex
paper, as well as silk. As they are cold water dyes,
they are particularly useful for resist techniques such
as Batik and when combined with urea and a thick-ener,
can be used in screen printing.
The dye powders have a long shelf life when stored
under dry, cool, airtight conditions but quickly loose
intensity once in solution. It is therefore best to make
up small quantities of stock solution as required and
use within 10 days or store for up to 3 months in
a freezer. Old dye solutions can still be used on
wool by adding white vinegar to the dye, but the
colours will sometimes surprise you!
Dye Bath Technique
First see ‘Getting Ready to Dye’ on page 64
• Weigh the dry fibre, yarn or cloth.
• Wash and soak the fibre thoroughly, rinse well
and squeeze out excess water
• Measure the water into the vessel. The quantity
of water is important with these dyes. Use 30ml
water to each gm of fibre. 25gm of fibre needs ¾
litre of water (or 1oz requires 1½ pints of water).
• Add the stock solution and stir.
• Add the clean wetted material and stir.
• Leave to stand for 15 minutes, stir occasionally.
• Add 50gm of soda ash for every litre of water
(dissolved in a very small quantity of hot water
first). Leave for 1 hour stirring occasionally
• Wash and rinse well.
Colour Charts
We have created colour charts for all our colour
products and although we have endeavoured to
present them as accurately as possible, they are
only as accurate as the printing process will allow.

Fibrecrafts Disperse Dyes
These dyes can be used with various techniques
and will readily colour synthetics such as polyester,
nylon, cellulose acetate, vilene, viscose, synthetic
velvets and PVC. They can also be used to colour
plastic buttons and fastenings. Their effect is less
potent on polyester, due to the molecular structure,
allowing only pastel through to medium shades,
however full colour can be achieved when transfer
printing with the dyes.
Polyester fibre contains pores or canals within its
structure which, when heated to 100°C, expand
to allow particles of the dyes to enter. The expan-sion
of the pores is limited by the heat of the water
- industrial dyeing of polyester is carried out at
130°C in pressurised equipment!
Using the dyes on natural fibres, such as cotton
and wool, are not effective but they can be
combined with reactive dyes to dye blends of poly-ester/
cotton. This technique is used industrially in
controlled conditions.
The dyes are also used in heat transfer paints
(page 87). To make your own, the recipe can be
found in the Resource File on our web site.

Dischargeable Dyes
Discharge Acid Dyes
Please read inset above.
The quantity of dye powder used depends on the
depth of colour you want. It is measured in rela-tion
to weight of fibre or yarn to be dyed. Using
the 1% stock solution, a 2:1 ratio (50cc of 1% dye
solution for 25g fibre) will give an average depth
of colour. This is just a starting point to experi-ment
from. Deep colours will need much more,
while you can get lovely pale colours with far less.
White (distilled) vinegar required.

Illuminating Dyes
Illuminating Acid Dyes
These dyes work effectively when combined with
discharge paste as they have a high resistance to
bleaching agents. A concentrated stock solution
of dye (made using boiling water and vinegar) is
combined with discharge paste. The paste is then
laid on the fabric and allowed to dry, it is then
activated by pressing the fabric with a hot iron on
a steam setting. It is necessary to then steam fix
the acid dye using the traditional technique. The
surplus dye and chemicals rinse readily from the
fabric once the dye has been set.
quantity price stock code
50gm £8.50 LA/ colour
Dischargeable acid dyes and illuminating acid
dyes increase the range of patterning and effects
available to the textile artist. The dyes work like
this; the dischargeable acid dyes have a low resist-ance
to bleaching and are easily removed from
fabric while the illuminating dyes have a high resist-ance
to bleaching. This image shows discharge
printing on black velvet (please see page 98 for
our range of dischargeable black fabrics).
Fabrics can be painted or dyed with the discharge-able
dyes which can then be readily removed with
discharge paste. This alone offers a variation on
the resist technique.
Combining the discharge paste with an illuminating
acid dye has the effect of replacing the ‘bleached’
out area with the colour from the illuminating dye.
After steaming and drying, the fabric is
washed in cold and then hand hot
water to remove all surplus
dye and chemicals.
Dyes can be used for any number of printing tech-niques.
Adding a thickener, such as Manutex or
Indalca PA3R will increase the consistency enough
to use the dyes in silk screen printing or block
printing. You can find out more about these tech-niques
from the Resource File at:

Dye Bath Technique
The quantity of water is not critical except that for
even results there must be plenty of room for circula-tion.
A typical volume (liquor ratio) is 30 times as
much water as fibre i.e. 750ml water for 25gm
fibre (1.5 pints for 1oz).
• Measure warm water into the dye bath and
add required amount of Glaubers salts.
• Add 25ml white vinegar for each 25gm fibre
and stir well. Use only half the quantity of vinegar
when dyeing synthetics.
• Submerge dampened materials in the bath and
soak for 10 minutes. Remove and then add the
dye solution. Stir well. Return the materials and
gently move around the bath for 10 minutes.
• Heat the bath to hand hot. Remove from heat
and allow to stand for 10 minutes. Stir well and
return to heat. Silk should be kept below 85°C,
wool can be taken to boiling, but stir as little as
possible to prevent felting.
• Maintain at a simmer just on boiling for 20
minutes. It is essential to boil wool to improved
wash fastness.
• Allow to cool without stirring, remove
the dyed material and rinse well.
Quick Microwave Method
This is a quick technique for creating randomly
dyed yarns, fibres and fabrics using Acid dyes.
• Mix 2 teaspoons of white (distilled) vinegar to 1
litre of water and soak the material thoroughly.
• Line a microwave dish with sufficient cling film
to be able to close over the top.
• Squeeze out and spread the material randomly
across the dish.
• Lightly sprinkle the dye powder onto the surface
of the material. A number of colours can be used
to create a varied result. The more you add, the
denser the result of the colour.
• Dampen with a small amount of hot water and
work the Acid dye powder into the fibres.
• Fold the cling film over the dish and ensure it is
air tight. Place in the microwave.
• Heat on high until the parcel ‘inflates’ and then
reduce the heat to ‘defrost’.
• Cook until the parcel begins to billow up again,
turn off and leave to cool.
• Rinse several times and put out to dry!

Painting on Silk
The smooth texture of finely woven silk fabric
provides an ideal canvas for painting. The colours
from silk paints and acid dyes are vibrant and
reflective and the finished paintings can be used for
furnishings, wall hangings or clothing.
Steam-fix silk dyes such as Dupont Silk Colours or
Jacquard Silk Colours, penetrate the fibres and
fully combine with the fabric. They produce bright,
intense colours and give the best results for painted
silk. These pre-mixed liquid colours are a solution of
acid and other dyes and offer consistent, repeatable
shades. The most cost effective however, and with
more opportunities to develop your own palette, is
to mix your own. Both the Fibrecrafts Acid dyes and
Jacquard Acid dyes can be used for this method:
• Make an 8% stock solution by adding 250ml of
very hot water to 20gm of Acid dye powder. Stir
until dissolved, bearing in mind that some colours
are more readily dissolved than others.
• The final concentration of dye solution for
painting should be between 2-8% of the weight
of dye to the weight of water. The final colour
strength is linked to the concentration of dyestuff,
giving a range from pastel to strong colour. You
can dilute the 8% stock solution in roughly 1% steps
by adding 11ml of water to 100ml of stock. Test at
intervals, bearing in mind that the full colour of the
dye will not be apparent until it has been steam set
Silk paints are pigments combined with an acrylic
medium. The colour binds to the surface of the fabric
when the paint is heat set with an iron. The finish
is slightly duller than with dye and the handle may
be a little stiffer depending on the concentration of
paint. They offer a no-mess alternative to dyes.

• Suspend your fabric securely using pins or claws
across a stretcher frame. Pull the fabric tightly to
ensure a taut surface. Place the first pin in the
centre of the farthest edge and then in each corner.
Pull the fabric across the frame and place pins on
the opposite side. Repeat this on the remaining
sides. Paints will run and collect in areas of the
fabric that are not flat.
• The silk paint is very fluid and is quickly
absorbed by the fabric. You can help control
the flow of the paint by treating the fabric with a
primer such as Jacquard No Flow or Deka Silk Anti-spread,
this particularly useful for free-style painting.
• Use a gutta outliner to contain colours in a speci-fied
area. Ensure the outliner has fully penetrated
the fabric and that the outline is complete, gaps will
allow the paint to escape. When the gutta is dry,
apply the paint to the centre of the defined area
and allow the paint to creep to the gutta bounda-ries.
Add more paint, a different colour or water
to create a variation in colour such as shown in the
petals of this flower painted by Linda Chapman.
• For brighter, more opaque colours, allow the silk
paint to dry and then apply a ‘second coat’.
• Different effects can be achieved while the
paint is still wet. Try dripping water droplets or a
different colour of paint onto the surface to create
patterning or sprinkle with effect salt. The crystals
will soak up the paint dragging the colours towards
it. Leave the salt in place until the paint has dried.

26. Easy Block Printing
Making the Block
These Speedy-Stamp rubber blocks provide fast,
easy carving. They are a flexible and durable
alternative to lino and do not crack, crumble or
break. Their ability to bend around shapes, such
as glasses or plant pots, gives them a more diverse
use than traditional lino printing.
Clip art images from a computer or freehand
pencil drawings can be used as a template and
transferred onto the block. Freshly printed images
transfer easily provided the ink is still wet. To
transfer it, place the image face down on the
block and rub the back of it with a spoon handle.
Prints from a Speedy-Stamp carving block can be
created from a series of cuts from the block. This is
the traditional technique used for block printing.
• To cut the block, use the
Linozips Safety Cutter.
• Transfer the image onto the
block and begin carving a
trough around the outline of
the image with the Linozips
Safety Cutter. The carved
away areas will not print; the
raised remaining portion is what will become the
image.
• Remove the remainder of the
raised area.
• You will be left with a stamp
that has a raised design. Now
make your first print.
• When the print has been
achieved, carefully remove the
block. The blocks are fairly
pliable and can be peeled away with ease.
• Make further prints as desired. Remember that
the print can be created in a number of stages so
it is important to print everything you want during
this stage. Alternatively, it is possible to make
duplicate stamps with the next stage cut away so
that the stamps can be used again.
• Cut out the next stage of your
design into the original block by
removing more of the rubber
and repeat the steps above,
using a darker
colour, until the
final print has
been achieved.
Block Printing Inks
Deka Block Printing Inks
Oil based block printing inks are suitable for use
on fabric and paper. These inks are washable,
lightfast and suitable for use on light to medium
coloured fabrics. Evenly cover a brayer with ink
from a tray and then apply to a prepared block.
Place the block firmly and evenly on the fabric to
achieve a clean image and press down to transfer
the ink onto the fabric. Put a weight, such as a
book, on the block to help ink to transfer.
Leave for several days for the fabric to dry before
doing anything with it and then iron on reverse to
set the ink. Put tissue or brown paper underneath
to protect the ironing board.
It is necessary to allow 4-6 weeks to elapse before
washing the fabric for the first time, ensuring the
ink has fully cured. Wash with a mild detergent
and handle gently. Dry cleaning is not recom-mended.
